Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Ready for spring debut
Abreu (illness) is starting in right field and batting eighth in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
The 25-year-old has been battling a gastrointestinal issue throughout camp but has been cleared for his first game action of spring training. Manager Alex Cora previously indicated that Abreu wasn't likely to be ready for Opening Day since the outfielder has to rebuild strength after losing some weight, but the outfielder now appears to have a chance to be ready for the start of the season.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Cleared for Grapefruit League debut
Abreu (illness) has been cleared by doctors and will make his Grapefruit League debut Saturday against the Atlanta, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports.
Abreu has been held out of games this spring due to a gastrointestinal issue that resulted in some weight loss, but he's progressed enough to play this weekend. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said last week that it was unlikely Abreu would be ready in time for Opening Day, but on Friday he didn't rule out the possibility.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Unlikely to be ready for opener
Abreu (illness) is unlikely to be ready in time for Opening Day, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Abreu has been behind schedule in the Red Sox's camp due to a gastrointestinal issue and remains limited to just tracking pitches on a Trajekt machine. The 25-year-old shouldn't miss too much time in the regular season, but it does appear a stint on the injured list will be required. Abreu's absence would potentially create an opening for Roman Anthony (illness) or Kristian Campbell in the outfield, but if the club isn't ready to make that move yet it could go with Rob Refsnyder and others in right field to cover Abreu's absence.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Working out, but iffy for opener
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Abreu (illness) has resumed swinging a bat and will play catch Monday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Abreu is recovering from an unspecified illness that has resulted in some weight loss. While Cora is hopeful Abreu can regain the weight and be ready in time for Opening Day, the outfielder's availability is not a given. It's not clear when Abreu might be ready for Grapefruit League games, and Cora indicated that the Abreu could need to make up for lost at-bats by facing off against minor-league pitchers and/or hitting against the Trajekt robot.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Not cleared for baseball activities
Manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Abreu (illness) has been cleared to work out but "cannot do baseball activities yet," Christopher Smith of MassLive.com.
The 25-year-old has been sidelined by an illness early in camp, and he underwent additional lab tests Monday with the results expected to come Wednesday afternoon. Abreu should be considered day-to-day for now, and the lab results should soon provide more clarity on his status.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Still hampered by illness
Abreu continues to battle an illness and hasn't been cleared to be on the field, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Manager Alex Cora said Saturday that Abreu had some labs done Friday, which indicated that "there's still something there." It's unclear how long the outfielder will be held out, but with spring training having just kicked off, there's no reason at this point to think that Abreu is in danger of missing time at the start of the regular season. If healthy, Abreu is slated to start in right field against right-handed pitching for Boston this year.
