• Orioles' Yennier Cano: Agrees to terms for 2026

  Cano and the Orioles agreed to a one-year, $1.6 million contract to avoid arbitration Thursday, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports. Cano turned in the worst season of his career in 2025, posting a 5.12 ERA and 1.48 WHIP with only 53 strikeouts across 58 innings. Nevertheless, he still got plenty of high-leverage usage and racked up 17 holds, but he'll likely need to get back on track to maintain that role in 2026. This was his first year of arbitration eligibility.

• Orioles' Yennier Cano: Implodes Saturday

  Cano (3-7) took the loss and blew a save opportunity against the Blue Jays on Saturday, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while recording just one out. With Baltimore up 4-2 in the ninth inning, Keegan Akin got the first stab at notching a save. He gave up two one-out singles and was subsequently relieved by Cano, who quickly gave up a pair of singles that plated a pair of runs to tie the score. The only out Cano recorded came on a sacrifice fly by Alejandro Kirk that brought home the winning run for Toronto. Cano came into Saturday having allowed just one run over his previous eight appearances, but he's now blown five of his seven save chances on the campaign.

  Cano earned the save in Wednesday's 7-5 win over San Diego, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning. Cano was sharp Wednesday, striking out a pair to lock down his second save this season, his first since July 5. The 31-year-old Cano has pitched better of late, allowing just one run in his last six appearances (5.2 innings) to reclaim a high-leverage role in Baltimore's bullpen. Overall, his ERA sits at 5.07 with a 1.45 WHIP and 47:22 K:BB across 49.2 innings this season.

• Orioles' Yennier Cano: Implodes in sixth loss

  Cano (1-6) was charged with the loss in Wednesday's 9-8 defeat to the Blue Jays, allowing five runs on four hits and no walks with no strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning. The five runs allowed were a season high for Cano, who served up a home run for the first time since his June 18 outing in Tampa Bay. Although closer Felix Bautista (shoulder) is on the shelf and Seranthony Dominguez has been traded away, Wednesday's showing doesn't bode well for the possibility of Cano receiving future save opportunities. Since the start of May, Cano has a dreadful 7.22 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 30:13 K:BB covering 28.2 innings.

Cano tallied his 13th hold of the campaign, and he bounced back after surrendering three runs his last time out versus Miami. Although the 31-year-old right-hander has a shaky 4.54 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over 33.2 innings, he does have a respectable 37:11 K:BB while working mostly as a setup man for closer Felix Bautista this season.

Cano's stint back in the minors was brief, with the reliever allowing one run with two strikeouts over two innings of work for the Tides. He's posted a 4.73 ERA with the Orioles this season, though that's come with a much more promising 31:8 K:BB over 26.2 innings. Cano had been demoted to a low-leverage relief role before being sent down, and he'll likely return to that role for now.

  The Orioles optioned Cano to Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday. An All-Star in 2023, Cano took a step back statistically in 2024 and has continued to see his performance trend downward in 2025. Though he's still tied for second on the team with 11 holds, Cano had been working mostly in middle relief since the beginning of June and owned underwhelming ratios (4.73 ERA, 1.39 WHIP) over 30 appearances. After seeing action Friday and Saturday, Cano was unlikely to be available for another day or two, so the Orioles elected to send him to Triple-A in favor of a fresh relief arm in right-hander Yaramil Hiraldo.

It was a much-needed bounce-back showing by Cano, who had given up five runs across his prior three outings and nine runs over his previous seven games. His usage in the eighth inning of a tie game Saturday suggests he hasn't dropped down the pecking order as a setup man in Baltimore's bullpen despite his recent shortcomings, but Cano owns an unsightly 12.79 ERA and 2.05 WHIP over his last 6.1 innings.

With Orioles closer Craig Kimbrel yielding five runs (three earned) and throwing 49 pitches across two appearances Thursday and Friday, Cano slotted in for the save opportunity Sunday. Cano was shaky, allowing the bases to be loaded with just one out, but a pair of groundouts ended the game, giving Cano his first save since June 16. Kimbrel remains the presumptive closer, but the 30-year-old Cano has pitched well this season and would be the top replacement option if Kimbrel's struggles continue. Craig Kimbrel was pulled from the game after allowing two hits and a walk in the bottom of the ninth. Cano entered and walked the first batter he faced to load the bases, but the 30-year-old ultimately worked his way out of it with a strikeout and a flyout. Kimbrel earned the save in Friday's game but had back-to-back blown saves to end April and has been nursing a back issue recently. If Kimbrel needs some time to get right, Cano would presumably step into the closer's role after he recorded eight saves and 31 holds a season ago.

The setup man has added a hold, a blown save and a loss, but he's generally been solid so far. He's also at a 6:2 K:BB over 6.2 innings this season. Craig Kimbrel remains the Orioles' closer, but Cano is very near the top of the leverage ladder for times when Kimbrel is unavailable.
