Kazuhisa Makita: Returning to Japan
Makita signed a contract with the Rakuten Golden Eagles of Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan on Tuesday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Makita signed a two-year, $4 million deal with the Padres in January 2018, but he had a 5.40 ERA over 35 innings during his debut campaign and was designated for assignment after the season. The 35-year-old spent most of the 2019 season at Double-A Amarillo, but he also appeared in eight games for Triple-A El Paso.

Makita has pitched exclusively for Amarillo this season. He's recorded a respectable 3.82 ERA in 37.2 innings, but there wasn't much interest on the waiver wire in a 34-year-old with merely good numbers at the Double-A level.

Makita was recalled from Triple-A El Paso on Sunday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic San Diego reports.
Makita wasn't good during his time with the Padres earlier in the season, allowing a 6.55 ERA in 22 innings. His 23.7 percent strikeout rate and 7.5 percent walk rate were each perfectly adequate, but he allowed the lowest groundball rate (16.1 percent) among pitchers who had thrown at least 20 innings. His 80 mph fastball simply wasn't cutting it, but he'll get another chance to prove he can get big-league hitters out. Phil Maton was optioned in a corresponding move.
