Blue Jays' Brett Bateman: Exiting starting nine
Bateman is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game against the Red Sox.
Bateman had made seven straight starts, but the left-handed hitter will take a seat as the Red Sox send southpaw Payton Tolle to the bump. Myles Straw will patrol center field for the Blue Jays.

Blue Jays' Brett Bateman: Drives in two runs Tuesday
Bateman went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Tuesday's 5-3 win over Boston.
Bateman got the Blue Jays on the board with an RBI double in the third inning before tying things up at 3-3 in the fifth with a single to center field that brought Myles Straw home. Part of the Blue Jays' return for sending Kevin Gausman to the Cubs on Aug. 2 along with infielder Ty Southisene, Bateman has wasted no time in getting acclimated to his new team north of the border. He's gone 6-for-22 with three RBI through the first five games of his major-league career, and he figures to see regular playing time in center field over the final weeks of the season.

Blue Jays' Brett Bateman: Getting look as starting CF
Bateman went 2-for-6 with an RBI in Sunday's extra-innings loss to the Phillies.
The Blue Jays deployed right-handed hitters Myles Straw and Davis Schneider in the outfield corners, but the lefty-swinging Bateman stayed in center field and manned the leadoff spot against southpaw Jesus Luzardo. Bateman even got a hit off Luzardo, a single in the fifth inning that produced his first RBI in the majors. The 24-year-old has started three straight games in center field since his promotion, going 3-for-14 with a double, two walks and two runs scored, and Bateman's combination of defense, speed, plate discipline and solid contact skills have quickly moved him to the top of the depth chart with Daulton Varsho now in Houston.

Blue Jays' Brett Bateman: Makes impact in MLB debut
Bateman went 1-for-2 with two walks, a double and a run scored in Friday's 5-4 win over the Phillies.
Making his MLB debut, Bateman got the start in center field and hit ninth and didn't appear overmatched -- the 24-year-old lashed the very first pitch he saw from Zack Wheeler off the wall in left-center field, missing a homer by a foot or two. The Blue Jays have a vacancy in center after trading Daulton Varsho at the deadline, and Bateman could claim the strong side of a platoon with Myles Straw if he keeps producing. Over 84 Triple-A games this season between Buffalo and Iowa, Bateman compiled a .311/.429/.416 slash line with three homers and 20 steals.

Blue Jays' Brett Bateman: Joins big-league club
The Blue Jays selected Bateman's contract from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday.
The 24-year-old was acquired from the Cubs earlier this week in the deal that sent Kevin Gausman to Chicago. Bateman was an eighth-round pick in 2023 and will be making his big-league debut with Toronto after slashing .311/.429/.416 with three homers, 33 RBI, 61 runs scored, 20 stolen bases and a 62:67 BB:K across 359 plate appearances at the Triple-A level this season. He could get a chance to handle the strong side of a platoon in center field with Myles Straw.

The Blue Jays acquired Bateman and infielder Ty Southisene from the Cubs on Sunday in exchange for right-hander Kevin Gausman, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
The 24-year-old Bateman has had an impressive season at Triple-A Iowa, slashing .312/.430/.421 with three home runs and 20 steals over 82 games. He'll report to the Blue Jays' Triple-A affiliate in Buffalo and could have a shot at making his MLB debut later this season, though Toronto would need to add him to its 40-man roster.

Cubs' Brett Bateman: Back in action at Double-A
Bateman (hand) has gone 8-for-30 with 10 walks, two stolen bases, seven runs and three RBI in 10 games for Double-A Knoxville since making his season debut April 9.
Bateman missed most of spring training after undergoing surgery in late February to address a fractured hamate bone in his right hand, but he avoided a stint on Knoxville's 7-day injured list and was cleared for game action less than a week into the Double-A season.

Cubs' Brett Bateman: Slated for hamate surgery
Manager Craig Counsell said Thursday that Bateman will undergo hamate bone surgery on his right hand, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
It's a surgery that typically sidelines a player for around six weeks, so Bateman will get a late start to the season. Once healthy, he's likely to be assigned to Double-A Tennessee.
