• White Sox's Noah Schultz: Clear of knee issue

  Schultz (knee) said Tuesday that he's completed his rehab for right knee tendinitis and is ready for the start of spring training, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. The left-hander, who is one of the White Sox's top prospects, was shut down in September due to right knee tendinitis, but it won't affect his availability for the start of 2026. Schultz spent most of the campaign at Double-A Birmingham and had a 3.06 ERA across 61.2 innings, but he struggled after being promoted to Triple-A Charlotte with a 9.37 ERA over five starts.

  Schultz (knee) is having a strong offseason and the team expects him to be fully healthy for the start of spring training, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. Schultz was shut down of for the remainder of the 2025 season due to right patellar tendinitis, but he's been progressing well so far this offseason. If all goes according to plan, he could finish up his rehab at some point over the next month or so. The 6-foot-10 southpaw had a disappointing 2025 campaign, logging a 13.8 percent walk rate and 1.67 WHIP in 73 innings across Double-A and Triple-A. Schultz is not on the 40-man roster and will likely head back to the upper minors to start 2026.

• White Sox's Noah Schultz: Set to avoid knee surgery

  White Sox director of player development Paul Janish said Monday that Schultz is dealing with right patellar tendinitis in his knee but will not require surgery, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. Schultz had already been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a knee problem that first cropped up in July. He wound up making only five starts for Triple-A Charlotte after being promoted to the affiliate in late June and posted a 9.37 ERA in those outings. Schultz is just 22 years old and has some of the highest upside of any pitching prospect in baseball, but he has yet to reach 90 innings in a season.

The White Sox were very careful with Schultz's workload in 2024, but he's been throwing live bullpen sessions earlier this season and will be challenged with taking on a bigger workload in 2025. Last year, Schultz never pitched beyond four innings, all the way through the Southern League postseason. However, this year those restraints are being taken off and he's moving into a true five-man rotation. With that in mind, Schultz focused on strength and conditioning this past offseason. He didn't add to his repertoire, instead focusing on throwing his cutter and four-seam fastball more to keep hitters guessing -- Schultz's slider is his best pitch. There's a chance Schultz creates a significant buzz this spring, which could set the stage for a big-league debut this summer.

  Schultz has a 0.61 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 34:13 K:BB in 29.2 innings across his last eight starts for Double-A Birmingham. Given that Schultz only allowed an earned run in two of those eight starts and didn't allow more than one earned run in any outing over that stretch, it's pretty clear that he can handle three or four innings against Double-A hitters. However, he hasn't recorded more than 12 outs in a start all year, as the White Sox have clearly capped his per-start workload in an effort to keep him healthy all season. Schultz's 70-grade slider is his bread and butter, so it's not a given that he'll have the same success as he attempts to log five or six innings in starts against better competition next season. Improving his third-pitch changeup will be the top priority for the 6-foot-9 southpaw this offseason.

• White Sox's Noah Schultz: Likely to debut Saturday

  White Sox pitching coordinator Matt Zaleski said Schultz (shoulder) is scheduled to pitch in his first game this spring Saturday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. Schultz will presumably pitch in a minor-league game rather than in the Cactus League, given that he has yet to make his debut in full-season ball. The White Sox have been proceeding cautiously with the 2022 first-round draft pick in spring training after he finished the 2023 season on the injured list at Single-A Kannapolis due to a left shoulder impingement. He also missed extensive time earlier last season due to a forearm strain, resulting in him logging just 27 total innings for Kannapolis. Zaleski noted that Schultz has been throwing in live batting practices up to this point in the spring and has sported a fastball that checks in at around 96-to-98 miles per hour, per Merkin. Though all seems well for Schultz on the health front and the expectation is that he'll open the season with Kannapolis or High-A Winston-Salem rather than sticking around at extended spring training, the White Sox plan to limit him to around 65 to 80 innings in 2024, according to Zaleski.

  Single-A Kannapolis placed Schultz on its 7-day injured list Sunday with a left shoulder impingement, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Though Schultz's diagnosis of a shoulder impingement rather than a shoulder strain amounts to positive news, the injury could still be enough to keep the 20-year-old on the shelf for the remainder of the 2023 campaign. Schultz had previously missed the first two months of the season with a forearm strain before he was cleared to make his professional debut June 2. In 10 starts with Kannapolis, Schultz has compiled a 1.33 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 38:6 K:BB in 27 innings.
