Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Throws light side session
McDermott (lat) threw a light bullpen session Tuesday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.
McDermott began a throwing progression two weeks ago and continues to be built back up slowly as he comes back from a mild lat/teres strain. He will not be ready in time for Opening Day and is likely to join the rotation at Triple-A Norfolk once he's physically able.

Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Begins throwing progression
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said that McDermott (lat) will begin his throwing progression Monday, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
McDermott is recovering from what's been described as a mild lat/teres strain, but the injury still seems to be significant enough to remove him from the competition for an Opening Day rotation spot. He'll likely be limited to playing catch off flat ground for the next week before advancing to throwing bullpen sessions and eventually facing hitters. McDermott may not have enough time to get fully ramped up to pitch in games before the Orioles' Grapefruit League schedule comes to a close.

Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Not yet cleared for activities
McDermott (lat) said Tuesday that he feels "really good," but he's not sure when he'll be cleared to begin a throwing progression, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
McDermott has been limited to strengthening exercises since being diagnosed with a mild right lat/teres strain earlier this month. The injury has likely eliminated any chance he had to make the Orioles' Opening Day roster, but he could have a shot to be ready to join the rotation at Triple-A Norfolk at the start of the season.

Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Suffers lat strain
Manager Brandon Hyde said Saturday that McDermott has a mild lat/teres strain, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports.
The plan is to shut McDermott down for 10-to-14 days before he restarts his throwing program. The 26-year-old right-hander entered spring training with an outside chance to make the Opening Day roster, but his latest injury makes it even more likely he begins the year at Triple-A Norfolk.

Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Returns from injury at Triple-A
Triple-A Norfolk reinstated McDermott (shoulder) from its 7-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader with Nashville, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports.
McDermott will be getting his first game action since he was shut down in late July with a right scapula stress reaction. The 26-year-old is unlikely to be a factor with the Orioles before the end of the season, but finishing the campaign healthy would give the right-hander and the team some peace of mind heading into the offseason.

Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Goes on Triple-A IL
Triple-A Norfolk placed McDermott on the 7-day injured list Tuesday with a right scapula stress reaction, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.
McDermott's last appearance for Norfolk came back on July 30, and he struck out 10 while yielding just two runs over six innings. However, the right-hander evidently picked up an injury during or after that outing and now appears likely to miss multiple weeks.

Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Heads back to minors
The Orioles optioned McDermott to Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday.
The transaction comes one day after McDermott allowed three runs over four innings in a no-decision against the Marlins in his major-league debut. Baltimore has a doubleheader versus the Blue Jays coming up Monday, so McDermott could be recalled that day to fill one of the openings in the rotation.

Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Goes four frames in MLB debut
McDermott allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three batters over four innings in a no-decision against Miami on Wednesday.
McDermott was called up Wednesday to make his big-league debut after posting a 3.96 ERA and 1.43 WHIP over 91.0 innings in Triple-A. The right-hander got through three scoreless frames against the Marlins but struggled in the fourth, giving up three runs on four hits, including a Josh Bell homer. That proved to be his final frame, as Baltimore brought in a reliever to begin the fifth. Though he didn't pitch particularly well, there's a good chance McDermott will get another turn in the rotation with Baltimore hosting a doubleheader against Toronto in five days.

Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Joins taxi squad, could get call-up
The Orioles added McDermott to their taxi squad Tuesday, signaling that he could soon be formally called up from Triple-A Norfolk, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Baltimore currently has a vacancy in its rotation after sending Cade Povich down to Norfolk prior to the All-Star break, and McDermott would appear to be in line to fill the void Wednesday in Miami for what would be his major-league debut. Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Getting first MLB start Wednesday
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said that McDermott will be called up from Triple-A Norfolk to start Wednesday against the Marlins, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
McDermott's promotion already appeared imminent after he joined the Orioles' taxi squad in Miami on Tuesday, and Hyde confirmed that the 25-year-old righty would fill the opening in the rotation created by Cade Povich's demotion to Triple-A shortly before the All-Star break. Over 20 appearances (19 starts) at Norfolk this season, McDermott posted a 3.96 ERA and 1.43 WHIP while piling up 129 strikeouts over 91 innings. Though McDermott should be able to continue generating swings and misses in the big leagues on the back of his mid-to-upper 90s fastball and a sharp slider, control remains a concern for the young righty, who has walked 13.5 percent of the batters he's faced in the minors this season. A matchup with a weak Miami lineup at least offers McDermott a soft landing spot in his MLB debut.

Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Likely to make MLB debut Wednesday
McDermott is likely to be called up from Triple-A Norfolk make his major-league debut Wednesday in Miami, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.

The Orioles still have an opening for Wednesday, and McDermott is fully expected to fill the void. The 25-year-old right-hander has posted a 3.96 ERA and 129:54 K:BB over 91 innings this season with Norfolk.

Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Better control since May
McDermott has a 3.79 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 79 strikeouts in 54.2 innings over his last 10 starts for Triple-A Norfolk.
McDermott walked 23 batters in 21.1 innings over his first six starts of the season, but he's been much more efficient since the calendar turned to May. There are some question marks behind Corbin Burnes and Grayson Rodriguez in Baltimore's rotation, and if more reinforcements are needed from Triple-A at some point this summer, McDermott may finally get his shot.

Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Looking healthy in spring
McDermott (back) has struck out 10 over 6.2 scoreless innings while allowing five hits and three walks over three appearances in Grapefruit League play.
McDermott finished the 2023 campaign on Triple-A Norfolk's injured list due to a back strain, but he reported to spring training at full health and has turned some heads with his performance thus far. The 25-year-old right-hander is ticketed for a return trip to Norfolk to begin the 2024 season, but he should rank high on the list for a call-up if the Orioles' rotation depth is tested at any point.
