Cubs' Luis Vazquez: Picking up rare start
Vazquez will start at shortstop and bat ninth in Monday's game against the Phillies.
With Dansby Swanson resting in the series opener, Vazquez will pick up his second start in three games but just his second overall since being recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Aug. 23. Vazquez has logged just eight plate appearances between two stints with the Cubs on the season and is still looking for his first MLB hit.

The Cubs recalled Vazquez from Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Ryan Herrera of AllCHGO.com reports.
Vazquez will relace David Bote -- who was designated for assignment -- on the Cubs' 26-man roster. The 24-year-old Vazquez appeared in a pair of big-league games at the end of May before returning to Iowa, slashing .263/.327/.484 across 105 plate appearances since. The infielder could mix in at second base, third base or shortstop as needed.

Cubs' Luis Vazquez: Shelved at Triple-A
Triple-A Iowa placed Vazquez on its 7-day injured list Friday with an unspecified injury.
Vazquez is on Iowa's IL for the second time in less than a month, though it's unclear if his latest injury is related to the previous one. He got a brief cup of coffee with the Cubs in late May but has otherwise spent the entire 2024 season at Iowa, where he's slashed .255/.347/.389 with five home runs and one stolen base over 244 plate appearances.

The Cubs recalled Vazquez from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday.
Vazquez, 27, has hit .262 with three home runs over 39 games with Iowa this season. He will provide some reinforcement in the infield with Nico Hoerner (hamstring) banged up and would be making his major-league debut if/when he gets into a game.

Cubs' Luis Vazquez: Sent to minor-league camp
The Cubs optioned Vazquez to Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Vazquez was added to the 40-man roster in November in order to protect him from being selected during the Rule 5 Draft, but he was unable to carve out a place on Chicago's Opening Day roster. The 24-year-old had an .809 OPS in 66 games at Triple-A last season and is a likely bet to make his MLB debut at some point in 2024.

Cubs' Luis Vazquez: Added to 40-man roster
The Cubs selected Vazquez's contract from Triple-A Iowa on Monday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Vazquez had a breakout season between Double-A Tennessee and Iowa in 2023, slashing .271/.361/.456 with 20 homers and 10 steals. It seems unlikely that he'll crack the Cubs' Opening Day roster next year, but the 24-year-old utility player could debut at some point in 2024.

Cubs' Luis Vazquez: Offensive breakout at age 23
Vazquez is slashing .261/.390/.436 with nine home runs, six steals and a 20.1 percent strikeout rate in 63 games for Triple-A Iowa.
A 6-foot shortstop who turns 24 in October, Vazquez slashed .284/.340/.483 with 11 home runs in 58 games with Double-A Tennessee earlier this season and has finished strong at Triple-A. He has always been a gifted defensive infielder, but this was an offensive breakout season for Vazquez. He had only 16 home runs in 341 career games entering the year and already has 20 in 121 games this season. The Cubs will likely add Vazquez to the 40-man roster this offseason to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, which would set up a 2024 big-league debut.
