Player Outlook
Kevin McGonigle is one of the better pure hitters in the minors and has a chance to contribute across the board in fantasy, although he has minimal experience above Single-A. A 5-foot-10 middle infielder whom the Tigers selected out of high school with the No. 37 overall pick in 2023, McGonigle's hit tool was the reason he got drafted where he did, but he is an even better pure hitter than expected, striking out at an 8.5 percent clip with a 89.7 percent contact rate in 2024. The lefty hitter comfortably projects to hit for a high average someday in the majors, and he should steal 20-plus bases. As for his power output, his 23.3 percent hard-hit rate and 103 mph 90th percentile exit velocity are middling marks for a player his age, and his future home park won't do him any favors. Defensively, he has a chance to stick at shortstop but is most likely to end up at the keystone. His 2024 season was cut short in early August due to a broken hand, which required surgery, so he only played 14 games at High-A. McGonigle should spend the bulk of 2025 at Double-A, where he will look to show he can hit for power against quality minor-league pitching.

  • Tigers' Kevin McGonigle: Gets surgery for broken hand

McGonigle underwent surgery Aug. 15 to repair a hamate bone fracture in his right hand, MLB.com reports. The Tigers haven't provided a timeline for McGonigle's return, but with High-A West Michigan's season ending Sept. 8, the 20-year-old infielder is most likely done for 2024. The 37th overall pick in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft, McGonigle finished his first full professional season with a .309/.401/.452 slash line to go with five home runs and 22 stolen bases over 328 plate appearances between stops with West Michigan and Single-A Lakeland.

  • Tigers' Kevin McGonigle: Hits IL with hamate fracture

High-A West Michigan placed McGonigle on its injured list Monday with a hamate fracture of his right hand. McGonigle is a left-handed hitter, but since the injury is to his throwing hand, he may not be cleared to return to game action before West Michigan's season ends Sept. 8. The shortstop has acquitted himself well as a 19-year-old in the Midwest League this season, slashing .214/.368/.357 with a home run and two stolen bases over 57 plate appearances since receiving a promotion from Single-A Lakeland shortly after the All-Star break.

  • Tigers' Kevin McGonigle: Returns from IL

Single-A Lakeland reinstated McGonigle (hamstring) from its 7-day injured list Tuesday. McGonigle missed about two weeks of action to begin the season while recovering from a left hamstring strain, but the injury hasn't inhibited him since he made his return less than a week ago. The infielder has gone 5-for-11 with two doubles, three walks, two runs, two RBI and three stolen bases in four games since returning to the lineup.

  • Tigers' Kevin McGonigle: Battling hamstring strain

McGonigle has a strained left hamstring, Sam Dykstra of MiLB.com reports. McGonigle began progressing toward a return Saturday, but his injury will prevent him from participating in the Tigers' Spring Breakout game against Philadelphia. The 19-year-old infielder worked his way up to Single-A in his first season as a pro, slashing .350/.438/.475 across 48 plate appearances.
