  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Pushed off 40-man roster

The Marlins outrighted Campbell (elbow) off the 40-man roster Wednesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Campbell is set to miss most, if not all, of the 2023 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, so the Marlins weren't keen on tendering him a contract for the upcoming campaign. He'll remain in the organization after clearing waivers and should be able to continue his rehab program at the Marlins' spring facility in Jupiter, Fla. Campbell made two minor-league appearances in 2022 before going under the knife earlier this summer.

  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Recovering from Tommy John surgery

Campbell (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery earlier this summer, MLB.com reports. The Marlins never officially revealed the date of Campbell's surgery, though Ely Sussman of FishStripes.com reported July 14 that the right-hander underwent the procedure. Assuming he had the surgery at some point in early July, Campbell could have an outside shot at making it back late in the 2023 season, but he'll need to avoid any setbacks in the rehab process for that to become a reality. Before landing on the Marlins' injured list April 20 with a strained right elbow and ultimately having surgery, Campbell made his lone two appearances of the season at Triple-A Jacksonville.

  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Not yet throwing

Campbell (elbow) has yet to resume a throwing program since he was initially placed on the 10-day injured list April 20, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. The Marlins later moved Campbell to the 60-day IL on May 26 after it became clear he would need more than two months of recovery time from the right elbow strain. Despite having already been shut down for nearly six weeks, Campbell's lack of meaningful throwing activity to date means he's unlikely to be ready to return at any point in June.

  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Shifts to 60-day injured list

Campbell (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Thursday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Campbell was placed on the injured list April 20 due to a right elbow strain. Thursday's transaction was made to open a spot on the 40-man roster and rules Campbell out until at least late June.

  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Placed on 10-day IL

Campbell was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right elbow strain Wednesday retroactive to April 18, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Campbell was recalled by the Marlins on Sunday, but he hasn't yet appeared in a game for the big-league club. However, he's dealing with an elbow injury that will force him to miss at least a week and a half. It's not yet clear when he'll be able to return, but Daniel Castano was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday to take Campbell's place in the bullpen.

  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Joins big club

The Marlins recalled Campbell from Triple-A Jacksonville ahead of Sunday's game against the Phillies, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Miami optioned Daniel Castano to Triple-A to open up a spot on the 28-man active roster and in the bullpen for Campbell. After making the Marlins' Opening Day roster last spring as a Rule 5 selection, Campbell appeared in 16 games for Miami in 2021, logging a 6.41 ERA and 1.58 WHIP across 26.2 innings.

  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Heads to minors

The Marlins optioned Campbell to Triple-A Jacksonville on Monday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Campbell was one of four pitchers on the 40-man roster that the Marlins dispatched to minor-league camp Monday, as Braxton Garrett, Jordan Holloway and Daniel Castano also received the boot. A Rule 5 selection last offseason, Campbell spent the entire 2021 campaign on Miami's roster and turned in a 6.41 ERA and 1.58 WHIP across 26.2 innings.

  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Yields run but earns win

Campbell (2-3) allowed a run on two hits and struck out one in one inning to earn the win Wednesday versus Washington. The right-hander gave up a solo home run to Josh Bell in the eighth inning, but Miami's four-run rally in the ninth put him in line for the win. Campbell has enjoyed little success this year with a 6.85 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 24:8 K:BB across 23.2 innings. He's likely to finish the season in a low-leverage role given his overall inconsistency.

  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Placed on injured list

Campbell hit the injured list for undisclosed reasons Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. While the reason for the move has yet to be revealed, the lack of a designation hints that Campbell was likely placed on the COVID-19 injured list, as has typically been the case in similar situations over the last two years. Zach Pop (finger) was activated off the injured list to take his place in the bullpen.

  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Returns from suspension

Campbell (suspension) was reinstated from the restricted list Wednesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Campbell appeared in five games earlier this season, posting a 8.74 ERA and 13:6 K:BB in 11.1 innings. He was stretched out to about four innings during his rehab assignment, so he can be a long-relief option or spot starter for the Marlins going forward.

  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Begins rehab assignment

Campbell (suspension) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Campbell has been out since early May, when he was suspended for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. He'll rehab until his suspension expires in early August, at which point he'll have to be added to the Marlins' active roster or returned to the Rays, as he was a Rule 5 selection back in December.

  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Handed 80-game ban

Campbell was hit with an 80-game suspension Monday after testing positive for Dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (DHCMT), Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Campbell made his big-league debut this season, allowing 14 runs (11 earned) in 11.1 innings across one start and four relief appearances. He'll now be ineligible to play again until early August, leaving the Marlins searching for another starter to fill out their rotation.

  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Handed loss in first start

Campbell (0-2) was charged with the loss Saturday against the Nationals after giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and zero walks over 3.2 innings. The 25-year-old received the first start of his big-league career Saturday but surrendered nine hits while recording 11 outs. Campbell has allowed 14 runs (11 earned) across 11.1 innings this season, but he could receive additional starts if Elieser Hernandez (biceps) is unable to return from the injured list in the near future.

  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Awarded first career start

Campbell is slated to start Saturday's game against the Nationals in Washington, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Campbell was initially scheduled to make his first big-league start last weekend in San Francisco, but poor weather leading up to opening pitch prompted the Marlins to instead deploy him as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen. The Rule 5 pick fanned five hitters over three innings of long relief, but he served up three runs on four hits and two walks to take the loss. Campbell will now get the chance to fill a traditional starting role, with his workload likely to be capped around four or five innings, depending on how efficiently he pitches. The 25-year-old may not be in line for any additional starts beyond this weekend with Elieser Hernandez (biceps) nearing a return from the injured list.

  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Surrenders three runs in loss

Campbell (0-1) allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five over three innings in a loss to the Giants on Sunday. Campbell was brought in to begin the second inning after the Marlins decided to deploy Ross Detwiler as an opener for Sunday's game. The 25-year-old surrendered all three of his runs in the second before settling down in the third and fourth frames. The Clemson product has not had an ideal start to his major-league career, as he's let up seven runs over 7.2 innings to go along with an abysmal 2.09 WHIP. It's unclear if the Marlins plan to move forward with piggybacking him after Detwiler or if they plan to return him to a traditional reliever's role.

  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Won't start Sunday's game

Updating a previous report, Campbell is expected to work in relief during Sunday's game against the Giants, while Ross Detwiler draws the start, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. According to McPherson, Miami still wants Campbell to cover the bulk of the innings Sunday, but the team elected to scratch him from the start since weather issues are expected in San Francisco around opening pitch at 4:05 p.m. ET. Rather than having Campbell get warmed up following a potential delay, the Marlins plan to have Detwiler or another reliever cover the early innings before the weather situation improves. Campbell has made three appearances out of the Miami bullpen to date, giving up six runs (four earned) over 4.2 innings.

  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Draws Sunday start

Campbell will start Sunday's series finale against the Giants, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports. Campbell will make his first career major-league start, though he has made three appearances out of the bullpen for Miami this season. • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Wins roster spot

The Marlins informed Campbell on Monday that he will be included on the Opening Day roster, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports. A Rule 5 pickup this past winter, Campbell will stick with the Marlins after submitting a 3.86 ERA and 1.43 WHIP over seven innings out of the bullpen in Grapefruit League play. The 25-year-old had been developed as a starter while rising up through the Rays' system, but Miami will likely deploy him as a low-leverage long reliever to begin 2021.

  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Back in camp

Campbell returned to camp Saturday after missing time to deal with a personal issue, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports. It's not clear exactly where Campbell stands in his preseason preparation. He wouldn't necessarily be favored to break camp in the big-league bullpen under ordinary circumstances, as he's yet to pitch above Double-A, but the Marlins would have to offer his services back to the Rays if he were to fail to win a job, as he was a Rule 5 selection back in December.

  • Marlins' Paul Campbell: Dealing with personal issue

Marlins general manager Kim Ng said Wednesday that Campbell has been dealing with a personal issue, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Campbell has yet to make an appearance in a spring game this year, and he's apparently been unavailable due to a personal matter. It's not yet clear when the right-hander could return or whether his absence could impact his availability for Opening Day.
