  • Zack Showalter: Cut loose by Cardinals

The Cardinals released Showalter on Tuesday. Showalter showed initial promise after being acquired from the Orioles in the August 2023 trade that sent Jack Flaherty to Baltimore, fanning 59 batters in 34.1 innings while holding a 2.62 ERA at Single-A Palm Beach in 2024. He's had a difficult time staying healthy and performing since then, however, and had been battered for 16 runs (15 earned) over 8.2 frames this season at High-A Peoria.

  • Cardinals' Zack Showalter: Cleared for Spring Breakout game

Showalter (shoulder) is listed on St. Louis' roster for its March 14 Spring Breakout game against Miami prospects. The 21-year-old right-hander looks to be healthy again after he made his final appearance for Single-A Palm Beach on Aug. 1 last season before being shut down with a shoulder injury. Prior to going down with the injury, Showalter turned in a 2.62 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 59:18 K:BB in 34.1 innings out of the Palm Beach bullpen.

  • Cardinals' Zack Showalter: Ends season on shelf

Single-A Palm Beach placed Showalter on its 7-day injured list Aug. 16 with an unspecified injury. Showalter, 20, posted a 2.62 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 59 strikeouts over 34.1 innings before being shut down with the injury. The Cardinals appear committed to developing him as a reliever, as he had made each of his 24 appearances out of the bullpen this season.
