The Astros released Coleman on Friday. Coleman had been previously removed from the 40-man roster and is now out of the organization altogether. He's spent most of 2024 at the Triple-A level, posting a 6.50 ERA and 42:42 K:BB over 36 innings.

  • Astros' Dylan Coleman: Removed from 40-man roster

The Astros designated Coleman for assignment Tuesday. The club needed to clear a 40-man roster spot for the addition of Zach Dezenzo. Coleman has spent virtually all of his season at Triple-A Sugar Land, where he holds a 6.50 ERA and 42:42 K:BB over 36 frames.

  • Astros' Dylan Coleman: Recalled from Triple-A

Coleman was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land on Tuesday. Coleman is getting recalled with J.P. France being placed on the Paternity Leave list. • Astros' Dylan Coleman: Optioned to Sugar Land

The Astros optioned Coleman to Triple-A Sugar Land on Thursday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Coleman struggled heavily in the majors last season, posting an 8.84 ERA and 2.02 WHIP across 18.1 innings with the Royals. After being traded to Houston in December, Coleman's troubles have continued to plague him in spring training, and he will likely remain in Triple-A until a noticeable improvement is made on the mound.

  • Astros' Dylan Coleman: Traded to Astros

The Astros acquired Coleman from the Royals on Wednesday in exchange for Carlos Mateo, Anne Rogers and Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com report. Coleman broke out with Kansas City in 2022 but regressed in a big way in 2023, posting an 8.84 ERA and 21:19 K:BB over 18.1 innings during his time in the majors. There's stuff to work with here, though, and the Astros have a good reputation when it comes to getting the most out of their pitchers.

  • Royals' Dylan Coleman: Optioned to Triple-A

Coleman was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday. Coleman's season struggles continued Monday when he allowed a walk-off home run after hitting a batter in a 6-4 loss to the Athletics. Zack Greinke (elbow) was reinstated from the injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Royals' Dylan Coleman: Gets walked off

Coleman (0-2) allowed two runs on one hit and a hit-by-pitch without recording an out to take the loss Monday versus the Athletics. Coleman plunked Ryan Noda and then served up a walk-off two-run home run to Brent Rooker in the ninth inning. The right-hander has nine appearances in August, but he's completed an inning in just three of them. He's given up five runs (four earned) over 5.2 frames this month, and a 7:7 K:BB and four hit batsmen indicates unsteady control. Overall, Coleman has an 8.84 ERA, 2.02 WHIP and 21:19 K:BB through 18.1 innings this season.

  • Royals' Dylan Coleman: Takes first loss

Coleman (0-1) allowed an unearned run on a hit and a walk while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Mariners. Coleman loaded the bases with an error, a hit and a walk, and then yielded a sacrifice fly. The Mariners held the lead the rest of the way, sticking Coleman with his first loss in 21 major-league appearances this year. He's avoided taking more defeats simply because the Royals are often already behind when he pitches. For the year, he's managed an awful 8.31 ERA, 2.02 WHIP and 20:18 K:BB through 17.1 innings, though he's also managed to earn four holds.

  • Royals' Dylan Coleman: Opening Friday

Coleman will serve as the Royals' opening pitcher for Friday's game against the Cardinals, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Coleman will be making his first career major-league start Friday, though he will likely only remain in the game for an inning or two before handing things over to Angel Zerpa, who will pitch bulk innings. Coleman hasn't performed very well in the majors this season, accumulating a 10.05 ERA and 2.09 WHIP through 14.1 frames.

  • Royals' Dylan Coleman: Decent work in spring

Coleman has allowed one earned run on four hits and three walks while striking out six over three innings across three Cactus League appearances. Coleman was one of the Royals' more effective relievers in 2022, posting a 2.78 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 71:37 K:BB and 16 holds over 68 games. The walk issues are still popping up this spring, and Coleman's 3.87 FIP last year suggests regression could be on the way if he can't improve at limiting baserunners.

  • Royals' Dylan Coleman: Unable to pitch in Toronto

Coleman is unable to travel to Canada for the four-game series in Toronto this weekend due to his vaccination status, so he'll be placed on the restricted list Wednesday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. The Royals have 10 players heading to the restricted list for their weekend series, but Coleman is the team's only reliever that is expected to be unavailable due to being unvaccinated. The team will likely call up some relievers to serve as bullpen depth ahead of the All-Star break.

  • Royals' Dylan Coleman: Logs second hold

Coleman pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one walk, to earn a hold in Wednesday's 8-4 win over the Blue Jays. Coleman allowed six runs over seven innings in his last five appearances in May, but he's logged 2.1 scoreless inning to begin June. The right-hander has filled a middle-relief role with the Royals missing several of the bullpen regulars to injury and illness. For the season, Coleman has a 3.57 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 27:19 K:BB, two holds and a 1-1 record across 22.2 innings.

  • Royals' Dylan Coleman: Struggles Friday

Coleman allowed four runs on three hits and a walk with one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning in Friday's 12-2 loss to the Yankees. Coleman was tasked with the seventh inning in a 3-2 game, but he didn't do so well. He allowed an RBI single to DJ LeMahieu and a three-run home run to Aaron Judge before Amir Garrett entered the game. Coleman had pitched reasonably well before Friday's messy outing. He's posted a 6.14 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 11:5 K:BB with one hold in nine appearances across 7.1 innings.

  • Royals' Dylan Coleman: On Opening Day roster

Coleman made the Royals' Opening Day roster, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. The 25-year-old right-hander got his first taste of major-league action last season, allowing one run on five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Coleman made the Opening Day roster because fellow reliever Joel Payamps (personal) was placed on the family medical emergency list. As such, Coleman will need to hit the ground running if he's to retain a spot in the big-league bullpen. He was solid with a 3.55 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 56:17 K:BB while logging a 4-0 record and three saves with Triple-A Omaha in the latter half of last season.
