  • Blue Jays' Jake Bloss: Could get call in September

Bloss could be brought up from Triple-A Buffalo in September if the Blue Jays elect to go with a six-man rotation for the final month of the season, Kaitlyn McGrath of the Athletic reports. Acquired in the Yusei Kikuchi trade with Houston, Bloss has made three starts for Buffalo in August, tossing 9.2 scoreless innings with an 8:5 K:BB. The 23-year-old right-hander is in his first full professional season after being a third-round pick of the Astros in 2023, so Toronto is keeping an eye on his workload, but he's only thrown 75.2 innings so far across four levels -- he started the year at High-A Asheville. A regular turn in September could set Bloss up for a full-time spot in the Jays' rotation in 2025.

  • Blue Jays' Jake Bloss: Arrives in Buffalo

Bloss has joined Triple-A Buffalo and is slated to start for the affiliate Saturday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. Bloss was acquired from the Astros at the trade deadline as a part of the return package for left-hander Yusei Kikuchi and will now make his first start with his new organization at the Triple-A level. Before the trade, the 23-year-old made three starts with Houston, giving up nine runs over 11.2 innings while striking out 11 batters. General manager Ross Atkins said following the deadline last week that Bloss will get some run at Triple-A before joining the major-league rotation later this season.

  • Blue Jays' Jake Bloss: Should join rotation later in year

General manager Ross Atkins indicated Tuesday that Bloss will get some "breathing room" at Triple-A Buffalo before being called up and added to the Blue Jays' rotation, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. "Our ideal outcome is that he's helping us this year and growing and developing here in Toronto," Atkins said. "We're going to get to know him, make sure that he's in the strongest possible spot." The right-hander was part of the package the Jays received from Houston in the Yusei Kikuchi deal, but Bloss will begin his Toronto tenure in the minors to help him get settled. Assuming he sees game action for Buffalo, the Bisons will be the fifth different affiliate the 23-year-old has pitched for this season -- he began the year with High-A Asheville before stints at Double-A Corpus Christi and Triple-A Sugarland, eventually making his big-league debut with the Astros on June 21. Bloss posted an impressive 1.64 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 63:21 K:BB in 66 innings across his three minor-league stops, but he got tagged for five homers in 11.2 frames for the Astros before the trade.

  • Blue Jays' Jake Bloss: Going to Toronto for Kikuchi

The Blue Jays acquired Bloss, outfielder Joey Loperfido and infielder Will Wagner from the Astros on Monday in exchange for left-hander Yusei Kikuchi, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Bloss was scheduled to start for the Astros on Monday against the Pirates, but he was a late scratch due to his inclusion in the trade. He last pitched Tuesday, so he could slot into the Toronto rotation for its series this week in Baltimore. One of the Astros' top pitching prospects, Bloss had a 1.48 ERA, 0.68 WHIP and 38 strikeouts in 48.2 innings across his last nine minor-league starts, primarily at Double-A. He doesn't have dominant stuff, but Bloss has a deep pitch mix and throws strikes (5.5 percent walk rate in the majors).

  • Astros' Jake Bloss: Not starting Monday

Bloss was scratched from his scheduled start Monday against the Pirates, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. Bloss has made two starts for the Astros since being activated from the injured list July 11, covering eight innings while allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits and two walks. The Astros haven't provided an explanation for why Bloss was scratched from the start, and he may still be available out of the bullpen if Houston elects to have a reliever serve as its opening pitcher for the game.

  • Astros' Jake Bloss: Victimized by long ball

Bloss (0-1) took the loss in Tuesday's game against the Athletics, allowing five runs on six hits and a walk while striking out five over four innings. Bloss did not fare well against a hot Athletics lineup. He began by allowing a leadoff triple before Brent Rooker took him deep to put the Astros in an early 2-0 hole. Lawrence Butler was next to homer off him in the third before Seth Brown and Zack Gelof went back-to-back in the fourth. Bloss hasn't been able to cover more than four innings in any of his three starts since getting promoted just over a month ago and he'll likely see his time in the bigs temporarily come to an end next week once Justin Verlander (neck) returns from the injured list. Bloss has a 6.94 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 11:3 K:BB in 11.2 innings.

  • Astros' Jake Bloss: Getting another start

Bloss is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Athletics in Oakland, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Bloss will be making his first turn through the rotation of the second half after he returned from the 15-day injured list July 11 and covered four innings in a start against the Marlins. The rookie right-hander's stay in the rotation will likely come to an end once Justin Verlander (neck) is activated from the IL, perhaps as soon as next week.

  • Astros' Jake Bloss: Goes four innings in return

Bloss did not factor into the decision in a win over the Marlins on Thursday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk over four innings while striking out four. Bloss got off to a bit of a rough start, surrendering a solo homer to Bryan De La Cruz in the second at-bat of the game before then throwing two wild pitches in the second inning, which helped lead to another run coming across for Miami. However, the right-hander appeared to settle in after that, hurling two scoreless innings before being relieved by Shawn Dubin to open the fifth. Bloss threw 82 pitches in his first start since returning from the injured list and induced nine whiffs while throwing first-pitch strikes to 13 of 18 batters. He'll look to build off this performance in his next start, which will come after the All-Star break.

  • Astros' Jake Bloss: Set for bullpen session

Bloss (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Sunday, MLB.com reports. Bloss has played catch a few times since landing on the injured list, but Sunday will mark his most intense activity. He's expected to return in early July, shortly after he is first eligible to be activated.

  • Astros' Jake Bloss: Plays catch Wednesday

Bloss (shoulder) was spotted playing catch on the field Wednesday prior to the Astros' game against the Rockies, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. The Astros had initially planned for Bloss to resume playing catch Friday, but he was able to perform the activity a little sooner than expected. He indicated that all was fine with his right shoulder following the workout, but the real test for Bloss will come once he gets back on the mound and throws at full velocity. The rookie could play catch on a few more occasions before the Astros are comfortable clearing him for bullpen sessions.

  • Astros' Jake Bloss: To resume throwing Friday

Bloss (shoulder) will play light catch Friday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Bloss was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday with right shoulder inflammation following his major-league debut, but he has a shot to return shortly after those 15 days are up. Whether he returns in the majors or minors could hinge on whether Bloss beats Justin Verlander (neck) back from the IL.

  • Astros' Jake Bloss: Lands on IL with shoulder injury

The Astros placed Bloss on the 15-day injured list Saturday due to right shoulder discomfort. Bloss was lifted from Friday's 14-11 win over the Orioles after allowing two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out two over 3.2 innings in his major-league debut. The Astros recalled right-hander Luis Contreras from Triple-A Sugar Land in a corresponding move.

  • Astros' Jake Bloss: IL stint imminent

Astros manager Joe Espada said Saturday that Bloss will be placed on the injured list with right shoulder discomfort, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. It's a blow for the soon-to-be 23-year-old Bloss, who made his major-league debut Friday against the Orioles. He was lifted after 3.2 innings due to right shoulder discomfort, after allowing two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out two. With Bloss and Justin Verlander (neck) on the injured list, the Astros will likely have to decide on a fill-in starter from either the bullpen or the minors, though they have multiple off days next week.

  • Astros' Jake Bloss: Set to make MLB debut Friday

The Astros will call up Bloss from Double-A Corpus Christi to start Friday's game against the Orioles in his MLB debut, Ken Rosenthal and Chandler Rome of The Athletic report. It's an aggressive promotion, as Bloss was a third-round pick in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft and has made just eight starts at the Double-A level. He'll skip over the Triple-A level and go straight to the majors after holding a 1.74 ERA and 60:21 K:BB in 62 innings covering 12 starts between High-A Asheville and Corpus Christi. Bloss is taking the rotation spot of the injured Justin Verlander (neck) and could receive an additional start after Friday while Verlander recovers.
