Player Outlook
Jacob Young's speed and defense will keep him on a major league roster for the forseeable future, but his ability to start for a major league team will be limited by just how comfortable the club is carrying such an empty bat. Young flies on the bases, maybe even too much because he has been caught 21 times in his last 48 attempts. He has as many bunts for base hits (18) as he does double plays over the plast two seasons. However, his complete lack of power has likely put him into a Miles Straw-like role for the rebuilding Nationals who have younger players with more upside than what Young has shown in his big league career. Young could absolutely reclaim a starting role with the Nationals, but it is more likely that he gets worked in against tougher lefties or provides days off unless one of the younger and more talented outfielders in front of him falls into a massive slump. It is tough to slap a one-category label on a player who has been caught far to often using that one skill. There is also the factor of new manager Blake Butera, who may not be as aggressive with the running game as his predecessor Dave Martinez was leading the club.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Checks back into lineup

Young (wrist) will start in center field and bat second in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets. Young will make his first appearance since Feb. 27 after being held out of action for the past two and a half weeks while he waited for the discomfort in his bruised right wrist to subside. As long as the 26-year-old is able to avoid any setbacks while he picks up at-bats in multiple Grapefruit League and/or minor-league games during the final week of spring training, he should be in line to open the season as the Nationals' primary center fielder.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Resumes swinging bat

Young (wrist) resumed swinging a bat Tuesday, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. Young has been limited to only one Grapefruit League game this spring due to a lingering right wrist contusion. The Nationals are still viewing the outfielder as day-to-day and are focused on getting Young's wrist back to 100 percent before Opening Day. It's unclear when he might be given the green light to return to games.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Not hitting due to wrist issue

The Nationals announced Wednesday that Young hasn't been cleared for hitting while he tends to a right wrist contusion, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. Young has been managing the wrist issue since being hit by a pitch during batting practice Feb. 18, but he appeared to have moved past the injury after he made his Grapefruit League debut last Friday against the Astros. However, Young hasn't been included in any of the Nationals' spring lineups since then, with the bruised wrist apparently still presenting some complications. The Nationals are seemingly hopeful that Young will be ready to resume hitting after a few more days of rest, but any further setbacks or plateauing in the recovery process could put his availability in jeopardy for Opening Day.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Making spring debut Friday

Young (wrist) is starting in center field and batting second in Friday's Grapefruit League contest versus the Astros, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports. Young was held out of the first handful of Nationals spring training contests with right wrist soreness, but he's been cleared for game action. The speedster will see most or all of his playing time in center field for the Nationals this season, but he may need to improve on last year's .583 OPS to get regular starts.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Managing wrist soreness

Young is out of the lineup for Saturday's Grapefruit League game against Houston due to right wrist soreness, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. Young took a pitch off his wrist Wednesday, so he'll wait another day or two before making his spring debut. The 26-year-old posted just a .583 OPS across 364 plate appearances last season, but his elite speed and defense make him the early favorite to open the season as Washington's primary center fielder.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: On bench again

Young is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the White Sox. Young isn't part of the starting nine for a second straight game after making three consecutive starts in center field. Robert Hassell will patrol center field instead.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Exiting starting nine

Young is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus Atlanta. Young has been seeing more reps than Robert Hassell in center field lately, but he'll begin Wednesday's game on the bench. Hassell will patrol center field and bat eighth in the series finale.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Steals win with legs and glove

Young went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in Sunday's win over the Mets. The steal was his 15th of the season, but where Young really shined was on defense, as he made two incredible defensive plays in center field to rob New York hitters of extra bases, including a leaping catch at the wall in the ninth inning as the Nats clung to a 3-2 lead. He's split time in center with Robert Hassell down the stretch, and through 11 games in September, Young is batting .292 (7-for-24) with two steals, three runs and four RBI.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: On bench Sunday

Young is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs. Young made his return Saturday from a two-game absence due to back spasms and went 0-for-3 at the plate. He'll yield to Robert Hassell in center field Sunday for Washington's series finale. After serving as the everyday center fielder for most of June and July, Young and Hassell have been splitting work at the position over the last few weeks.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Pops grand slam in loss

Young went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in Monday's 10-5 loss to the Yankees. The Nationals outfielder finally tallied his first long ball in his 314th plate appearance of the season. Young took New York reliever Mark Leiter deep to right field in the ninth to shave his team's deficit to five runs. With Young stuck in a short-side platoon role, it is difficult to capitalize on his best quality for fantasy -- speed. Overall, the 26-year-old is slashing .231/.302/.282 with 29 runs scored and 24 RBI while going 13-for-23 on stolen base attempts.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Sitting Saturday

Young is not in the Nationals' starting lineup against the Brewers on Saturday. Young will be on the bench for the start of Saturday's game while Robert Hassell starts in center field and bats ninth. Young has gone hitless over his last seven games, which has lowered his slash line to .233/.302/.276 with 10 steals and 18 RBI over 263 plate appearances this season.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Returning to lineup Monday

Young (finger) will start in center field and bat ninth in Monday's game against the Astros. Young was held out of Sunday's 7-2 win while he tended to a bruised right index finger, but the day off was apparently all he needed to move past the issue. He'll take back his usual spot in center field as the Nationals open a three-game set in Houston.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Logs 10th steal

Young went 2-for-4 with a stolen base in Saturday's 6-5 loss to the Brewers. Young finished June strong but opened July by going 3-for-30 over his first nine games of the month. He got back on track with a multi-hit effort Saturday and added his 10th steal of the season during the ninth inning. The light-hitting outfielder has just a .589 OPS this season, adding 15 RBI, 22 runs scored and no home runs through 223 plate appearances.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Settling into short side of platoon

Young is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Mets. Since being activated from the 10-day injured list last Friday, Young has made all three of his starts against left-handed pitchers and has been on the bench all three times that the Nationals have faced righties. Manager Dave Martinez looks as though he'll deploy Young in the short side of a platoon in center field with Robert Hassell for the foreseeable future.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Activated Friday

The Nationals activated Young (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list Friday, Spencer Nusbaum of The Washington Post reports. Young has been on the shelf since May 23 due to a left shoulder AC joint sprain, but he's healthy enough to rejoin the active roster. Young had a brief rehab stint with Double-A Harrisburg, going 3-for-11 with two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base over three games. Daylen Lile was optioned to Triple-A Rochester in a corresponding move.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Starting rehab assignment

Young (shoulder) has been sent to Double-A Harrisburg to begin a rehab assignment, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports. Young has missed the last week-and-a-half with a left shoulder AC joint sprain but is ready to test things out in game action. He could be back with the Nationals in the next week or so.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Placed on 10-day injured list

The Nationals placed Young on the 10-day injured list Friday with a left shoulder AC joint sprain. Young initially suffered the injury when he collided with the outfield wall Saturday and was unable to make the necessary improvement to avoid a stint on the IL. He will be eligible for activation May 30, but it's the type of injury that could lead to longer than a minimum absence. Robert Hassell, Alex Call and Daylen Lile will help fill the void in the Nationals' outfield created by the absences of Young and Dylan Crews (oblique).

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Withheld from starting nine

Young (shoulder) was absent from the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles. The 25-year-old had X-rays come back negative on his left shoulder after a collision with the outfield wall Saturday, and he'll step out of the starting nine for at least one game. Dylan Crews is manning center field Sunday while Alex Call receives a start in right.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Exits with injury

Young was removed from Saturday's game against the Orioles with an apparent shoulder injury, Spencer Nusbaum of The Washington Post reports. Young collided hard with the center field wall while chasing down a flyball in the seventh inning. The Nationals' training staff seemed to be focusing on the outfielder's left shoulder, though it's still unclear if he suffered any structural damage. He'll be evaluated further, and Alex Call -- who entered as Saturday as his replacement -- could pick up time in the outfield if Young has to miss any amount of time.

  • Nationals' Jacob Young: Getting break Sunday

Young is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals. He'll head to the bench after starting each of the Nationals' last 12 games while slashing .220/.273/.268 with three stolen bases, seven runs and four RBI. With Young out of the lineup, the Nationals will deploy an outfield of James Wood, Dylan Crews and Alex Call from left to right.
