Top CJ Van Eyk News

  • Blue Jays' CJ Van Eyk: Could be rotation option

Van Eyk could be the pitcher called up to replace Cody Ponce (knee) in the big-league rotation, Mitch Bannon of The Athletic reports.

Lazaro Estrada was the pitcher promoted in the immediate wake of Ponce's injury, but he's unlikely to be used as anything more than a long reliever. Van Eyk is on turn at Triple-A Buffalo, and he looked good in his season debut Tuesday, allowing one run over four innings with a 5:1 K:BB. The 27-year-old right-hander isn't yet on the 40-man roster, so an additional move would need to be made to open up a spot, but with Ponce expected to miss more than two months he could be shifted to the 60-day IL to make room.

  • Blue Jays' CJ Van Eyk: Rehabbing in Dunedin

Van Eyk (elbow) has struck out eight while allowing one earned run in seven innings across two rehab starts for Single-A Dunedin.

He should be nearing a return to High-A Vancouver. Van Eyk underwent Tommy John surgery in September of 2021. He has a chance to be a starting pitcher long term if he can throw more strikes than he did pre-injury (11 percent walk rate at High-A in 2021).

  • Blue Jays' CJ Van Eyk: Should be ready for spring

Van Eyk (elbow) is tracking toward being a full participant for the Blue Jays during spring training, Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca reports.

The 24-year-old right-hander is nearing the finish line in his recovery from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in September 2021. Van Eyk will likely continue to ramp up the intensity of his throwing sessions this winter before reporting to the Blue Jays' spring camp in Florida in February. Expect the 2020 second-round pick to open the 2023 season at Double-A New Hampshire or High-A Vancouver.

  • Blue Jays' CJ Van Eyk: Recovering from Tommy John surgery

Van Eyk is recovering from Tommy John surgery that he underwent in September, Sam Dykstra of MLB.com reports.

Given the timing of the surgery, we likely won't see Van Eyk pitching in games until spring training of next year. The 23-year-old righty struggled with his command last year at High-A, logging a 5.83 ERA and 11.0 percent walk rate in 19 starts.
