Player Outlook
Kyle Teel was traded from the Red Sox to the White Sox this offseason as the headliner in a four-prospect package that sent Garrett Crochet to Boston. The No. 14 overall pick in 2023, Teel dominated every pro league he played in before stumbling slightly (.255/.374/.343 slash line, two HR in 28 games) in his first taste of Triple-A. He is a pure hitter and on-base machine over a slugger, but he has enough pop to be a 15-20 homer threat thanks to his excellent hit tool and swing decisions. Teel has the glove and the arm to stick at catcher and play a lot during his peak seasons. He may end up being better in on-base percentage leagues than batting average leagues, but he should provide an above-average ratio in both formats relative to the position. Teel is a 45-grade runner, but he's opportunistic and could chip in a handful of steals (12-for-17 on the bases last year). Since Teel didn't dominate at Triple-A and isn't on the 40-man roster, we may not see him in the majors until May or June, but he's very close to being big-league ready. New teammate Edgar Quero is arguably an even better catching prospect than Teel and should beat Teel to the majors, and if they end up splitting the catching duties evenly long term it will cap each of their outputs.

  • White Sox's Kyle Teel: Headed to minors

The White Sox reassigned Teel to minor-league camp Monday. Though Teel and Edgar Quero are two of the more highly regarded catching prospects not just in the White Sox organization but in all of baseball, the duo will likely split time behind the plate and at designated hitter at Triple-A Charlotte to begin the season before making their respective MLB debuts later on in 2025. The White Sox appear set to proceed with Korey Lee as their No. 1 catcher, but after he posted a .591 OPS over 394 plate appearances in 2024, he likely won't be tough to dislodge atop the depth chart once the organization is confident Teel and/or Quero are big-league ready. As a member of the Red Sox organization last season, Teel slashed .288/.386/.433 with 13 home runs and 12 steals over 112 games at the Double-A and Triple-A levels.

  • White Sox's Kyle Teel: Slugging this spring

Teel is 5-for-15 with two home runs and a 4:3 K:BB this spring. Teel came into White Sox camp seemingly a long shot to make the team, and that probably remains the case given that he's made just two starts (and just one at catcher). However, he's undoubtedly made a good first impression after landing with Chicago this offseason in the trade that sent Garrett Crochet to the Red Sox. Fellow catching prospect Edgar Quero has not made a single start this spring. The White Sox seem likely to go with a Korey Lee/Matt Thaiss combo behind the plate to open the season, although non-roster invitee Omar Narvaez is also in the mix.

  • White Sox's Kyle Teel: Part of return for Crochet

The White Sox acquired Teel, Braden Montgomery, Chase Meidroth and Wikelman Gonzalez from the Red Sox on Wednesday in exchange for Garrett Crochet, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. A first-round pick in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft, Teel batted .288/.386/.433 with 13 home runs and 12 stolen bases over 112 games between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester in 2024. He'll turn 23 in February and could take over as the White Sox's starting catcher sooner rather than later, although fellow catching prospect Edgar Quero is also close to being major-league ready.

  • Red Sox's Kyle Teel: Summoned to Triple-A

The Red Sox promoted Teel from Double-A Portland to Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Teel had produced a .294 average with 11 home runs, 59 RBI, 64 runs scored and nine stolen bases over 320 at-bats in 83 games with Portland. He will look to keep it up at the Triple-A level, where he'll also be joined by shortstop Marcelo Mayer and outfielder Roman Anthony.
