  • Cardinals' Jose Fermin: Swipes bag in loss

Fermin went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base in Sunday's 10-4 loss to the Mariners. Fermin has seen minimal playing time since he was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Aug. 21 to replace Nolan Gorman. Over eight games since that date, Fermin has gone 3-for-15 (.200) with three walks, and his two-run single Sunday was the first time he plated a run in the majors all season. The infielder has a poor .148/.246/.197 slash line with no home runs, two stolen bases, six runs scored, a double and a triple over 69 plate appearances. He has a short-term path to playing time at second base as long as Brendan Donovan (foot) is out.

  • Cardinals' Jose Fermin: Summoned from minors

The Cardinals recalled Fermin from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday. Fermin is taking the roster spot of the struggling Nolan Gorman, who has been optioned to Memphis. The 25-year-old Fermin will offer St. Louis a backup option at second base, third base and shortstop, and he could see some starts versus left-handed pitching.

The Cardinals optioned Fermin to Triple-A Memphis on Monday. Fermin has slashed just .130/.216/.174 over 51 plate appearances with the big club this season. He should get the chance to play regularly as he heads back to Memphis.

  • Cardinals' Jose Fermin: Recalled from Triple-A

The Cardinals recalled Fermin from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Fermin was off to a fantastic start with Memphis, slashing .350/.458/.650 with four home runs, five steals and a 3:11 K:BB over 18 games. The 25-year-old will offer utility infield depth for the Cardinals, and it's possible he gets some starts at second base against lefties.

  • Cardinals' Jose Fermin: Optioned to Triple-A

  • Cardinals' Jose Fermin: Three-hit effort Friday

Fermin went 3-for-3 in Friday's Grapefruit League win over the Mets. Fermin's big game has him hitting .385 (5-for-13) over six spring games. The 24-year-old projects as a utility infielder if he makes the Cardinals' big-league roster out of camp. Fermin had limited success last year, batting .235 with a .594 OPS across 61 plate appearances. With established options at most, if not all, of the infield positions, Fermin's playing time is unlikely to be significant barring injuries to other players.

  • Cardinals' Jose Fermin: Activated off minor-league IL

Fermin (quad) was activated from the injured list Monday at Triple-A Memphis. Fermin missed the first couple months of the 2023 season due to a severe quad strain, but he's all set now to become a regular for Memphis following a 10-game rehab stint between the Florida Complex League and Low-A Palm Beach. St. Louis acquired the 24-year-old infielder from Cleveland over the winter in exchange for cash considerations. He slashed .215/.336/.322 with six homers and nine steals in 90 games last year at Triple-A Columbus.

The 22-year-old infielder has put together a solid .268/.365/.326 slash line with 13 RBI, 21 runs scored and one stolen base across 162 plate appearances. Fermin has appeared to be more of a contact hitter in the lower levels of the minor leagues, and he's shown a good eye at the plate with a 9.2 percent walk rate compared to a 7.4 percent strikeout rate this year.
