  • Giants' Ljay Newsome: Signs MiLB deal with Giants

Newsome signed a minor-league contract with the Giants on Dec. 10. Newsome spent most of the 2022 campaign recovering from Tommy John surgery that he underwent in the summer of 2021, but he made 11 appearances (two starts) in the minors and posted a 4.38 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 12.1 innings. He made 12 appearances (five starts) with the Mariners between the 2020 and 2021 campaigns, and it's possible that he'll be invited to major-league spring training in 2023.

  • Cardinals' Ljay Newsome: Activated from Triple-A IL

Triple-A Memphis reinstated Newsome (elbow) from its 60-day injured list Monday. Newsome, who has been on the shelf all season while recovering from the Tommy John surgery he required last summer, is ready to rejoin the Cardinals' top affiliate after he recently wrapped up a six-appearance rehab assignment in the lower rungs of the minors. Between stops in the rookie-level Florida Complex League and with Single-A Palm Beach, Newsome struck out seven and allowed two runs on eight hits and one walk over 6.1 innings.

  • Cardinals' Ljay Newsome: Set to start rehab assignment

Newsome (elbow) will report to the Cardinals' Florida Complex League affiliate to begin a rehab assignment this weekend. Newsome will take the next step in the lengthy recovery from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent last summer. The right-hander is likely to need multiple weeks at various levels of the Cardinals' minor-league system before he could potentially be activated from the injured list at Triple-A Memphis. It's possible he'll be given the all-clear before the end of the season, which wasn't expected earlier in the year. Newsome last pitched in the majors with the Mariners in 2021, logging a 7.98 ERA and 1.57 WHIP across 14.2 innings.

  • Cardinals' Ljay Newsome: Outrighted to Triple-A

Newsome (elbow) was outrighted to Triple-A Memphis on Thursday. Newsome made seven appearances (one start) with the Mariners in 2021 before being claimed off waivers by the Cardinals in October. • Cardinals' Ljay Newsome: Claimed by Cardinals

Newsome (elbow) was claimed off waivers by the Cardinals on Friday. Newsome was outrighted off the Mariners' 40-man roster and will now join a new team heading into the offseason. The 26-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery over the summer and is poised to spend most, if not all, of the 2022 campaign on the Cardinals' injured list.

  • Mariners' Ljay Newsome: On mend from Tommy John surgery

Newsome (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery earlier this summer, MLB.com reports. Scott Hanson of The Seattle Times relayed back in May that Tommy John surgery was a possibility for the right-hander after he was initially placed on the IL with elbow inflammation, and the 24-year-old appears to have in fact had the procedure at some point over the past few months. Newsome's rehab from surgery will likely extend through the 2022 season, though he should be at or near full strength for the start of spring training in 2023.

  • Mariners' Ljay Newsome: Transferred to 60-day IL

Newsome (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Thursday. Newsome's placement on the 60-day IL doesn't come as a significant surprise since manager Scott Servais said Wednesday that the right-hander could require Tommy John surgery. Even if he doesn't need surgery, Newsome will be sidelined until after the All-Star break. Right-hander Logan Gilbert's contract was selected by the Mariners as part of a corresponding move.

  • Mariners' Ljay Newsome: Tommy John possible

Newsome (elbow) might end up needing Tommy John UCL replacement surgery, Scott Hanson of The Seattle Times reports. "There might be some other ways to go ... and he has not made a decision," manager Scott Servais said. "Like anybody would be, he was bummed out. ... He has never had an arm injury (before)." The takeaway from this injury other than Newsome's extended absence is that Logan Gilbert's promotion from Triple-A could be for good, rather than just temporary.

  • Mariners' Ljay Newsome: Heads to IL

The Mariners placed Newsome (elbow) on the 10-day injured list Sunday. Newsome, who experienced right elbow inflammation during his most recent outing Saturday against the Rangers, becomes the fourth Mariners starter to head to the IL, joining James Paxton (elbow), Marco Gonzales (forearm) and Nick Margevicius (shoulder). Due to the mounting list of injuries, Seattle could consider shortening its six-man rotation to five until one of Gonzales, Margevicius or Newsome is healthy again. Newsome, who gave up 11 runs while working only four innings across his three starts, will undergo an MRI on Monday, as the Mariners look to gain more information regarding the severity of his injury, according to Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle.

  • Mariners' Ljay Newsome: Battling elbow inflammation

Newsome was removed from Saturday's game against the Rangers with inflammation in his right elbow, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. The 24-year-old followed opener Erik Swanson and threw only 28 pitches before exiting the contest. The severity of the injury remains unclear, but it wouldn't be surprising to see Newsome end up on the injured list.

  • Mariners' Ljay Newsome: Exits with injury

Newsome was removed from Saturday's game against the Rangers with an apparent injury, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. The 24-year-old followed opener Erik Swanson and surrendered three runs on four hits over one inning before leaving with what appeared to be a forearm issue. Newsome should be considered day-to-day until the Mariners update his status.

  • Mariners' Ljay Newsome: Shelled in first start

Newsome (1-1) was tagged with the loss Saturday against the Angels, completing two innings and allowing eight runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out one. Newsome entered the contest having yielded only two earned runs over 10.2 relief innings, but he didn't come close to that level of success in his first start. The right-hander was torched by three homers -- including two off the bat of Jared Walsh -- in his two innings of work and needed 52 pitches to retire six batters. The poor outing shot Newsome's ERA all the way up to 7.11 on the season. Given the disastrous results in his first attempt at starting, there's no guarantee that Newsome will stick in the rotation moving forward.

  • Mariners' Ljay Newsome: Slated to start Saturday

Newsome will start Saturday's game against the Angels, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports. With Nick Margevicius (shoulder) on the injured list, Newsome will step into the rotation and make his first start of the year at home Saturday. The right-hander has posted a 1.69 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in 10.2 innings across his first four appearances of the season.

  • Mariners' Ljay Newsome: Likely to join rotation

Newsome will likely join the starting rotation while Nick Margevicius (shoulder) is sidelined, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Newsome replaced Margevicius in Sunday's loss to Boston and allowed two hits and no walks while striking out four in four scoreless innings. Since Margevicius has now been placed on the 10-day injured list, manager Scott Servais said that Newsome will likely take his place in the rotation. If Newsome is ultimately confirmed as a starter, he lines up to make his first start of the season at home against the Angels on Saturday.

The 24-year-old right-hander has put together an impressive 7:1 K:BB, 2.70 ERA and 1.20 WHIP across 6.2 frames over that span.

  • Mariners' Ljay Newsome: Records first career win

Newsome (1-0) pitched two hitless innings while striking out one to earn the win over the Astros on Sunday. Newsome relieved an injured Nick Margevicius (arm fatigue) in the fifth inning. In his second appearance of the season, Newsome held the Astros in check once the Mariners took the lead in the fifth inning to secure his first career win. • Mariners' Ljay Newsome: Optioned to alternate training site

Newsome was optioned to the alternate training site Friday. Newsome pitched well in four appearances (three starts) this spring, as he posted a 2.79 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 9.2 innings. While the right-hander could return to the majors at some point in 2021, he'll report to alternate camp ahead of the regular season.

  • Mariners' Ljay Newsome: Solid through first three starts

Newsome has a 1-1 record, 3.12 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 7:2 K:BB across 8.2 innings through his first three Cactus League starts. The right-hander took the loss against the Diamondbacks on Monday despite performing well, allowing an earned run on two hits and a walk while recording three strikeouts over 3.2 innings. Newsome had some struggles in his first taste of the big leagues last season (5.17 ERA, 1.34 WHIP across 15.2 innings), but he's catching the eye of his boss with every solid spring performance. "Newsome really threw the ball well," manager Scott Servais said. "He's really improved. I tip my hat to him. He went into the offseason and tightened up his breaking ball and secondary pitches."

  • Mariners' Ljay Newsome: Pitches well in no-decision

Newsome allowed a run on four hits over 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Astros on Tuesday. He struck out one. Newsome's only run came on a first-inning Kyle Tucker single that scored Michael Brantley. Kyle Seager's RBI double in the bottom of the first got Newsome off the hook. The right-hander didn't work very deep into the game, but it was the longest of his five appearances in 2020. He has a 5.17 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 15.2 innings. Due to the Mariners' six-man rotation, Newsome is not expected to make another start during the regular season.
