  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Trying out first base

The Tigers have asked Malloy to get work at first base during the spring, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Malloy played strictly in the outfield during the 2024 campaign, but Detroit has its sights set on increasing flexibility throughout the roster heading into 2025. Colt Keith will also see time at first base during the spring, which would increase the number of infield combinations available for the club if this idea pans out.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Back in big leagues

The Tigers recalled Malloy from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. The 24-year-old will rejoin the MLB club for the start of September as rosters expand to 28 players. Malloy has a .698 OPS with eight home runs in 57 big-league games this season and should see semi-regular playing time in the outfield and at designated hitter.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Sent back to Toledo

Malloy was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday. Malloy hasn't hit particularly well in his first taste of the majors, as he's maintained only a .217 average with a 36.3 percent strikeout rate in 204 plate appearances. He's also lost playing time due to the return of Kerry Carpenter, so the Tigers will opt for Malloy to continue his development in the minor leagues for the time being.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Late lineup addition

Malloy is starting in left field and batting seventh Wednesday against the Tigers. The 24-year-old was initally absent from the starting nine Wednesday, but he'll end up receiving a start since Javier Baez (undisclosed) was scratched. Malloy has a .642 OPS through 10 games in August, and he could see a diminished role going forward with Kerry Carpenter back from the injured list.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Out of lineup again Wednesday

Malloy is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mariners, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Malloy has now sat out both contests since Kerry Carpenter was reinstated from the injured list Tuesday. Carpenter has served as the Tigers' designated hitter both times, so Malloy could see his playing time tick back up if Detroit elects to deploy Carpenter in right field more frequently down the road.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Absent from starting nine

Malloy is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mariners. Malloy will hit the bench in Kerry Carpenter's first game back from the injured list, as Carpenter slots into the DH spot and Zach McKinstry, Parker Meadows and Matt Vierling fill the outfield. While Carpenter is expected to eventually play right field every day, the Tigers could ease him into action by frequently deploying him at DH, which would eat into Malloy's role.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Getting Wednesday off

Malloy isn't in the Tigers' lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mariners, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. After going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts during Tuesday's series opener, Malloy will get a day to rest Wednesday. His absence will move Colt Keith into the DH role while Zach McKinstry starts at second base and bats seventh.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Provides offense Friday

Malloy went 2-for-2 with two walks and a two-run home run in Friday's 9-2 loss to the Royals. Malloy provided all of his team's offense with his eighth home run of the season in the first inning. The rookie has shown good power potential through 45 games, but he's also unsurprisingly striking out 33.5 percent of the time. Malloy will have to make a bit more consistent contact if he wants to take the next step as a player. Thankfully for the 24-year-old, the rebuilding Tigers should give him plenty of opportunities to work through things at the plate.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Not starting Sunday

Malloy is absent from the Tigers' starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Twins, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Malloy will take a seat Sunday after going 1-for-9 with five strikeouts over the first two games of the series. Mark Canha will serve as the designated hitter and bat in the cleanup spot against Twins right-hander Bailey Ober.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Enters lineup Saturday

Malloy will serve as Detroit's designated hitter and No. 2 batter in Saturday's game against the Blue Jays. Malloy didn't appear in Friday's 5-4 win while the Blue Jays brought righty Chris Bassitt to the mound, but the rookie will crack the lineup Saturday versus southpaw Yusei Kikuchi. Malloy has shown decent pop in a part-time role, hitting five home runs across 33 games, though he's batting just .219 and has struck out in 34.5 percent of his plate appearances. He'll need to be a bit more consistent if he wants to earn more playing time against righties.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Getting break Sunday

Malloy is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers. Malloy will get a breather in the Tigers' final game before the All-Star break after he had started in each of the team's last five contests while going 5-for-18 with a home run, a triple, two walks, three runs and two RBI. Riley Greene will get a day out of the outfield and will serve as Detroit's designated hitter while Malloy takes a seat.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Homers in return to lineup

Malloy went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 9-8, 10-inning loss to the Guardians. Malloy had been out of the lineup the last two days, but he returned with a bang Tuesday, popping his fifth home run of the season across 28 games. While the power has been nice, the rookie is batting just .195 with a 35 percent strikeout rate. Malloy is taking his lumps, and he may not see consistent playing time as a result.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Sitting in second straight

Malloy is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Guardians. Malloy will take a seat for the second day in a row against a right-handed pitcher (Gavin Williams) while the Tigers roll with Mark Canha as their designated hitter. Though his usage of late hasn't been encouraging, Malloy has performed passably since getting the call to the big leagues June 3. Through his first 27 MLB games, Malloy is hitting just .195 with a 36 percent strikeout rate, though he's provided some pop (four home runs, two doubles) and is walking in 10.1 percent of his plate appearances. He'll likely see his playing time dip when the Tigers are at full strength, but unless his production drops further, Malloy should at least have a semi-regular spot in the lineup until Detroit gets Kerry Carpenter (back) and/or Parker Meadows (hamstring) back from the injured list.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Swipes bag in big win

Malloy went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Wednesday's 9-2 win over the Twins. Malloy singled in the third for his only hit of the game and swiped second base for the first steal of his MLB career. Malloy does have a hit in four straight games now, but overall, it's been a struggle for the 24-year-old to get acclimated to big-league pitching so far. He's slashing .197/.284/.394 with four homers, eight RBI, eight runs and a 7:31 BB:K in 81 plate appearances.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Goes deep again Tuesday

Malloy went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Twins. Malloy is starting to settle in at the MLB level, as he blasted his fourth career home run and second in as many games. The rookie was batting .158 through his first 13 contests, but he's upped that to a more respectable .241 over his last 11 games. There's still room for improvement, though if Malloy can continue to display good power, fantasy managers will deal with a lower batting average.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Not starting Friday

Malloy is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Angels. Malloy will begin Friday's contest in the dugout after going 0-for-3 with one strikeout in Thursday's 5-0 loss. Over his last 10 games, he's gone just 2-for-25 with a 40.7 percent strikeout rate. Colt Keith will serve as the designated hitter Friday while Andy Ibanez starts at second base against Angels right-hander Zach Plesac.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Sitting Sunday

Malloy is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against the White Sox. Malloy will take a breather Sunday after starting in the first two games of the series, going 1-for-6 with a double and one run scored. Riley Greene will serve as the designated hitter Sunday while Akil Baddoo starts in left field against White Sox right-hander Jonathan Cannon.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Exiting starting nine Wednesday

Malloy is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Malloy will take a seat for the series finale after he started the first two games in Atlanta while going 0-for-6 with a walk and four strikeouts. Mark Canha played first base in Tuesday's game but will serve as the Tigers' designated hitter Wednesday while Malloy hits the bench.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Records first MLB home run

Malloy went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 9-1 loss to the Rangers. While it was an ugly night for the Tigers, it was a great night for Malloy. The rookie delivered his first MLB hit in the top of the sixth inning, and it also happened to be his first MLB home run. Malloy added a single a few innings later for good measure. The 24-year-old is a promising prospect with some power upside, and he figures to see regular playing time at least for the foreseeable future, giving him an opportunity to show what he can do.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Added to roster, in lineup Monday

The Tigers selected Malloy's contract from Triple-A Toledo on Monday. He'll start at designated hitter and will bat sixth Monday against the Rangers in his MLB debut. The 24-year-old has slashed .253/.410/.473 with six home runs and three stolen bases over 195 plate appearances this season with Toledo. Malloy has made a full-time move to the outfield in 2024 after previously spending some time at the infield corners. The right-handed batter should receive at least semi-regular starts between the corner outfield and DH.
