Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: With Team Venezuela
Abreu went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Team Venezuela in Friday's 6-2 win over the Netherlands at the World Baseball Classic.
Prior to the WBC, Abreu appeared in six Grapefruit League games for Boston, going 2-for-14 with three walks. The Red Sox would like to see the lefty-hitting Abreu become an everyday right fielder, against both righties and lefties, but he had just three plate appearances against left-handers (0-for-3) during his time in Boston's camp. Abreu did have one at-bat against a lefty Friday and singled in a run during Venezuela's four-run fifth inning.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Will face more lefties in 2026
The Red Sox plan to challenge Abreu to face more left-handers this coming season, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Abreu has mostly been limited to facing right-handers since his MLB arrival in 2023, but the Red Sox are ready to give him a shot against all starters. "With Willy and some of the lefties, we have to see if they can do it," manager Alex Cora said. "It's about that time, especially with Abreu. If he can hit lefties and hit for power and play defense the way he's done the last few years, he can be the guy." Abreu's made just 15 starts against lefties and has 145 total plate appearances against southpaws since 2023, struggling to a .205 average and .589 OPS.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Sitting out versus Fried
Abreu is not in the lineup Tuesday for Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series against the Yankees.
With lefty Max Fried drawing the start for the Yankees, the left-handed-swinging Abreu will yield to Nate Eaton in right field. Abreu went just 3-for-21 with eight strikeouts down the stretch of the regular season after returning from a calf injury.

Abreu will get a breather Thursday after going 2-for-11 with a run scored and four strikeouts since returning from the injured list Sunday. Rob Refsnyder will fill the void in right field and bat eighth.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Returning to action Sunday
The Red Sox activated Abreu (calf) from the 10-day injured list prior to Sunday's game in Tampa Bay, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
He'll end up missing a little over a month with the calf strain and will start designated hitter and bat eighth Sunday against righty Joe Boyle. The Red Sox are tentatively scheduled to face five right-handed pitchers to start the upcoming week before potentially facing a lefty in the regular-season finale Sept. 28 versus the Tigers, so the left-handed-hitting Abreu should get plenty of opportunities to contribute in the final week.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Likely returning Sunday
Manager Alex Cora said Saturday that he expects Abreu (calf) to return from the injured list Sunday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Abreu has been sidelined with a strained calf for more than a month, but it appears he is nearing the end of his recovery. The 26-year-old outfielder is slashing .253/.325/.486 on the season and will almost certainly reclaim his role as Boston's primary right fielder once activated.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Not returning Saturday
Abreu (calf) is not in Saturday's lineup against the Rays, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports.
Abreu, who has missed almost a month with a right calf strain, worked out Friday and flew to join the team in Tampa Bay on Saturday, but he isn't in the lineup. It's unclear when Abreu will be activated from the 10-day injured list, but it could be any day.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Could be activated Saturday
Abreu (calf) will fly to Tampa Bay on Saturday, and a decision regarding his activation from the 10-day injured list is expected to be made shortly after, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Abreu had a good workout at Fenway on Friday, and he'll join the team in Florida ahead of Saturday's game. It's unclear if he'll be activated Saturday or Sunday specifically, but a return during Boston's series in Tampa Bay is expected. The outfielder has been on the shelf since Aug. 21 due to a strained right calf.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Will not travel with team
Abreu (calf) will not fly with the Red Sox to Tampa Bay after Thursday's game and instead will remain in Boston to get in another workout at Fenway Park on Friday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
If Abreu's workout goes well, he could fly out on his own to rejoin the team Saturday or Sunday. Abreu's recovery from a right calf strain has not come along as quickly as hoped, as he's already missed a month of action and there still isn't a clear target date for his return to the active roster.
