Report: Alex Bregman to Opt Out of Contract with Red Sox

Player Outlook
Caleb Durbin was acquired by the Brewers from the Yankees last winter and spent the first couple weeks of 2025 in the minors, but he was called up in mid-April and finished third in voting for NL Rookie of the Year. He operated as Milwaukee's primary third baseman and totaled 11 home runs, 18 steals, 53 RBI and 60 runs along with a .256/.334/.387 slash line in 136 games. He showed solid plate discipline with a 6.3 percent walk rate and 9.9 percent strikeout rate, but he ranked in the 12th percentile or worse in barrel rate (4.0 percent), hard-hit rate (26.9 percent) and average exit velocity (85.2 mph). The poor quality of contact resulted in a .255 xBA and .355 xSLG, so he'll likely need to improve in that area to maintain similar power production. Durbin certainly doesn't profile as a prototypical third baseman and is better suited for the keystone, and it's possible he gets shifted there after being traded to Boston during the offseason. Dual-position eligibility would come in handy, but regardless of which position he's at, Durbin should have a chance to reach 20 stolen bases in 2026 but is likely to have a limited fantasy ceiling without improving his quality of contact.

  • Red Sox's Caleb Durbin: Looks healthy for camp

Durbin (elbow) was spotted taking part in infield drills at third base during Monday's full-squad workout, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Durbin underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his right elbow in late October, but he doesn't look like he'll be operating with any restrictions in his first spring training with the Red Sox, who acquired him last week in a six-player deal with the Brewers. It should be noted that Marcelo Mayer took part in drills at second base. Where Durbin and Mayer, both of whom have experience at second and third base, eventually land is one story in Boston's spring training. During his rookie campaign with Milwaukee, Durbin served as the team's primary third baseman and was a threat on the basepaths (18 steals in 24 attempts) and made contact at an elite clip (9.9 percent strikeout rate), but his 26.9 percent hard-hit rate ranked in the fourth percentile of all batted and limited his slugging production. With that in mind, Durbin's bat may profile better at second base rather than third base, but the Red Sox will likely give him a look at both positions throughout the spring.

  • Red Sox's Caleb Durbin: Shipped to Boston

The Red Sox acquired Durbin (elbow), Andruw Monasterio, Anthony Seigler and a Comp B pick from the Brewers on Monday in exchange for Kyle Harrison, David Hamilton and Shane Drohan, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Durbin had a solid rookie season in Milwaukee, slashing .256/.334/.387 with 11 home runs and 18 stolen bases over 136 regular-season contests. Slated to turn 26 later this month, Durbin mostly played third base for the Brewers and that could be where he slots in for the Red Sox, but he's also an option to handle second base. Durbin underwent arthroscopic elbow surgery in October but should be ready to go for the beginning of spring training.

  • Brewers' Caleb Durbin: Scheduled for surgery

Durbin will undergo arthroscopic elbow surgery Oct. 30, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Durbin's elbow began bothering him toward the end of the season, so he will now go under the knife to address the issue. The 25-year-old infielder is expected to be fully recovered by the time spring training begins in February.

  • Brewers' Caleb Durbin: Sitting Friday

Durbin is not in the Brewers' starting lineup against the Reds on Friday. Durbin will be on the bench for Friday's series opener while Andruw Monasterio starts at third base and bats eighth. Durbin went 0-for-8 over his last two starts and has a .766 OPS with six steals, 10 runs, two home runs and seven RBI over 84 plate appearances since Sept. 1.

  • Brewers' Caleb Durbin: Pair of steals Tuesday

Durbin went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases during Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the Rangers. Durbin logged multiple stolen bases for the third time this season, bringing his season total to 15 steals. The infielder is in the midst of a minor cold spell at the plate, having just one hit in his last 14 at-bats. He's slashing .253/.327/.386 in 443 plate appearances in 2025.

  • Brewers' Caleb Durbin: Getting breather Wednesday

Durbin isn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies. After going 9-for-24 with a homer, two RBI, three runs scored and a steal over his last six games, Durbin will get a chance to rest his legs Wednesday while Anthony Seigler starts at the hot corner.

  • Brewers' Caleb Durbin: Drives in team's lone run

Durbin went 1-for-3 with an RBI double during Saturday's 7-1 loss to San Francisco. Durbin supplied the Brewers' only run Saturday on an RBI double to right field in the second inning. It broke a four-game hitless streak for Durbin, who got the start at second base and could be seeing more time at the keystone if Brice Turang is out for an extended period of time while nursing a wrist injury.

  • Brewers' Caleb Durbin: Hits late home run

Durbin went 1-for-5 with a two-run homer in Tuesday's win over the Pirates. Durbin joined in on the home-run party in the ninth inning, becoming the fifth Brewer to leave the yard with a two-run blast. It was just the second hit for Durbin over his last eight games, though he's only struck out once in 22 at-bats over that span.

  • Brewers' Caleb Durbin: Sitting again versus righty

Durbin is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta. With left-hander Joey Wentz starting for Atlanta on Tuesday, Durbin rejoined the starting nine and went 0-for-4 with a walk across his five plate appearances, but he's still maintained a robust .320/.393/.440 slash line over 84 total plate appearances versus southpaws this season. Durbin has been far less effective against righties (.302 wOBA, 94 wRC+ in 242 plate appearances), though serviceable enough to remain the Brewers' best option at third base in those matchups. Even so, Durbin will find himself on the bench for the fourth straight game against a righty (Spencer Strider) while Brewers manager Pat Murphy once again goes with the switch-hitting Anthony Seigler at the hot corner. When asked about the shakeup at third base Tuesday, Murphy told Adam McCalvy of MLB.com that the rigors of the long season have played a factor in his decision to hold the rookie out of the lineup more frequently of late, though the skipper didn't indicate that Durbin has fallen into a strict platoon with Seigler. Nonetheless, the lack of consistent starts against right-handed pitching of late has made it more difficult to count on Durbin to compile counting stats.

  • Brewers' Caleb Durbin: On bench for third straight game

Durbin is out of the lineup for Monday's game against Atlanta. The rookie will stay on the bench for the third straight game, but he appears to be fully healthy, as he played the final four innings of Sunday's 14-3 win over Washington while going 2-for-2 with a stolen base, two runs and an RBI. Though manager Pat Murphy hasn't shed much light on Durbin's recent string of absences from the lineup, the expectation is that the 25-year-old will see the lion's share of the starts at the hot corner moving forward. Anthony Seigler will replace Durbin in the lineup once again Monday, but Seigler hasn't helped his case for earning extended playing time by slashing .188/.250/.188 through his first 36 big-league plate appearances.

Durbin isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Nationals. Durbin will catch a breather Saturday after going 3-for-6 with two runs scored during Friday's high-scoring victory. Anthony Seigler will replace him at the hot corner and bat eighth.

  • Brewers' Caleb Durbin: Powers offense in win

Durbin went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an RBI double in Friday's 2-0 win over the Dodgers. Durbin was the Brewers' offense in this contest, turning in the only multi-hit effort for either team. He opened the scoring with the RBI double in the fifth inning, then added his solo shot for insurance in the seventh. The infielder has been steady in July, going 11-for-30 (.367) over 12 games. He's up to a .265/.350/.382 slash line with five homers, 34 RBI, 35 runs scored, 13 doubles and eight stolen bases over 276 plate appearances.

  • Brewers' Caleb Durbin: Sitting down Tuesday

Durbin isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Dodgers. Durbin has been turning things around at the plate over the past few weeks, but he'll get a chance to regroup after going 0-for-6 over his last two games. Andruw Monasterio will take over at the hot corner and bat eighth.

  • Brewers' Caleb Durbin: Causes mayhem on basepaths

Durbin went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases in Friday's 6-5 win over the Marlins. The rookie drove Miami pitchers to distraction, and Durbin's presence on second base caused Sandy Alcantara to balk him over to third in the third inning, leading directly to Milwaukee's first run of the night. Durbin continued a hot streak that has seen him slash .387/.451/.500 over his last 19 games with two homers, three steals, nine RBI and an impressive 17 runs despite the fact that he hasn't hit any higher than seventh in the order against right-handed pitching.

  • Brewers' Caleb Durbin: Idle for nightcap

Durbin is out of the lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Mets. Durbin didn't start in the Brewers' 7-2 win earlier the day either, though he drew a walk during his pinch-hit appearance. Anthony Seigler will make another start at the hot corner and bat seventh in the nightcap.

  • Brewers' Caleb Durbin: Sitting out first game of twin bill

Durbin is absent from the lineup for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Mets. Durbin will get some rest for the first game of the twin bill but should return to the lineup for the nightcap. Anthony Seigler will start at third base and bat ninth in his major-league debut in the early game.

  • Brewers' Caleb Durbin: Plays hero in three-RBI day

Durbin went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI in Wednesday's 6-5 extra-inning win over the Red Sox. The rookie infielder had multiple extra-base hits in the same game for the first time in his career, but it was Durbin's walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning that was the decisive blow. After a 4-for-45 (.089) slump to begin the month of May, Durbin seems to be finding his groove, going 11-for-36 (.306) over the last 10 games with five doubles, three steals, four runs and eight RBI.

  • Brewers' Caleb Durbin: Heads to bench

Durbin is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Guardians. This is Durbin's first day off since April 24. He is hitting .118 with a double, zero home runs, zero steals and a 2:2 K:BB in 11 games in May. Andruw Monasterio is starting at third base and batting eighth.
