White Sox's Ky Bush: Recalled, shelved with tricep injury

The White Sox recalled Bush from Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday and placed him on the 15-day injured list with a left tricep strain, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.
Chicago optioned Bush to Triple-A on Aug. 26, and despite making a one-inning start for Charlotte on Sept. 7, he'll revert to the big club's 15-day IL after suffering the injury in that outing. Given the timing of the injury, Bush is unlikely to be activated before the season ends Sept. 29. Bush made four starts for the White Sox prior to his demotion in late August, logging a 5.60 ERA and 2.04 WHIP while walking more batters (16) than he struck out (11) over 17.2 innings.

Bush managed one nice start against the Astros, but his other three outings during his first stint in the big leagues were woeful, as the lefty ultimately collected a 5.60 ERA and 11:16 K:BB over 17.2 frames across the four starts. The left-hander will work on ironing out his issues at Charlotte and the White Sox will now need a starter for three week's series against the Rangers to take Bush's spot.

Bush worked around trouble through five scoreless frames before coughing up a solo shot to Yainer Diaz in the sixth inning. The Chicago rookie miraculously escaped with only two runs on his register after allowing 13 batters to reach base. Bush's track record of wildness during the minors this season - issuing 42 free passes in 99.2 innings across two stops -- has followed him to the majors, as he's now walked 12 against five strikeouts in his first 8.2 big-league innings. He'll make a second straight turn through the rotation after he was dealt a loss in his big-league debut against Oakland this past Monday, when he lasted four innings and struck out three while allowing three earned runs on two hits and five walks. The 6-foot-6 lefty had been plagued by control problems at his previous stops at Double-A Birmingham (14.5 percent walk rate) and Triple-A Charlotte (7.1 percent walk rate) prior to getting called up, so he'll likely need to display some improvement in that regard before he can be streamed or rostered with any confidence.

Bush was promoted to Triple-A Charlotte on Monday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Bush will move up a level in the White Sox minor-league system after he produced a 2.12 ERA and 1.03 WHIP with 78 strikeouts over 80.2 innings in 14 starts with Double-A Birmingham this season. With Chicago completely out of the postseason picture and expected to be sellers at the trade deadline, it's possible that Bush could find his way to the major-league roster down the road if he impresses at the Triple-A level.
The White Sox acquired Bush along with catcher Edgar Quero from the Angels on Wednesday in exchange for right-handers Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Bush missed the first few months of the season at Double-A Rocket City with an oblique strain and has put up a 5.88 ERA and 1.42 WHIP through 26 innings across six starts since returning. Though his stats don't jump off the page on first glance, he's allowed just three runs over his last three starts (14.2 IP) and has demonstrated an ability to strike batters out at a solid rate. If he continues at his current rate, there's a chance the 23-year-old southpaw makes his MLB debut before the end of next season.

Bush (oblique) made a rehab appearance Thursday for the Angels' rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate, recording just one out while allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits and one walk.
Bush's 2023 debut was an inauspicious one, as he retired just one of the eight batters he faced. The Angels will hope that Bush's rough showing was a byproduct of rust rather than any lingering discomfort from the left oblique injury that has kept him on the shelf all season. Once he ramps up over the course of multiple rehab outings in the lower minors, Bush is expected to settle into the rotation at Double-A Rocket City.
