Morales was promoted from Triple-A Rochester ahead of Tuesday's game, when he served as the designated hitter. He struck out swinging in his first plate appearance in the opening frame, but he bounced back in the third, smacking the second pitch he saw from AJ Smith-Shawver deep to left-center field for a solo home run. It was an impressive big-league debut for Morales, who figures to see a fair amount of playing time the rest of this season at DH and at first and third base.

Morales earned a promotion to the big leagues by collecting a .286/.363/.519 batting line with 25 home runs and a 43:111 BB:K over 104 contests this season with Rochester. Morales has put together a strong campaign at Triple-A, where he's hitting .286 with 25 home runs, 76 RBI, six stolen bases and 82 runs over 104 games. The 24-year-old's promotion will be made official Tuesday when rosters expand. Morales made 47 starts at first base, 40 starts at the hot corner and 17 starts as the designated hitter for the Red Wings this season, so he'll likely have a few different paths to playing time with the Nationals.

Morales struggled to make an impression during spring training, going 1-for-17 with seven strikeouts across 11 games with the Nationals. Selected with the first pick of the second round in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft, Morales saw his 2024 campaign interrupted by a thumb injury. The 23-year-old was healthy to begin the current season and got off to a hot start with Harrisburg, slashing .315/.366/.520 with four home runs and a 23.2 percent strikeout rate over 33 games to earn the promotion. Over his first three contests with Rochester he's gone 2-for-9 with three walks against two strikeouts. Morales had been out of action for nearly three months due to a left thumb injury before he made his return to the Harrisburg lineup last week. The 22-year-old third baseman is slashing .239/.327/.359 with three home runs and three stolen bases across 162 plate appearances for the Double-A club this season.
