  • Red Sox's Garrett Crochet: No plans to change mix

Crochet said last Friday that he doesn't intend to have any radical change to his pitch mix for the upcoming season, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Crochet toyed with a sinker late last season and felt it gave him a fifth pitch to throw at any time, but the left-hander indicated he won't deviate much from the four-seamer/cutter usage this season. He made quite the jump in 2024, moving from the bullpen to the rotation while throwing 146 innings over 32 starts. Crochet projects as Boston's No. 1 starter.

  • Red Sox's Garrett Crochet: Dealt to Boston

The Red Sox acquired Crochet from the White Sox on Wednesday in exchange for Kyle Teel, Braden Montgomery, Chase Meidroth and Wikelman Gonzalez, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. The Red Sox missed out on free-agent lefties Max Fried and Blake Snell but have reeled in a big rotation addition via the trade route. Crochet, 25, had a breakout 2024 season in his first year as a starter, collecting a 3.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 209:33 K:BB over 146 innings. He is projected to earn around $3 million in 2025 and will be under team control in 2026, as well.

  • White Sox's Garrett Crochet: Another four-inning start

Crochet didn't factor into the decision Friday against Detroit, allowing four hits and a walk over four scoreless innings. He struck out six. Crochet's workload decreased dramatically down the stretch, though he was still impressive in limited work, allowing just one run over 12 innings in his final three outings. It was a breakthrough season overall for the left-hander, who proved to be one of the White Sox's few bright spots. Crochet will finish the year at 6-12 with a 3.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 209:33 K:BB across 146 innings.

  • White Sox's Garrett Crochet: Lasts two innings Saturday

Crochet (6-11) allowed four runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three over two innings to take the loss versus the Red Sox on Saturday. Crochet's workload continues to drop as part of the White Sox's plan to trim his innings. He wasn't particularly good in this game either -- he needed 51 pitches to get through two frames, laboring through a four-run first inning by Boston. While he's maintained a 3.83 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 191:32 K:BB over 134 innings across 29 starts this season, his current workload all but guarantees he won't pitch deep enough to be eligible for wins unless he's ultra efficient. His next start is projected to be at home versus the Athletics, but Crochet has limited fantasy utility over the remainder of 2024.

  • White Sox's Garrett Crochet: Big strikeout numbers in loss

Crochet (6-10) allowed one run on three hits while striking out eight over 3.1 innings in a loss to the Mets on Sunday. Crochet struck out the first seven batters he faced and saw the minimum through three innings. Francisco Lindor opened up the fourth with a home run, and Crochet wasn't afforded the opportunity to finish the inning after allowing two more base hits and eventually being pulled with one out in the frame after throwing just 57 pitches. The hard-throwing lefty hasn't reached five innings in a start since June 30, but he now has 21 strikeouts over his last 11.1 frames. For the year, Crochet owns a 3.61 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 188:31 K:BB in 132 innings. He lines up to make his next start on the road against the Red Sox over the weekend.

  • White Sox's Garrett Crochet: Fans four in four-inning start

Crochet allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out four batters over four innings in a no-decision against San Francisco on Wednesday. White Sox interim manager Grady Sizemore announced Wednesday that Crochet will be be on a workload limit for the rest of the campaign, so it's no surprise that he was pulled after four innings and 57 pitches. The left-hander may have gone a bit longer, though, if he hadn't faded in his final frame, allowing a pair of runs on three hits after beginning his outing with three scoreless, one-hit innings. Crochet managed a healthy 11 whiffs despite his low pitch count, and his four punchouts pushed him to 180 on the campaign. He still has a good chance to reach 200 strikeouts by the end of the season, but even that's not a given since Sizemore said Wednesday that Crochet's workload could "slowly decrease" as the season winds down.

  • White Sox's Garrett Crochet: Chased early in loss

Crochet (6-8) yielded five runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk over three innings Sunday, striking out three and taking a loss against Seattle. Crochet served up a two-run homer to Cal Raleigh in the first inning and never found his groove. Crochet was handed his second straight loss and has not earned a win since June 7. While he's reportedly still expected to receive a "normal workload," he's totaled just 13 innings through four starts this month. During that stretch, he's produced a 4.85 ERA while averaging just under 65 pitches per start. Crochet owns a 3.23 ERA with a terrific 160:26 K:BB through 114.1 innings this season. He's tentatively lined up to start in Minnesota next weekend, though the upcoming trade deadline could change those plans.

  • White Sox's Garrett Crochet: Goes four innings in loss

Crochet (6-7) took the loss Tuesday against the Rangers, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks across four innings. He struck out seven. Crochet threw only 74 pitches Tuesday, a result of the White Sox monitoring his workload down the stretch of the 25-year-old's first season as a starter. Both runs attributed to Crochet came in the first inning, with Adolis Garcia plating Robbie Grossman on a single and Josh Smith stealing home during a double steal. Crochet hasn't gone deeper than four innings in his last three starts, and he's logged a 3.07 ERA with 157 strikeouts in 111.1 innings on the year. The left-hander is tentatively scheduled to face the Mariners on Sunday.

  • White Sox's Garrett Crochet: Lifted after two perfect frames

Crochet didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 4-1 loss to the Pirates, striking out four in two perfect innings. White Sox manager Pedro Grifol had indicated Crochet would be on a pitch count for this outing, but the extremely quick hook kept the left-hander from putting together what might have been an exceptional performance -- he fired 22 of 28 pitches for strikes before exiting, including seven swinging strikes. Chicago is focused on Crochet's long-term health, or at least in keeping him healthy until the trade deadline, and the 25-year-old isn't expected to take the mound again until July 23 on the road against the Rangers.

  • White Sox's Garrett Crochet: Having workload monitored

Manager Pedro Grifol said Crochet will be on an unspecified pitch count Friday against the Pirates. Additionally, the left-hander will line up to work Chicago's fifth game after the All-Star break, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports. Crochet is nearly halfway through his first season as a starter and he's already thrown 105.1 innings, so the White Sox are taking steps to limit his workload. The 25-year-old's name has also been thrown around plenty in trade rumors, so it's not surprising to see the team take steps to ensure he remains healthy. Grifol didn't specify how long Crochet would be able to pitch Friday, or if the restrictions would continue. If he does end up being used as the team's fifth pitcher coming out of the All-Star break, he'd be on schedule to face the Rangers in Texas on 10 days rest.

  • White Sox's Garrett Crochet: Fans 11 in no-decision

Crochet came away with a no-decision in Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Rockies in 14 innings, striking out 11 over seven frames while allowing two earned runs on five hits and zero walks. After Crochet had thrown 85 and 91 pitches in his prior two starts, White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said Tuesday that the lefty's workload was "going to start dwindling" moving forward while the White Sox look to prioritize his long-term health. Even though he was mowing down the Colorado lineup for most of the afternoon, Crochet was still pulled after tossing 88 pitches and covering seven innings. If Crochet's pitch count continues to hover around the 85-to-90 range in his future starts, it could hurt his chances of coming away with wins, though he's notched only six wins through his first 18 starts while he's been supported by a weak White Sox lineup. Even so, Crochet remains a must-start fantasy option as long as he's active, as he's thus far provided elite ratios whenever he's taken the hill. The southpaw now owns a 3.02 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP and a league-leading 141 strikeouts over 101.1 innings this season. He's tentatively scheduled for a road start in Miami next weekend.

  • White Sox's Garrett Crochet: Workload 'going to start dwindling'

White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said Tuesday of Crochet that "we're going to start dwindling his workload down a little bit," the Associated Press reports. Crochet already sits at 94.1 innings in 2024 in his first pro season as a starting pitcher. He threw zero innings in 2022 and just 25 frames in 2023 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, and his highest innings total in college at Tennessee was 65. Therefore, his workload being curtailed at some point was inevitable. Grifol didn't divulge any specifics in regards to pitch counts or innings totals for Crochet, indicating he'll be flexible start-to-start based on how efficient the pitcher is. The manager also didn't mention anything about Crochet being shut down completely at some point, although it's certainly possible that will happen. It's not an ideal situation for fantasy managers, but those rostering Crochet will want to keep him in their lineups as long as he's making starts.

  • White Sox's Garrett Crochet: Racks up 13 strikeouts Thursday

Crochet allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out 13 batters over seven innings in a no-decision against Seattle on Thursday. Crochet was absolutely dominant in the outing, inducing 24 swinging strikes and finishing with a career-high 13 punchouts. The only run against the southpaw came via Tyler Locklear's first career homer in the fifth inning, and Crochet was in line for the victory before Michael Kopech blew a save opportunity in the ninth. Despite a few rough starts in April, Crochet has been a revelation for the White Sox and for fantasy managers this season. Over his past nine starts, he's recorded a 1.36 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 76:11 K:BB over 53 innings. Crochet is tied with Tyler Glasnow for the major-league lead with 116 punchouts on the campaign.

  • White Sox's Garrett Crochet: Punches out 10 in win

Crochet (5-4) yielded two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks over six innings Friday, striking out 10 and earning a win over the Red Sox. Crochet gave up a pair of runs in the third inning but only one was earned due to his own throwing error. He's produced quality starts in four straight appearances and six of his last seven. Crochet generated 17 whiffs and racked up double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time this season. Since April 29, he's produced a ridiculous 1.37 ERA with a 63:9 K:BB in eight starts. Crochet will carry a 3.33 ERA into his next start, which is expected to be in Seattle next week.

  • White Sox's Garrett Crochet: Delivers another quality start

Crochet didn't factor into the decision in an extra-inning loss to the Brewers on Saturday, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out eight. Crochet's now logged quality starts in five of his last six outings, posting a stellar 1.03 ERA in that span (35 innings). The 24-year-old left-hander continues to provide a bright spot on a rebuilding White Sox team -- Crochet's ERA is down to 3.49 on the year with a 0.93 WHIP and 93 strikeouts, good for second most in the league. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, currently slated for next week at home against Boston.

  • White Sox's Garrett Crochet: Blanks Nats for fourth win

Crochet (4-4) picked up the win in Wednesday's 2-0 victory over the Nationals, giving up three hits and three walks over five scoreless innings. He struck out six. The left-hander wasn't exactly efficient, tossing only 56 of 89 pitches for strikes, but Crochet lasted long enough to qualify for the win. After a rough stretch in April, the 24-year-old has allowed only three runs over his last three starts (1.59 ERA) with a stellar 24:1 K:BB in 17 innings. Crochet will look to keep rolling in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week in Toronto.

  • White Sox's Garrett Crochet: Impressive over six innings

Crochet (2-4) earned the win after he pitched six innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out six batters in Sunday's 5-1 victory over the Cardinals. Crochet was able to make it back-to-back strong outings Sunday, limiting the Cardinals to just one run on a fourth-inning solo home run by Willson Contreras. The left-hander secured his first quality start since April 3 in the win and he has now allowed just three runs over 11 innings in his last two outings. Crochet will carry a 5.31 ERA and 11.7 K/9 into his next projected start Friday at home versus the Guardians.

  • White Sox's Garrett Crochet: Gets back on track

Crochet didn't factor into the decision Monday, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk across five innings against the Twins. He struck out seven. After surrendering five or more runs in three straight starts, Crochet snapped out of the funk and only allowed the Twins to score on a two-run homer by Carlos Santana in the second frame. Crochet also had strong command, walking just one batter after yielding seven walks and two hit-by-pitches in his last three outings. Although Crochet has been inconsistent to kick off 2024, his strikeout stuff has been elite, boasting the second most K's in baseball. He's lined up for a Saturday start against the Cardinals.

  • White Sox's Garrett Crochet: K's eight in first-career start

Crochet (0-1) went six innings and took the loss Thursday against the Tigers, allowing one run on five hits and no walks. He struck out eight. It was an impressive performance for Crochet, who earned the Opening Day nod despite having never made a start in his previous 72 big-league outings. The lefty struck out eight while going toe-to-toe with Kansas City's Tarik Skubal, who also tossed six innings but didn't yield a single run. Crochet is set for a tougher matchup his next time out, as he currently lines up to face Atlanta at home next week.

  • White Sox's Garrett Crochet: Draws Opening Day nod

The White Sox announced Monday that Crochet will start the team's season opener March 28 versus the Tigers in Chicago. A converted reliever who has yet to make a big-league start and is just under two years removed from Tommy John surgery, Crochet is a bold choice for the Opening Day starting nod. The White Sox's decision to go with Crochet for the season opener speaks to the organization's lack of attractive alternatives, though the 24-year-old lefty at least brings some upside to the table. After struggling with his control late last season when he rejoined the White Sox bullpen following his recovery from elbow surgery, Crochet has looked far sharper this spring, striking out 12 and walking none while working around seven hits across nine scoreless frames. Fantasy managers shouldn't jump to any grand conclusions based on the spring numbers, but the improved results along with the White Sox's commitment to him in a starting role are enough to put Crochet on the radar as a late-round target in fantasy drafts.
