Mason McCoy: Let go by San Diego
The Padres non-tendered McCoy on Friday.
McCoy spent most of the 2024 regular season with Triple-A El Paso, where he slashed .260/.329/.382 with 25 stolen bases, five home runs and 50 RBI over 432 plate appearances. McCoy did manage to make 19 major-league appearances for the Padres and had a slash line of .204/.278/.245 with one stolen base and three RBI over 57 plate appearances. The Padres placed McCoy on the 10-day injured list Sunday with back inflammation.
McCoy's IL stint is backdated to Thursday, making him eligible to return for the Padres' final game of the regular season Sept. 29. He has appeared in 19 games with the Padres this season, slashing .204/.278/.245. Padres' Mason McCoy: Loses everyday role
McCoy is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants.
On the bench for the fifth game in a row, McCoy appears to have lost hold of his everyday gig at shortstop in the absence of Ha-Seong Kim (shoulder). Even though Kim remains on the injured list, the Padres have opted to shift Xander Bogaerts from second base to shortstop to open up regular playing time in the infield for Donovan Solano.

Padres' Mason McCoy: Sitting Tuesday
McCoy is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mariners.
Since returning to the majors Aug. 21, McCoy has started in 16 games, and Tuesday marks the shortstop's third omission from the lineup in that span. Xander Bogaerts is shifting from second to shortstop with Jake Cronenworth sliding over from first to second base. Donovan Solano enters the lineup for McCoy as the first baseman, batting eighth.

Padres' Mason McCoy: Taking seat Thursday
McCoy is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game in St. Louis, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
McCoy had made seven straight starts at shortstop as the Padres deal with the loss of Ha-Seong Kim (shoulder), but he will begin Thursday's game on the bench. Tyler Wade will get the nod at shortstop for San Diego and will bat ninth.

Padres' Mason McCoy: Seeing regular playing time
McCoy is batting ninth and playing shortstop Saturday against the Mets.
Saturday's contest will be McCoy's third consecutive start at shortstop, as he's seemingly supplanted Tyler Wade as the Padres' replacement for Ha-Seong Kim (shoulder). Since being called up Wednesday, McCoy is 3-for-8 with two runs and an RBI.

Padres' Mason McCoy: Returns to big leagues
The Padres selected McCoy's contract from Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
McCoy will reach the big leagues for the second time in his career after previously getting a cup of coffee with the Blue Jays late in the 2023 season. The 29-year-old has enjoyed a decent season at El Paso with a .260/.329/.382 slash line and 25 stolen bases over 432 plate appearances, though it comes with the caveat that he's much older than most of his competition and has done most of his damage at hitter-friendly ballparks. McCoy is capable of playing both middle-infield spots and will give the Padres another option at shortstop while Ha-Seong Kim (shoulder) is on the shelf, though Tyler Wade looks like he'll be first in line to replace Kim in the everyday lineup.

Padres' Mason McCoy: Cut from big-league camp
The Padres reassigned McCoy to minor-league camp Monday.
McCoy reached the big leagues for the first time in 2023 as a member of the Blue Jays, appearing in six games but logging just one plate appearances. He was moved off the Blue Jays' 40-man roster in September and caught on with the Padres on a minor-league deal in November, but the Friars likely don't envision the 28-year-old serving as anything more than organizational infield depth this season. McCoy is expected to report to Triple-A El Paso to begin the season.

McCoy, 28, is in his third full year at the Triple-A level in 2023, having put up a .737 OPS with 11 homers and 20 stolen bases at Tacoma. He's capable of playing every position but pitcher and catcher and will provide the Blue Jays with some utility depth at Triple-A Buffalo.

Mariners' Mason McCoy: Misses out on Opening Day roster
The Mariners reassigned McCoy to minor-league camp Monday.
The soon-to-be 28-year-old McCoy has yet to make his MLB debut and doesn't possess a spot on the Mariners' 40-man roster, but he came close to winning a reserve role on Seattle's Opening Day squad on the back of his strong defense at three infield spots. McCoy produced a meager .571 OPS, however, in his 44 at-bats in Cactus League play, and his deficiencies with the bat may prevent him from getting an extended look as a regular if he surfaces in the majors at some point later in 2023.

Mariners' Mason McCoy: Chance to make Opening Day roster
McCoy has a chance to make the Opening Day roster for the Mariners, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
He has impressed during spring training with his defense, and the fact that the Mariners will open the season without Dylan Moore (oblique) certainly helps McCoy's chances of making the roster. The 27-year-old is capable of playing all over the infield, and would likely be the backup to J.P. Crawford at short, Eugenio Suarez at third and Kolten Wong at second.
