Xavier Isaac looks the part of a franchise first baseman in the making, and his track record of performance is very strong, but a late-season spike in strikeouts has increased his perceived volatility in dynasty leagues. Isaac slashed .310/.395/.579 with 12 home runs, 13 steals and a 27.6 percent strikeout rate in his first 54 games for High-A Bowling Green before missing two weeks with an undisclosed injury. After returning in late June, Isaac slashed .213/.339/.372 with seven home runs, three steals and a 41 percent strikeout rate over the final 53 games of his season, which included 31 games at Double-A after an early-August promotion. He made up for the lost time with a .957 OPS, three homers and a 40.3 percent strikeout rate in 15 Arizona Fall League games. He's a big guy (6-foot-3, 240 pounds), but Isaac happens to be 27-for-30 on stolen-base attempts in 209 games, so he could flirt with double-digit steals early in his big-league career. If Isaac's 2024 strikeout issues quickly start to look like an outlier, he'll surge back up prospect rankings, but if he looks like the same whiff-happy hitter early in 2025, he'll fall outside the top 50. We advise buying low, as Isaac still has a very high ceiling with youth and strong makeup on his side. He turns 21 this offseason and will return to Double-A to start the year.

  • Rays' Xavier Isaac: Could return in late April

    Isaac (elbow) is on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Montgomery and could be activated in late April as he builds up his throwing, Sam Dykstra of MLB Pipeline reports. He underwent a precautionary MRI on his left elbow back in February and was able to get into spring games in early March, but he aggravated the injury and missed the Spring Breakout game and looks like he'll end up missing about six weeks due to the injury if he avoids further setbacks. Isaac has a lot to prove after striking out at a 40.6 percent clip in his first exposure to Double-A pitching as a 20-year-old.

  • Rays' Xavier Isaac: Rejoins spring lineup

    Isaac (elbow) will start at designated hitter and bat seventh in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. He'll see his first spring game action since Feb. 21, after a sore left elbow had limited him in recent workouts. Though the elbow issue no longer seems to be affecting Isaac at the dish, it's unclear when he'll be able to complete his throwing program and resume playing first base and in the outfield. In any case, Isaac doesn't look like he'll require a season-opening stint on Double-A Montgomery's injured list since he'll be able to serve as a DH until he's fully healthy.

  • Rays' Xavier Isaac: Garners spring invite

    The Rays have extended Isaac an invitation to big-league camp during spring training, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Isaac slashed .264/.370/.480 with 18 home runs and 15 stolen bases over 102 games between High-A Bowling Green and Double-A Montgomery in 2024. The 21-year-old isn't a realistic candidate to make the Rays' Opening Day roster, but they hope he'll be a staple in their lineup eventually. Fellow top prospects Carson Williams and Tre' Morgan are among the Rays' other spring training invitees.

    Isaac (undisclosed) has started in two of High-A Bowling Green's last three games against Asheville, going 0-for-8 with a walk and an RBI. Before checking back into the lineup Thursday, Isaac hadn't played for Bowling Green since June 13 due to an unspecified issue. Despite his two-week absence, Isaac was never placed on Bowling Green's 7-day injured list. The first base prospect is slashing .298/.384/.556 with 12 home runs and 13 stolen bases across 237 plate appearances in the South Atlantic League this season.

Adam Sanford of DRays Bay looked at the video from Isaac's last game and said Isaac appeared fine during his most recent plate appearance and played two innings more in the field before a defensive replacement took his place. Isaac has not been placed on the injured list. He may have been on the cusp of earning a promotion to Double-A, as he was slashing .397/.480/.730 with four home runs, seven doubles and five steals in his most recent 63 at-bats.

    Isaac is slashing .296/.372/.522 with four home runs, three steals and a 26:14 K:BB in 29 games since June 1 for Single-A Charleston. The 6-foot-3 first baseman could end up with 80-grade raw power when it's all said and done, and his 18.2 percent strikeout rate and 15.4 percent walk rate at Single-A are encouraging marks. It's a small sample, but the lefty-hitting Isaac has a .648 OPS in 61 plate appearances against lefties and a .903 OPS in 192 plate appearances against righties. All seven of his home runs have come against opposite-handed pitching.

    Isaac slashed .289/.449/.605 with three home runs and five strikeouts in 12 May games for Single-A Charleston. The Rays selected Isaac out of high school with the 29th overall pick in last year's draft because of his bat. The 6-foot-3 lefty-hitting first baseman has 70-grade raw power, and the early returns on his hit tool are very encouraging. In May, he had a 10.2 percent strikeout rate and 20.4 percent walk rate, and his 1.25 BB/K is the fifth-best mark in the Carolina League. He missed two weeks in the middle of the month with an undisclosed injury and never landed on the injured list.
