  • White Sox's Steven Wilson: Pulled off rehab assignment

Wilson (back) was returned from his rehab assignment Sunday due to right shoulder impingement syndrome, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. Wilson was originally forced to the injured list in mid-August due to a lower-back strain. He appeared to be closing in on a return, having made eight appearances during his rehab stint with Triple-A Charlotte, but the shoulder impingement will bring an early end to his campaign. Wilson posted a 5.71 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 34:26 K:BB over 34.2 innings in his first season with the White Sox.

  • White Sox's Steven Wilson: Starting up rehab assignment

Wilson (back) will begin a rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A Charlotte, James Fegan of SoxMachine.com reports. Wilson was placed on the IL on Aug. 17 with a lower-back strain, but the fact that he's already heading out on a rehab assignment suggests that he should be ready to rejoin the White Sox when he's first eligible Friday, or shortly thereafter. With the active roster expanding to 28 players Sunday, the White Sox could wait until that day to bring the righty reliever back.

  • White Sox's Steven Wilson: Brought up to bigs

The White Sox recalled Wilson from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday. Wilson will be back with the White Sox after being optioned July 8, supplying some bullpen depth with Michael Soroka (shoulder) moving to the injured list. Wilson owns a 3.46 ERA across 26.0 innings with the White Sox this season.

  • White Sox's Steven Wilson: Takes extra-inning loss in return

Wilson (1-3) allowed an unearned run on a hit and a walk in one-third of an inning, taking the extra-inning loss to the Mariners on Wednesday. Wilson missed three weeks with a back strain, and this was his first appearance back. While he threw 10 of 14 pitches for strikes -- his walk was an intentional one to Dominic Canzone -- Wilson ended up with the loss when Mitch Haniger hit a walk-off single. Through 19.1 innings this season, Wilson has a 2.79 ERA despite a 1.34 WHIP and 19:15 K:BB. He's added six holds and a blown save, so there's a chance he'll see some high-leverage work, though there's not much of that to go around for the worst team in the majors.

  • White Sox's Steven Wilson: Back from injured list

The White Sox reinstated Wilson (back) from the 15-day injured list Wednesday. The right-hander landed on the shelf in late May with a back strain but is ready to rejoin Chicago after making two rehab appearances with Triple-A Charlotte. Wilson has been a reliable high-leverage option for manager Pedro Grifol this year with six holds and a 2.84 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 19:14 K:BB across 19 innings.

  • White Sox's Steven Wilson: Sent out on rehab assignment

The White Sox sent Wilson (back) to Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment. Charlotte's game Tuesday was rained out, preventing Wilson from making his first rehab appearance. The reliever has missed just two weeks with a back strain, so he shouldn't require more than one or two rehab outings before rejoining the White Sox' bullpen.

  • White Sox's Steven Wilson: Placed on IL with back injury

The White Sox placed Wilson on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a back strain. It's not clear how long Wilson is expected to be sidelined by the injury, but he'll be eligible for activation June 4. The right-hander has managed a 2.84 ERA with the White Sox this season in spite of 14 walks over 19 innings.

  • White Sox's Steven Wilson: Blows save chance

Wilson (1-2) allowed two earned runs on three hits and a walk while striking out one across 0.2 innings to blow the save and take the loss Tuesday against the Twins. Wilson has picked up two holds this season and has held a high-leverage role in the Chicago bullpen. He's had plenty of success -- eight of his 10 appearances have been scoreless-- but he ran into trouble in a save situation Tuesday. Wilson entered the game in the ninth inning with a one-run lead but immediately served up a game-tying home run to Byron Buxton. He got into more trouble before ultimately allowing a game-winning knock to Alex Kirilloff. The White Sox have only three saves as a team this season, but Wilson could get in the mix when Michael Kopech is used in high-leverage situations rather than in the final frame.

  • White Sox's Steven Wilson: Shipped to ChiSox

The Padres traded Wilson, Drew Thorpe, Samuel Zavala and Jairo Iriarte to the White Sox on Wednesday in exchange for Dylan Cease, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. Wilson logged a 3.91 ERA and 1.17 WHIP across 53 innings last season with the Padres, though he spent the final month of the year on the IL due to left hip inflammation. His hip doesn't appear to be an issue heading into this season, however, as he's pitched six scoreless innings so far during spring training while striking out 10 batters and walking seven. Wilson will immediately become one of the more reliable arms in Chicago's bullpen and could potentially be in the mix for save opportunities if he starts strong in 2024.

  • Padres' Steven Wilson: Not ready for mound work

Manager Bob Melvin said Monday that Wilson (hip) has resumed playing catch at the Padres' facility in Arizona, but the right-hander has yet to start throwing off a mound, MLB.com reports. Wilson was placed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 30 with left hip inflammation. The Padres haven't shut Wilson down nor indicated that his injury is especially serious, and while he won't require an extensive buildup as a one- or two-inning reliever, he's still not a lock to make it back from the IL before the season ends Oct. 1.

  • Padres' Steven Wilson: Throws to hitters Saturday

Wilson (pectoral) tossed a simulated inning Saturday, per MLB.com. Wilson has been on the injured list since June 27 with a right pec strain. The righty reliever reportedly felt fine after throwing to hitters Saturday, and he's scheduled for another live session Tuesday. If that goes well, Wilson could rejoin the Padres bullpen immediately following the All-Star break.

  • Padres' Steven Wilson: Placed on 15-day IL

Wilson was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right pectoral strain Tuesday. Wilson will be unavailable until after the All-Star break as he tends to his injured pectoral. He will be replaced in the major-league bullpen by Drew Carlton, who was called up from Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday. Wilson has been very effective this season with San Diego, compiling a 2.43 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with 40 strikeouts over 37 frames in 2023.

  • Padres' Steven Wilson: Mixed results this spring

Wilson finished the Cactus League slate with a 3.52 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 6:4 K:BB over 7.2 innings. Wilson allowed a lot of baserunners across his seven outings, but only three of them crossed the plate. The righty reliever is coming off a strong rookie campaign during which he posted a 3.06 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 53:20 K:BB over 53 frames. Wilson could see some high-leverage work to begin the season with Robert Suarez (arm) and Drew Pomeranz (elbow) likely to begin the campaign on the injured list.

  • Padres' Steven Wilson: Tabbed to open Thursday

Wilson will start Thursday's game against the Dodgers, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. Wilson has a 2.88 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 50:18 K:BB across 50 innings this year, and he'll make his first career start as the opener in Thursday's series finale. The rookie right-hander is unlikely to qualify for a potential victory and should give way to the bullpen after an inning or two.

  • Padres' Steven Wilson: Optioned to El Paso

Wilson was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Saturday. It's not every day you see a pitcher with a 3.57 ERA and 1.08 WHIP over 33 appearances sent packing. The Padres are getting Robert Suarez (knee) back from the injured list, and Wilson is a rookie with options. He should be back with the big-league team in short order.

  • Padres' Steven Wilson: Returns from injured list

Wilson (hamstring) was activated from the 15-day injured list by the Padres on Friday. Wilson landed on the shelf with hamstring tendinitis in late June, and he'll rejoin the active roster after a one-game rehab stint with Triple-A El Paso. The rookie right-hander has recorded one save and five holds with a 3.62 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 29:9 K:BB across 27.1 innings this season.

  • Padres' Steven Wilson: Shelved with hamstring injury

The Padres placed Wilson on the 15-day injured list Sunday with left hamstring tendinitis. San Diego brought up lefty Ray Kerr from Triple-A El Paso to replace Wilson in the bullpen. Before apparently picking up the injury during his one-out appearance in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Phillies, Wilson had compiled four wins, one save, five holds and a 3.62 ERA across 27.1 innings in relief this season.

  • Padres' Steven Wilson: Optioned to Triple-A

Wilson was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Friday. Wilson saw some high-leverage opportunities during his time with the major-league club, and he was rewarded with three wins and five holds. However, he converted just one of his three save chances and will head to the minors after Tim Hill (shoulder) was reinstated from the injured list Friday. If Wilson performs well in El Paso, it wouldn't be surprising to see him rejoin the Padres at some point.

  • Padres' Steven Wilson: Secures fifth hold

Wilson earned a hold against Atlanta on Friday by allowing no runs over two-thirds of an inning. He surrendered one hit and struck out one. When Wilson came on in the eighth inning, the Padres were up by only one run. The right-hander retired the first two batters he faced before allowing a single and subsequently being replaced by closer Taylor Rogers, who wrapped up the frame. Wilson's scoreless outing was his fourth straight after he gave up two runs April 30 against Pittsburgh. The right-hander has compiled a 2.51 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 17:5 K:BB across 14.1 innings on the season. He has racked up three wins, five holds and one save through 14 outings.

  • Padres' Steven Wilson: Hurls two stellar relief innings

Wilson pitched two perfect innings against the Giants on Wednesday, striking out five of the six batters he faced. Sean Manaea was impressive in his six frames as a starter in the contest, and Wilson came on to relieve him in the seventh with San Francisco holding a one-run lead. Though the Padres were unable to muster a late-inning comeback, Wilson held the Giants at bay with two perfect frames during which he threw 21 of 26 pitches for strikes and fanned the final five batters to stand in against him. The impressive outing included nine swinging strikes and first-pitch strikes to five of the six hitters he faced. Wilson appears to be climbing up the bullpen pecking order thanks to a strong start to the campaign. Thus far he has racked up two wins, posted a 7:2 K:BB and allowed just one run over four innings.
