Tigers' Garrett Hill: Activated at Double-A
Triple-A Toledo reinstated Hill (lat) from its 7-day injured list May 23 and assigned him to Double-A Erie.
Hill attended big-league spring training as a non-roster invitee but never built much momentum for a spot in the Tigers' Opening Day bullpen after suffering a right lat strain in mid-February. He remained out of action until he started an extended rehab assignment with Single-A Lakeland on April 12. Over 13 outings with Lakeland spanning 17.2 innings, Hill posted a 5.60 ERA and 1.64 WHIP before he was cleared to head to Erie. He debuted for the Double-A affiliate Friday, giving up two unearned runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two over one inning out of the bullpen.

Tigers' Garrett Hill: Reassigned to minor-league camp
Hill (lat) was reassigned to minor-league camp by the Tigers on Friday.
Hill has been dealing with a lat strain since mid-February, which has interrupted his spring training routine. The righty will now look to get healthy in the minors before potentially returning to Detroit as a bullpen option at some point. Hill made 26 appearances for the Tigers over the last two seasons, including eight starts, and has a career 5.09 ERA.

Tigers' Garrett Hill: Nursing lat strain
Hill was diagnosed Wednesday with a mild right lat strain, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Hill felt discomfort during a bullpen session last week and will be re-evaluated in 7-to-10 days. The right-hander is in camp as a non-roster invitee, and the injury probably ruins any chance he had of cracking the Opening Day roster.

The Tigers re-signed Hill to a minor-league contract Sunday.
Hill was non-tendered by Detroit earlier this month but will remain in the organization. It's not clear whether he was given an invitation to the major-league side of spring training as part of the deal. Hill was torched for 20 runs (16 earned) over 15.2 major-league innings in 2023.

Tigers' Garrett Hill: Recalled from Toledo
Detroit recalled Hill from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Hill will join the active roster as a replacement for Alex Faedo, who was placed on the injured list Saturday with right middle finger discomfort. Hill struggled mightily in his limited time with Detroit back in April with a 10.27 ERA over seven innings, and his results haven't been overly impressive across his 15 outings at Triple-A (4.78 ERA, 1.69 WHIP in 26.1 innings). Though he's largely served in a relief role at Toledo, Hill built up to three innings in his most recent outing Thursday, so he could be able to provide the Tigers with a decent amount of length as a starter or primary pitcher out of the bullpen when Faedo's next turn in the rotation comes up Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Tigers' Garrett Hill: Still battling for role
Hill is likely battling for one of three remaining bullpen spots in Detroit along with Tyler Holton, Chasen Shreve, Trey Wingenter and Beau Brieske, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Holton and Shreve are both lefties, so the Tigers will likely want to keep one or both of them as situational options. Hill may still make the team as a long reliever, as he made eight starts last season as a rookie. The righty held his own with a 4.03 ERA, though he only had 40 strikeouts across 60.1 innings, so he seems unlikely to dominate batters out of the bullpen.

Hill tossed two scoreless innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. He allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one.
Hill drew the start and looked sharp while logging 34 pitches. The righty made eight starts for the Tigers in 2022, though he'll likely start this season in a long-relief role with Matthew Boyd and Spencer Turnbull back in the mix and Michael Lorenzen joining the team. Hill could force his way into the rotation at some point if he pitches well, however.

Tigers' Garrett Hill: Set for bullpen role?
Hill could be in line to start the year in Detroit's bullpen, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Hill made eight starts and nine relief appearances for the Tigers as a rookie last year, compiling a 4.03 ERA and 1.36 WHIP across 60.1 total innings. Detroit's rotation may be full with Matthew Boyd and Spencer Turnbull back in the mix and Michael Lorenzen joining the team, but Hill pitched well enough to earn a look in relief, and starting isn't out of the question at some point.

Tigers' Garrett Hill: Pitches well in relief Friday
Hill pitched three scoreless innings of relief in Friday's loss to the Rangers. He allowed two hits and a walk while striking out four.
Detroit starter Tyler Alexander allowed seven runs across three innings, but Hill came in and pitched much better. The righty recently shifted to the bullpen with Eduardo Rodriguez (personal) rejoining the rotation, though the likes of Alexander and Drew Hutchison aren't the most well-established starters toward the back of the staff. That leaves open the possibility of Hill picking up more starts at some point, though Bryan Garcia could also get recalled from Triple-A Toledo if the Tigers need another starter. As a starter this season, Hill has logged a 4.22 ERA and 1.31 WHIP across 42.2 innings (eight starts).
