Tigers' Joseph Montalvo: Goes in Detroit in Chafin trade

The Tigers acquired Montalvo and Chase Lee from the Rangers on Tuesday in exchange for Andrew Chafin, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. Montalvo has collected a 2.44 ERA and 73:19 K:BB over 59 innings this season with High-A Hickory. The 22-year-old is a nice get as part of a package for a rental reliever.

As expected, the Tigers have declined their 2025 club option for Casey Mize. He will be paid a $10,000 buyout and remain under team control. Mize will make less as an arbitration player (about $2M) than he would have via the option ($3.1M), which is why the Tigers declined it.

The Tigers reinstated four players from the 60-day IL: Javier Baez, Alex Faedo, Sawyer Gipson-Long and Brendan White. Bligh Madris, Brayn Sammons and Ryan Vilade were waived to create space on the 40-man roster. They have cleared waivers and been outrighted.

The Tigers announce that they've traded RHP Devin Sweet to the Phillies for cash considerations. He was due to hit minor-league free agency tonight, so that presumably means the Phillies will be adding him to the 40-man roster.
