Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Bulk-relief role on tap
Cantillo is expected to pitch in bulk relief behind opener Daniel Espino in Friday's game against the Athletics, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
The Guardians will go back to the well with the Espino/Cantillo pairing for a second straight turn through the rotation after the duo combined for 10 punchouts over six scoreless frames in a 4-3 loss to the Twins last Saturday. Though Cantillo hasn't notched a victory in any of his last six appearances (five starts), being deployed in bulk relief should nonetheless increase his chances of qualifying for a win more than if he was used as a traditional starter.

Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Strikes out eight in bulk relief
Cantillo did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Twins, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out eight over four scoreless innings.
Cantillo entered in the third inning and dominated, throwing 37 of 56 pitches for strikes with 10 whiffs. It marked the first time the 26-year-old pitched in relief all year, and it was also his first scoreless outing since another four-inning effort July 29. He owns a 3.89 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 162:78 K:BB across 148 frames this season and lines up for a home matchup with the Athletics next weekend, should he return to the rotation.

Cantillo could be a candidate to pitch in bulk relief behind opener Daniel Espino in Saturday's game against the Twins,
Saturday would have been Gavin Williams' turn in the rotation, but the Guardians elected to push their ace back two days in the schedule so that he can pitch the series opener versus the division-leading White Sox. Espino will get the starting nod in Williams' stead, though he's expected to be limited to 1-to-2 innings before turning the game over to the bullpen. After most recently getting roughed up for four runs on three hits and five walks in just 2.1 innings in Monday's loss in Baltimore, Cantillo will be available on four days' rest and could pitch in relief for the first time all season. The Guardians also have Slade Cecconi on hand as another option to cover multiple innings out of the bullpen.

Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Ineffective in ninth loss
Cantillo (9-9) took the loss against Baltimore on Monday, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks in 2.1 innings. He struck out three.
Cantillo looked to be a step slow for a rare Monday afternoon start, landing only 35 of his 72 pitches for strikes. It was his shortest outing since the beginning of June, excluding a rain-shortened Aug. 9 start against the White Sox, and he's now conceded four earned runs in back-to-back appearances after giving up two runs or fewer in his prior six. The southpaw will look to right the ship this weekend in Minnesota, where he'll tote a 4.00 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 154:77 K:BB over 144 innings.

Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Takes loss against Toronto
Cantillo (9-8) took the loss against the Blue Jays on Wednesday, allowing nine runs (four earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out six across 5.1 innings.
Luck was not on Cantillo's side Wednesday, as a throwing error by Angel Genao in the second inning led to the Blue Jays scoring five runs in the frame, capped off by a three-run homer from Vladimir Guerrero. Cantillo finished his outing with nine whiffs and seven groundouts while tossing 102 pitches (66 strikes), and he has recorded at least five strikeouts in five of his last seven outings. He'll take a 3.81 ERA and 1.48 WHIP over 141.2 innings into his next start, which is lined up for next week against the Orioles at Camden Yards in what projects to be a two-start week for Cantillo.

Cantillo didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against the Angels, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and seven walks across six innings. He struck out one.
Cantillo somehow managed to turn in a quality start Wednesday despite issuing a career-high seven walks -- the southpaw allowed three runs over the first two innings before bearing down to blank the Halos over his final four frames. Command has been a struggle for Cantillo this season -- his 70 walks tie Robbie Ray for most given up in the majors. However, Cantillo's held opponents to just four earned runs across 16.2 frames in his last three outings, as he's lowered his ERA to 3.70 with a 1.45 WHIP and 145 strikeouts across 28 starts (136.1 innings) this season. Cantillo is currently in line to face the Blue Jays at home his next time out.

Cantillo (9-7) earned the win over San Diego on Saturday, allowing one run on one hit and three walks while striking out seven batters over six innings.
Cantillo yielded just one hit -- a single by the second batter he faced (Jake Cronenworth). The Padres were able to use that knock to manufacture a run, but Cantillo shut them down the rest of the way, allowing just two additional baserunners (both on free passes). Cantillo logged an impressive 15 whiffs on 87 pitches and finished with his first quality start and first outing of at least six innings since June 26.
