Tigers' Brant Hurter: Picks up win Friday
Hurter (6-1) allowed one run on two hits across four innings of relief to earn the win Friday against the White Sox. He struck out one.
Hurter followed opener Brenan Hanifee, who completed two scoreless innings, and pitched well to record his sixth win through 10 appearances while punching Detroit's playoff ticket. Hurter has had a nice rookie campaign, posting a stellar 2.58 ERA and 0.88 WHIP across 45.1 innings, often working in bulk relief. It remains to be seen how the Tigers structure their pitching staff for the postseason, but the 26-year-old has likely earned a prominent role based on his strong performance.

Hurter was stellar again in a bulk role Friday, holding the Orioles without a hit while logging a career-high eight punchouts. The rookie left-hander has wins in five consecutive appearances, allowing just six runs over 24.1 innings in that span. Tigers' Brant Hurter: Gets win in long relief
Hurter (4-1) got the win in Saturday's 2-1 victory over Oakland. He allowed one run on four hits and a walk while striking out three over 5.1 innings.
Brenan Hanifee took the ball as the opener and faced the first three hitters before Hurter came on and took the game through the sixth inning. Hurter has one start in his first seven career appearances, but he's still managed to pick up wins in each of his last four games. The rookie left-hander has now pitched at least five innings in five of his seven appearances. Hurter has yet to allow more than three runs in any game and has a 3.00 ERA through 33 innings this season.

Tigers' Brant Hurter: Stymies Red Sox for third win
Hurter (3-1) earned the win Sunday, allowing one run on six hits in five innings against the Tigers. He struck out five.
Hurter was moved back into a bulk-relief role after making his first career start last time out, coming just a two-out Jarren Duran RBI single in the fifth inning away from holding the Red Sox off the board. It was the fourth time in six appearances this season that Hurter has tossed at least five innings, with Sunday's performance representing the first time he's allowed as few as one run during those appearances. Hurter lowered his ERA to 3.25 with a 0.94 WHIP and 26 strikeouts over 27.2 innings. Either as a starter or in a bulk-relief role, Hurter figures to make his next appearance when the Tigers travel to Oakland to take on the A's.

Tigers' Brant Hurter: Wins first major-league start
Hurter (2-1) earned the win against the Angels on Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts over five innings.

The rookie has now allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of his five appearances with the Tigers while completing five or more innings in three of them. On the season, he owns a 3.57 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 21:3 K:BB across 22.1 innings and lines up to face the Padres early next week.

Tigers' Brant Hurter: Getting starting nod Tuesday
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said that Hurter will start Tuesday's game against the Angels in Detroit, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Hurter had been making regular turns through the Detroit rotation since his Aug. 4 call-up from Triple-A Toledo, but Hinch had deployed the left-hander as a bulk reliever behind an opener on each of his first four big-league appearances. The 25-year-old rookie has fared well in that capacity, ringing up a 3.57 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 17:1 K:BB, and the Tigers now appear motivated to see if he can maintain that form while operating in a traditional starting role. A banged-up Tigers pitching staff will get some reinforcements in the rotation this week with the promotion of prospect Ty Madden from Triple-A and with Casey Mize's (hamstring) expected return from the 60-day injured list, but Hurter should have a case for sticking around in a starting role the rest of the season if he continues to impress Tuesday.

Tigers' Brant Hurter: Snags win as bulk reliever
Hurter (1-1) allowed two runs on three hits and struck out four without walking a batter over 3.2 innings to earn the win over the Cubs on Wednesday.
Hurter once again filled a bulk-relief role. He entered the game to begin the third inning with the Tigers already ahead 4-0, and while he allowed a two-run home run to Christian Bethancourt, Hurter was able to come away with his first major-league win. He has a 3.57 ERA through 17.2 innings over his first four appearances, but Hurter's strong control (0.79 WHIP, 17:1 K:BB) makes for an encouraging first impression, and while he's not posting particularly long outings, his role as a bulk reliever gives him a better chance of earning wins if he gets enough run support.

Tigers' Brant Hurter: Strikes out five as bulk reliever
Hurter covered six innings out of the bullpen in Friday's 3-0 loss to the Yankees, giving up two earned runs on four hits and no walks while striking out five. He didn't factor into the decision.
Hurter has yet to make a start for the Tigers, as he's been deployed in bulk relief in each of his three appearances for the big club while covering three, five and six innings in those outings. Even though Hurter is a de facto member of the rotation at the moment, it's unclear if the Tigers plan to use him as a traditional starter at any point. He's pitched well in his limited opportunities thus far with a 3.21 ERA and 0.79 WHIP over 14 innings, but he's still looking for his first MLB win.

Tigers' Brant Hurter: Takes loss in bulk relief
Hurter (0-1) was the pitcher of record Saturday in the Tigers' 3-1 loss to the Guardians, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk with five strikeouts over five innings.
Hurter followed opener Alex Faedo and was burned by a three-run fifth frame. The rookie has served as a bulk reliever in both of his first two major-league appearances and has posted a solid 8:1 K:BB in eight innings. He increased his pitch count from 36 to 76 on Saturday and should remain in the mix for work as a starter or bulk reliever moving forward.

Tigers' Brant Hurter: Called up ahead of MLB debut
The Tigers selected Hurter's contract from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday.
Alex Faedo will draw the start for the Tigers in Sunday's series finale versus the Royals, but he's likely to work only an inning or two before giving way to Hurter, who is expected to operate as a bulk reliever. A 25-year-old lefty, Hurter will be making his MLB debut Sunday after logging a 5.80 ERA and 1.48 WHIP across 71.2 innings over 19 appearances (18 starts) for Toledo. With the Detroit rotation having been decimated by injuries in addition to Jack Flaherty being sent to the Dodgers at the trade deadline, Hurter should have the opportunity to make additional starts or bulk-relief appearances if he shows well in his debut Sunday.

Tigers' Brant Hurter: Promotion imminent
The Tigers will select Hurter's contract from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Hurter is scheduled to pitch Sunday against the Royals, but manager A.J. Hinch said that Hurter will be working behind an opener. The trade deadline left Detroit with just two starters in its rotation, so it's possible Hurter could stick around in the majors if he performs well Sunday. The 25-year-old southpaw has put up a 5.80 ERA and 1.48 WHIP through 71.1 innings in Triple-A this season.

Tigers' Brant Hurter: Could be factor this year
Hurter could force his way into the MLB bullpen conversation if he impresses during camp, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Hurter played at three minor-league levels in 2023, topping out at Double-A, where he posted a 10.1 K/9. The lefty has had a K/9 of 10.0 or higher at all four levels he's appeared at over the past two seasons, and he's shown an ability to consistently retire left-handed hitters. Hurter is unlikely to skip Triple-A entirely, but if he looks good in camp and in the early going during the regular season, he may be able to go through the level quickly and make his MLB debut at some point this summer.
