Houston will eventually go to a six-man rotation, and Arrighetti could fill that slot when that happens, per manager Joe Espada. For now, though, the righty will hone his craft in the minors. Arrighetti was limited to only seven starts last season due to injuries and posted a 6.75 ERA and 12:5 K:BB over eight innings this spring.

  Arrighetti allowed four runs on three hits and a walk across two innings in Friday's Grapefruit League matchup with Washington. He struck out four. Arrighetti's spring debut started well, as he struck out a pair of Nationals in a scoreless second inning. However, it was a different story in the third, as the right-hander would give up four runs while recording only two outs, punctuated by a Luis Garcia three-run homer. The 26-year-old Arrighetti had an up-and-down 2025, largely due to injuries. After making Houston's Opening Day rotation, he posted a 5.35 ERA with 31 strikeouts across just seven starts (35.1 innings), missing four months with a fractured thumb as well as the final month with an elbow ailment. The acquisitions of Tatsuya Imai, Mike Burrows and Ryan Weiss have complicated Arrighetti's path to a rotation spot, and he's competing with Weiss, AJ Blubaugh and Lance McCullers for one of the Astros' final two starting jobs.

  Arrighetti (1-2) took the loss Wednesday against the Marlins, allowing five runs on 11 hits and one walk in 3.2 innings. He struck out five. Arrighetti showed plenty of rust and a lack of command on his pitch locations in his first major-league start since April 5 in Minnesota, surrendering a career-high 11 hits Wednesday in his first game back from a thumb fracture. The 25-year-old right-hander did produce 16 whiffs during his abbreviated outing, which was perhaps an encouraging takeaway, but he may have been a bit too aggressive in attacking the strike zone overall. Arrighetti has a rough 7.43 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 13:6 K:BB over his first 12.2 innings this year, so he'll try to right the ship during a scheduled home tilt versus the Red Sox his next time out.

Arrighetti is finally ready to rejoin the Houston rotation after he had been on the shelf since April 8 due to a right thumb fracture, which he sustained when he was struck by a flyball during batting practice. The right-hander kicked off a rehab assignment July 19, and over his three outings between Double-A Corpus Christi and Triple-A Sugar Land, Arrighetti turned in a 5.73 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 11:5 K:BB in 11 innings. He got stretched out to 4.2 innings and 79 pitches in his final rehab outing with Sugar Land this past Thursday, so Arrighetti is unlikely to face any major workload restrictions in his return to the Astros.
