Cardinals' Victor Scott: Officially optioned back to minors

The Cardinals optioned Scott to Triple-A Memphis on Monday.
Scott remains an elite defensive center fielder, but his bat has become untenable, as he's slashing just .194/.276/.258 across 61 games this season. Nathan Church (shoulder) will be activated from the 10-day injured list to grab Scott's roster spot and is also the favorite to see the bulk of the playing time in center field.

The Cardinals are expected to option Scott to Triple-A Memphis prior to their next game Tuesday in New York, Tamar Sher of First Alert 4 St. Louis reports.
Scott has served as the Cardinals' primary center fielder throughout the season but has been one of the majors' worst-performing hitters. Even after drawing a pair of walks while collecting his ninth stolen base of the season in Sunday's 5-3 win over the Reds, Scott has turned in a measly .532 OPS, which places him 189th of the 191 hitters who have received at least 180 plate appearances. Scott will now be given a chance to hit the reset button with Memphis, where he'll be able to play on an everyday basis in a lower-pressure environment. Expect St. Louis to announce a corresponding move prior to Tuesday's series opener versus the Mets.
Scott is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs.
The Cardinals will give Scott a breather for the series finale after the speedster had been included in the starting nine in each of the past 15 games. Jose Fermin will get the nod in center field in place of Scott, who should continue to see the bulk of the starts at the position while Nathan Church (shoulder) is on the injured list.

The 25-year-old reworked his swing during the offseason and entered spring training looking to bunt for base hits more often, but he's racked up just five total bases through 13 Grapefruit League games. Scott will provide strong defense in center field, but his bat will likely need to come to life at some point in 2026 to retain the starting job. He played in 138 games last year and posted a .216/.305/.296 slash line with five homers and 34 steals.

Scott retooled his swing during the offseason after a motion-capture study, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
The specific changes Scott made aren't clear, but the speedy outfielder is also focused this spring on bunting for base hits. Scott was a Gold Glove finalist in 2025 in his first full major-league season for his fine defensive work in center field, but he slashed only .216/.305/.296 with five home runs. The 25-year-old did steal 34 bases in 38 attempts, and if he is a factor in fantasy leagues in 2026, it will likely be due to the threat he poses on the basepaths.
