Reds' Lyon Richardson: Drawing short-notice start
The Reds announced that Richardson will serve as their opening pitcher for Monday's game against the Royals.
With Chase Burns (illness) being scratched from his scheduled turn through the rotation on short notice, the Reds will turn to Richardson to make his first big-league start since 2023. Prior to being promoted from Triple-A Louisville on Saturday, Richardson has worked between two and three innings in nine of his 18 appearances in the minors this season, so he should be capable of providing a little more length than the typical opener. That said, Richardson isn't expected to work deep into Monday's contest, so the Reds could count on new call-up Brandon Leibrandt -- who had been starting with Louisville -- to cover multiple innings out of the bullpen.

Reds' Lyon Richardson: Selected from Louisville
The Reds selected Richardson's contract from Triple-A Louisville on Saturday.
Richardson has been with Louisville all season, turning in a 4.75 ERA and 1.26 WHIP alongside a 34:14 K:BB through 30.1 innings. He'll head to the majors as a replacement for Pierce Johnson (elbow) and likely be limited to low-leverage work as long as he's with the Reds. Kyle Nicolas was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

Reds' Lyon Richardson: Pushed off 40-man
The Reds designated Richardson for assignment Saturday, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Following the Reds' acquisition of outfielder Dane Myers (knee) from Miami on Saturday, Richardson will end up as the roster casualty necessary to create space on the 40-man. The 25-year-old reliever finished 2025 with a 4.54 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 30:21 K:BB across 37.2 regular-season innings. However, his 4.06 FIP indicates that he performed slightly better than what his base stats suggest, and there's a chance another team in need of bullpen depth claims the right-hander off waivers.

Reds' Lyon Richardson: Back with big club
Richardson was brought up from Triple-A Louisville to serve as the 27th man for Sunday's game against Atlanta.
After the Speedway Classic was suspended Saturday in the first inning following multiple rain delays, Atlanta and Cincinnati will resume the game Sunday. Because starter Chase Burns won't pitch after tossing a perfect inning a day earlier, the Reds will lean on a slew of relievers to get them through the contest. Richardson will be a candidate to head back to Louisville immediately after the contest.
