  • Astros' Tyler Ivey: Outrighted to Triple-A

Ivey cleared waivers Sunday and was outrighted to Triple-A Sugar Land, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. After being designated for assignment by the Astros on Friday, Ivey will remain in the organization. The righty made four appearances (three starts) in Sugar Land last year and posted a 4.91 ERA and 2.00 WHIP in 11 innings.

  • Astros' Tyler Ivey: DFA'd by Houston

Ivey was designated for assignment by the Astros on Thursday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. Ivey was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land in late March, and he'll now lose his spot on the 40-man roster as the regular season gets underway. The 25-year-old should remain with Sugar Land if he goes unclaimed on waivers.

  • Astros' Tyler Ivey: Heads to Triple-A

The Astros optioned Ivey to Triple-A Sugar Land on Thursday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Ivey, who made a 4.2-inning spot start for the Astros last May before spending the rest of the season in the minors, is expected to slot into the Sugar Land rotation to begin 2022 after missing out on a spot on Houston's Opening Day roster.

  • Astros' Tyler Ivey: Makes rehab appearance

Ivey (elbow) allowed three runs (zero earned) on two hits and two walks while striking out two over 1.2 innings for Triple-A Sugar Land on Sunday. This was Ivey's second rehab appearance, eight days after he threw in a Gulf Coast League game. The right-hander is currently on the 60-day injured list and does not figure to be part of Houston's postseason roster.

  • Astros' Tyler Ivey: Begins rehab assignment

Ivey (elbow) began a rehab assignment for the Astros' FCL affiliate Saturday, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. Ivey made his major-league debut in late May but has been shut down with a nerve issue in his elbow ever since that appearance. He's unlikely to be fully built up by the end of the season, but it's certainly a positive that he's able to pitch in some capacity.

  • Astros' Tyler Ivey: Done for season

Ivey will miss the rest of the season due to a nerve issue in his elbow, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. He had apparently been pitching hurt for quite some time and finally spoke up about it since nothing was working for him. While he suffered a Grade 1 UCL strain in 2019, there is reportedly no damage to his UCL this time around. However, Ivey may require Thoracic Outlet Syndrome surgery, which is a very significant procedure for a pitcher. The best-case scenario is that he is healthy for spring training next year, but he could be sidelined longer than that.

  • Astros' Tyler Ivey: Sent down after spot start

Ivey gave up four earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three in 4.2 innings Friday against the Rangers. He did not factor into the decision and was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land after the game, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. It was a spot start for the 25-year-old righty, and the Astros won't need a fifth starter again until June 1 against Boston, at which point Jake Odorizzi (forearm) and/or Jose Urquidy (shoulder) could be activated from the injured list. Ivey had given up five runs and five walks in 6.1 innings at Triple-A prior to getting the call, so he has some refinement left to do on the farm.

  • Astros' Tyler Ivey: Promoted to big leagues

Ivey was called up Wednesday by the Astros and will start Friday's game against the Rangers, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. Ivey has allowed five earned runs in 6.1 innings across two minor-league games this season. Widely considered one of the Astros' top prospects, the righty will be making his big-league debut Friday.

  • Astros' Tyler Ivey: Optioned to Triple-A

Ivey was optioned to Triple-A on Tuesday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. The 24-year-old righty did not allow a run and struck out six over four innings this spring. He also walked three while surrendering just one hit. Ivey could provide rotation or bullpen depth later this season.

  • Astros' Tyler Ivey: Shielded from Rule 5 draft

Ivey was added to the Astros' 40-man roster Friday, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. Ivey has been unable to build up his workload much over the past two seasons, so that will be a priority in 2021 as he looks to prove that he can be a starter long term. He has a mid-90s fastball and two breaking balls with plus potential, so he could be a quality reliever if things don't work out in the rotation.

  • Astros' Tyler Ivey: Limited spring use

Ivey made one Grapefruit League appearance and struck out two in a scoreless inning. Ivey, a 2017 third-round draft pick, is the Astros' fourth-ranked prospect per RotoWire, but he is coming off an abbreviated 2019 season. He was first suspended for using a foreign substance, then had a mid-summer scare when what had been described as a mild UCL sprain turned out to be nothing serious, as Troy Schulte of MiLB.com reported last summer. Other than that, Ivey was electric for Double-A Corpus Christi, going 4-0 with a 1.57 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 61 strikeouts over 46 innings. That came after posting a 2.97 ERA with 135 punchouts in 112 innings over two levels the previous season. The right-hander credited his strong results to improved command. "In the beginning, they tell you to just throw everything and develop everything," he said. "Then as time goes on, you want to try to be able to put it where you want it." He's expected to start at Double-A in 2020 with a promotion to Triple-A Round Rock likely if he continues on his current trajectory.

  • Astros' Tyler Ivey: Back from suspension

Ivey (suspension) went five innings without allowing a hit in Double-A Corpus Christi's 2-1 win over Amarillo on Saturday. Ivey fanned eight and walked two in his return from suspension. The ban was believed to be related to his April 12 ejection for having a foreign substance on his glove. The 23-year-old righty has covered five innings in each of his last three appearances with Corpus Christi, allowing a total of five hits with a 23:3 K:BB in that span. There are a number of arms ahead of him in the Astros organization, but Ivey is an impressive prospect in his own right, one we could see debut early on next season.

  • Astros' Tyler Ivey: Dominating at Double-A

Ivey gave up two hits while striking out eight in five innings of relief Wednesday for Double-A Corpus Christi. He now boasts a 0.82 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 16:3 K:BB in 11 innings this season through three appearances. The Astros like to piggyback starters in the minors, so Ivey may not always be the first to take the ball, but he will typically log at least four innings per outing. Ivey has a quality low-90s fastball and a pair of breaking balls that could each become plus offerings. He could reach the majors in the first half of the 2020 season.
