Player Outlook
Leo De Vries has been a known commodity in dynasty leagues since he was 16 and is one of the best prospects to ever get traded at the trade deadline. He was shipped from San Diego to the Athletics in the Mason Miller blockbuster and finished the year on fire, ensuring he remained a top-five fantasy prospect. He hit an opposite-field home run in his first career playoff at-bat and slashed .394/.444/.864 with eight home runs and an 11:5 K:BB in his final 72 plate appearances, including the Texas League playoffs. The youngest player to log 25-plus plate appearances at Double-A, De Vries' youth is a key component in evaluating his performance and projecting ahead. Not counting his postseason exploits, De Vries slashed .255/.355/.451 with 15 home runs, 11 steals and a 20 percent strikeout rate in 118 games across the two organizations, with 97 of those games coming at High-A. He lacks the same explosive athleticism and speed of some of the game's other top prospects, so it will be his bat that drives his real-life and fantasy value. The uber-talented switch hitter appears to be on the fast track to the big leagues and figures to be Jacob Wilson's double-play partner by late 2026 or early 2027.

  • Athletics' Leo De Vries: Nets invite to spring training

The Athletics have extended De Vries an invitation to big-league spring training. The Athletics also invited Jamie Arnold and Gage Jump, among others, to major-league camp. Acquired from the Padres in the trade that sent Mason Miller to San Diego, De Vries slashed .255/.355/.451 with 15 home runs, 11 stolen bases and a 66:107 BB:K over 118 games between the High-A and Double-A levels in 2025. De Vries' best production came after a late-season promotion to Double-A Midland, and he'll likely head back there to begin the 2026 season. Just 19 years old, De Vries is not a finished product but has some of the highest upside of any position player in the minors.

  • Athletics' Leo De Vries: On fire at Double-A

De Vries went 2-for-4 with a home run in Tuesday's playoff game for Double-A Midland against Amarillo. He hit an opposite-field home run in his first career playoff at-bat Tuesday and has six homers in his last nine games for the RockHounds. De Vries, one of the best prospects to get traded at the trade deadline in recent memory, slashed .281/.359/.551 with five home runs, two steals, a 144 wRC+ and a 19.4 percent strikeout rate in 21 regular-season games at Double-A as an 18-year-old. The uber-talented switch hitter appears to be on the fast track to the big leagues and figures to be Jacob Wilson's double-play partner by late 2026 or early 2027.

  • Padres' Leo De Vries: In control at High-A

De Vries is hitting .447 with three home runs, two steals, nine walks and three strikeouts over his last 11 games at High-A Fort Wayne. The youngest player at High-A, De Vries is slashing .309/.400/.593 with four home runs, three steals and a 15.6 percent strikeout rate in 22 games this season. It's wild to say about a player who doesn't turn 19 until the fall, but the switch-hitting De Vries will probably force a promotion to Double-A in the coming weeks. The only knock so far from a real-life standpoint is that his defense at shortstop needs some work, but he's looking like a flawless dynasty prospect.

  • Padres' Leo De Vries: Cut from big-league camp

The Padres reassigned De Vries to minor-league camp Thursday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The 18-year-old De Vries and fellow teenage prospect Ethan Salas were among the 11 cuts the Padres made Thursday. De Vries posted an .803 OPS with 11 homers and 13 steals with Single-A Lake Elsinore in 2024 and could move up to High-A Fort Wayne in 2025.

  • Padres' Leodalis De Vries: Invited to spring training

The Padres have extended De Vries an invitation to major-league camp during spring training. De Vries is only 18 and spent the entirety of the 2024 season at Single-A Lake Elsinore, so he is not under real consideration to make the Padres' Opening Day roster. However, San Diego did want to give the youngster a look this spring. Fellow top prospect Ethan Salas will also be in big-league camp.

  • Padres' Leodalis De Vries: Included on Fall League roster

The Padres list De Vries (shoulder) as one the organization's eight prospects on the Peoria Javelinas' Arizona Fall League roster, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. A right shoulder strain prevented De Vries from playing in any games for Single-A Lake Elsinore after Aug. 17, but his inclusion on the Peoria roster implies that he's expected to be healthy by the time Arizona Fall League play gets underway Oct. 7. De Vries won't turn 18 years old until next month, but the infielder has already established himself as one of the top lower-level prospects in baseball after slashing .237/.361/.441 with 11 home runs and 13 stolen bases in 360 plate appearances in the California League this season.

  • Padres' Leodalis De Vries: Struggling in Single-A ball

De Vries is slashing .148/.303/.259 with a 30.3 percent strikeout rate through seven games with Single-A Lake Elsinore. San Diego was aggressive in placing De Vries in Single-A as a 17-year-old, and the prized international prospect began his professional career by going 4-for-13 with four RBI over his first three games. However, he's gone 0-for-14 with six strikeouts over his subsequent four contests, highlighting the inevitable growing pains given his age. On a positive note, De Vries has compiled a 15.2 percent walk rate thus far, so he's at least demonstrating some patience at the plate.
