Mariners' Bryce Miller: Pitching through minor lat issue

Miller conceded after Sunday's loss to the Cubs that he's dealt with a minor right lat injury since his July 24 start against the Rangers, Adam Jude of The Seattle Times reports.
Miller had a start pushed back one day when he first began feeling discomfort in his lat. He's taken the ball on turn since then, but the results have not been there, with the hurler logging a 7.92 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 21:15 K:BB over 30.2 frames covering his last six outings. A move to the bullpen for Miller is possible, but the health of Bryan Woo (shoulder) complicates the decision. For now, Miller is tentatively lined up to start Sunday's game in Toronto.

Miller held Milwaukee to a single unearned run through his first four innings before everything unraveled in the fifth. He was charged with five runs in the frame, with Christian Yelich's three-run homer delivering the biggest blow, before Seattle's bullpen allowed the game to turn into a 22-0 rout. It marked Miller's first start this season in which he failed to complete five innings, while the five earned runs matched his season high. The 27-year-old Miller's been slumping of late, going 0-4 with a 5.40 ERA across 26.1 frames in his last five outings. Overall, his ERA sits at 3.08 with a 0.95 WHIP and 79:15 K:BB across 79 innings this season. Miller will look to get back on track in his next start, tentatively scheduled to come on the road next week against the Yankees.

Miller limited the damage to a two-run home run by Brooks Lee in the second inning. The Mariners' bullpen couldn't hold the lead, leaving Miller to see his winless skid reach four games, a span in which he's allowed 16 runs (13 earned) over 21.1 innings. His shaky July has taken a little shine off his overall numbers, but he still has a strong 2.80 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 74:13 K:BB through 74 innings over 13 games (12 starts) this season. Miller is projected for a home start versus the Rays next week.

Things unraveled in the fourth, when he was charged with four runs, though two defensive errors played a major role in the damage. The right-hander issued four walks Thursday, almost matching the total (five) he had allowed over his previous 52.2 innings. Despite the rough outing, Miller has still enjoyed a strong start to the campaign with a 2.18 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 65:9 K:BB through 10 appearances.
