  • Cubs' Riley Martin: Throwing again

The Cubs announced June 10 that Martin (elbow) has resumed playing catch, MLB.com reports. Back on April 27, Martin was diagnosed with a left elbow flexor strain, an injury that was expected to keep him on the shelf for about eight weeks. Though he was recently able to start throwing again, Martin has yet to advance to facing hitters and looks as though he'll wind up missing more time than originally anticipated. Martin had gotten off to a strong start to the season prior to being shelved, posting a 2.16 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 10:2 K:BB in 8.1 innings over eight appearances.

  • Cubs' Riley Martin: Expected to miss eight weeks

Martin has been diagnosed with flexor strain in his left elbow and is expected to miss eight weeks, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. Martin was placed on the 15-day injured list over the weekend due to left elbow inflammation, but it's since been reported that he'll need more than the minimum to return to full strength. The Cubs are weathering quite the injury storm in the bullpen, as Daniel Palencia (lat), Caleb Thielbar (hamstring) and Hunter Harvey (triceps) are also on the shelf.

  • Cubs' Riley Martin: Lands on injured list

The Cubs placed Martin on the 15-day injured list Sunday, retroactive to April 24, due to left elbow inflammation. Martin has been an effective bullpen piece this season with a 2.16 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 10:2 K:BB over 8.1 innings, but he's now the latest in a long line of Cubs relievers to go down with an injury. The left-hander will be eligible to be reinstated May 9, but it's unclear how long he's expected to be sidelined.

  • Cubs' Riley Martin: Serving as opener Tuesday

Martin will serve as the Cubs' opening pitcher for Tuesday's game against Atlanta, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. Martin will presumably work the first inning or two before handing the ball over to Colin Rea, who was previously listed as the Cubs' starter for Tuesday but will instead operate as a bulk reliever. The start will be the first of Martin's career after he made his previous three appearances with the Cubs out of the bullpen.

  • Cubs' Riley Martin: Joins big club

The Cubs recalled Martin from Triple-A Iowa on Sunday, Jared Wyllys of AllCHGO.com reports. The left-hander is taking the roster spot of Cade Horton (forearm), who was placed on the 15-day injured list. Martin has yet to make his MLB debut but pitched well at Triple-A Iowa last year with a 2.71 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 80:35 K:BB across 63 innings (46 appearances).
