Pointing out that Alek Thomas enjoyed a career year is faint praise, considering his personal best 81 wRC+ was well below average. Furthermore, his strikeout rate was a career worst, and he relied on a .324 BABIP, which was not supported by his falling hard hit rate. Not to pile on, but Thomas graded among the weakest defenders in center field. His ground ball rate dropped to a career-low 52.1 percent last season, which continued to cap already modest power. While he owns 75th-percentile sprint speed, it has little effect alongside a .289 OBP. Thomas is slated to open the season in center field, but with the Diamondbacks reshaping their roster, his role is far from secure and his place with the organization is not assured.

    The Diamondbacks and Thomas avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.9625 million contract Thursday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Thomas was in his first year of arbitration eligibility. The 25-year-old is regarded as a plus defender in center field but has not progressed offensively, finishing 2025 with a .249/.289/.370 batting line. If he's still with the team on Opening Day, Thomas figures to again receive the bulk of the reps in center field.

    According to sources, Thomas or Jake McCarthy will likely be traded during the offseason, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. The Diamondbacks haven't determined which player will stay or go, but there are cost savings to be had. Thomas is considered the better defender while McCarthy has been more productive with a bat in hand, but neither has taken hold of the everyday job in center field. Potential replacements include Blaze Alexander, Jorge Barrosa and Tim Tawa. Jordan Lawlar, who has played a handful of games in center field during winter ball, is also an option.
