Smith missed out on the Baltimore's Opening Day roster and has now lost his spot on the 40-man roster without making his big-league debut. The 24-year-old has appeared in two games for Norfolk this year and has allowed two earned runs on five hits with a 3:6 K:BB across 7.2 innings.

Smith made 16 appearances (15 starts) in Norfolk last year and posted a 6.23 ERA and 1.87 WHIP in 56.1 innings. He'll need to show better results in the minors if he hopes to make his major-league debut in 2022.
Smith was added to Baltimore's 40-man roster Friday, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
It was a tale of two seasons for Smith, as he logged a 1.04 ERA in 26 innings at Double-A and a 6.23 ERA in 56.1 innings at Triple-A. He struck out well over a batter per inning at both stops, but his command needs work for him to stick as a starter.

Smith isn't a standout prospect but has a chance to be at least a backend starter. In 23 starts at the High-A and Double-A levels last season, the lefty posted a 3.15 ERA, striking out 27.2 percent of opposing batters while walking 8.2 percent.
Smith has been named to the Mets' 60-man player pool, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
The 23-year-old southpaw will give the club some additional rotation depth. Smith reached Double-A Binghamton for the first time last season, posting a 3.45 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 28:15 K:BB in 31.1 innings.

Smith is a possible beneficiary if big-league teams are allowed to use expanded rosters to accommodate a shortened or compacted schedule, Deesha Thosar of The New York Daily News reports.
Proposals have been floated that would see a 29-man roster in MLB for at least the first month of a shortened season. In that scenario, Smith -- the Mets' Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2019 -- could be called upon to bolster the big-league pitching staff if the organization thinks he's ready. A seventh-round pick in 2018, the 22-year-old southpaw skipped Low-A entirely in his quick ascent up the ladder and posted a 130:39 K:BB over 117 innings last year split between High-A and Double-A.
