Roman Anthony is not the consensus No. 1 overall prospect, but his credentials stack up with any prospect in the minors and he should make his big-league debut early this season. He won't turn 21 until May, but Anthony already cuts an imposing figure at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds. After playing 10 games at Double-A to close 2023, Anthony returned there and got off to a slow start, but he seemed to improve with each passing month, culminating with a dominant 35-game run at Triple-A to close the year. All told, Anthony slashed .291/.396/.498 with 18 home runs, 21 steals, an excellent 34.6 hard-hit rate and a passable 23.7 percent strikeout rate in 119 games. His walk rate jumped from 12.8 percent to 18.9 percent after the jump to Triple-A, while his strikeout rate improved from 25.5 percent to 18.9 percent, so his improving contact skill and swing decisions allow for a wide range of outcomes as a rookie. In Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu and Masataka Yoshida, it seems Boston has four players for the three outfield spots and designated hitter, so an offseason trade would be needed for Anthony to have an obvious spot in the Opening Day lineup. Long term, Anthony could profile similarly to the MVP version of Christian Yelich if he reaches his ceiling.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Homers in Breakout game

Anthony batted leadoff and went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Thursday's Spring Breakout game against Rays prospects. Anthony had been on the shelf for a week-and-a-half due to an illness but returned to Grapefruit League action on Wednesday. The 20-year-old announced his presence Thursday as one of three top Boston prospects to go deep -- Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell also homered. With Wilyer Abreu (illness) looking like he won't be ready for Opening Day, Anthony has a real chance to start the regular season on the major-league roster.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Back in spring lineup

Anthony (illness) will start in left field and bat seventh in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. Anthony will make his return to the spring lineup for the first time since March 2, after a bout with an illness kept him out for more than a week while also resulting in him losing about 10 pounds. The 20-year-old outfield prospect might have been facing an uphill battle to make the Opening Day roster had he stayed healthy throughout the spring, and the missed time due to the illness makes it even more likely that he'll begin the season at Triple-A Worcester. Anthony shouldn't need much more time in the minors before making his MLB debut, as he slashed a blistering .344/.463/.519 with a 19.1 percent walk rate and 19.5 percent strikeout rate in 164 plate appearances for Worcester after getting a promotion from Double-A Portland last August.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Likely to begin season at Triple-A

Anthony (illness) is likely to begin the season at Triple-A Worcester, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. The Red Sox are expected to have an opening in right field with Wilyer Abreu slated to miss at least the first week or so of the season with a gastrointestinal issue. However, Anthony is coming back from an illness of his own, one which resulted in him losing about 10 pounds. The top prospect has resumed workouts, but it's not clear when he'll be ready to return to game action. Anthony has a good chance to become a regular for the Red Sox at some point this season, but it appears highly likely that will come down the line during the 2025 campaign.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Resuming workouts Saturday

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Friday that he expects Anthony (illness) to resume workouts Saturday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Anthony hasn't played in a Grapefruit League game since March 2, as he's one of a handful of Red Sox players to come down with the flu. He appears to be on the mend, but it could be a few more days before he's back in game action. Anthony is a candidate to play right field for Boston with Wilyer Abreu (illness) expected to begin the season on the injured list, but the top prospect will need to get back up to speed himself first.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Starting Saturday's exhibition

Anthony (elbow) will start in left field and bat second in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays. Anthony was scratched ahead of Friday's game against Northeastern University, but the move was said to be precautionary and his presence in the lineup a day later would seem to confirm that it was a minor issue. Widely considered one of the top prospects in the organization and in all of baseball, Anthony reached Triple-A last season at the age of 20. He will have a fighting chance to make the Opening Day roster out of spring training.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Scratched due to sore elbow

Anthony was scratched from the lineup for Friday's exhibition game against Northeastern University due to a sore right elbow after he was hit by a pitch Thursday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. The move looks to be precautionary, and Anthony should be ready to return to action in a day or two. The top prospect is attempting to win a spot on Boston's Opening Day roster, and a brief absence early in the spring shouldn't impact his chances.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Scratched Friday

Anthony was scratched from the lineup for Friday's exhibition game against Northeastern University for undisclosed reasons, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Anthony was originally penciled in to start in left field and bat leadoff but will instead sit out Boston's first spring contest. It's not yet clear if the 20-year-old is dealing with an injury or illness, but any prolonged absence would hurt his chances of winning an Opening Day roster spot.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Invited to spring training

The Red Sox have extended Anthony an invitation to big-league camp during spring training, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. He'll be joined by fellow top prospects Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer. Anthony won't turn 21 until May but looks close to major-league ready after slashing .291/.396/.498 with 18 homers and 21 stolen bases between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester in 2024. Boston's outfield is already crowded, which makes an Opening Day roster spot for Anthony unlikely, but he could force the issue sooner rather than later.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Shows off power in skills contest

Anthony won the Futures Skills Showcase in Arlington (Tex.) on Saturday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. The inaugural skills showcase was a three-round competition designed to highlight bat control and power. Anthony was last after two rounds -- the first a bunting competition followed by hitting to specific thirds of the outfield. It was during the final round, the home run part of the showcase, when Anthony showed off. He homered on six of his eight swings, including four going the opposite way (which meant more points). Anthony is slashing .241/.349/.441 with 15 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, 27 RBI, eight steals and 38 runs over 66 games for Double-A Portland.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Returns from elbow issue

Anthony went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run Sunday in Double-A Portland's 10-5 win over Reading. Per Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, Anthony was back in the lineup Sunday after missing Portland's previous three games while recovering from an elbow injury that stemmed from being hit by a pitch Wednesday. The 20-year-old outfielder had returned from a rib injury earlier this month and is now slashing a robust .414/.485/.931 through his first eight games of June.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Rolling at Double-A Portland

Anthony went 3-for-7 with a walk, a double, two home runs and two additional runs scored across both ends of Saturday's doubleheader for Double-A Portland. The 19-year-old prospect was introduced to Double-A late last season, slashing .343/.477/.543 over 44 plate appearances, and made efforts during the offseason to improve himself. Anthony worked on his body, adding 20 pounds to make a bigger impact this season, per Ben Weinrib of MLB.com. "Now that I've had that experience and had an offseason to work and put some size on and get stronger, I feel like at whatever level I'm at ... just that feeling of knowing that I belong and can hang with this type of competition," Anthony said. He's slashing .333/.385/.708 with five extra-base hits, four RBI and six runs through the season's first six games.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Promoted to Double-A

Anthony has been promoted by the Red Sox from High-A Greenville to Double-A Portland, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Anthony has been one of the biggest risers among prospects this season and has now reached the Double-A level in his first full season at just 19 years of age. The left-handed hitting outfielder has collected a .265/.396/.459 batting line with 13 home runs, 13 stolen bases and a 113:78 K:BB over 96 games between Low-A Salem and Greenville in 2023.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Pushed aggressively

Anthony is hitting .320 with two home runs and an 8:4 K:BB in six games since getting promoted to High-A Greenville. The toolsy outfielder slashed .228/.376/.316 with one home run and 11 steals in 42 games with Single-A Salem, although his .285 BABIP supressed his numbers. On the flip side, he is playing a bit over his head thus far with the Drive (.400 BABIP), but Anthony has showcased a strong command of the strike zone to go with projectable power and above-average speed in his full-season debut. He turned 19 in May, so he is one of the youngest hitters at High-A.
