Cubs' Riley Martin: Ruled out for rest of season
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Wednesday that Martin (elbow) has been ruled out for the remainder of the season, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Martin has been shelved since late April with a left flexor strain. He's had difficulty recovering from his throwing sessions, and if that continues, surgery will become an option. Even if Martin doesn't go under the knife, he won't be a candidate to pitch again in 2026.

Cubs' Riley Martin: Throwing in Arizona
Manager Craig Counsell announced July 8 that Martin (elbow) has resumed a throwing program at the Cubs' facility in Arizona, MLB.com reports.
The Cubs haven't provided another update on Martin's status in nearly a month, making it unclear whether the left-hander suffered a setback in his recovery from a left flexor strain or is simply being ramped up slowly. Martin turned in a 2.16 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 10:2 K:BB in 8.1 innings over his eight appearances prior to hitting the injured list April 26.

Cubs' Riley Martin: Throwing again
The Cubs announced June 10 that Martin (elbow) has resumed playing catch, MLB.com reports.
Back on April 27, Martin was diagnosed with a left elbow flexor strain, an injury that was expected to keep him on the shelf for about eight weeks. Though he was recently able to start throwing again, Martin has yet to advance to facing hitters and looks as though he'll wind up missing more time than originally anticipated. Martin had gotten off to a strong start to the season prior to being shelved, posting a 2.16 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 10:2 K:BB in 8.1 innings over eight appearances.

Cubs' Riley Martin: Expected to miss eight weeks
Martin has been diagnosed with flexor strain in his left elbow and is expected to miss eight weeks, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.
Martin was placed on the 15-day injured list over the weekend due to left elbow inflammation, but it's since been reported that he'll need more than the minimum to return to full strength. The Cubs are weathering quite the injury storm in the bullpen, as Daniel Palencia (lat), Caleb Thielbar (hamstring) and Hunter Harvey (triceps) are also on the shelf.

Cubs' Riley Martin: Lands on injured list
The Cubs placed Martin on the 15-day injured list Sunday, retroactive to April 24, due to left elbow inflammation.
Martin has been an effective bullpen piece this season with a 2.16 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 10:2 K:BB over 8.1 innings, but he's now the latest in a long line of Cubs relievers to go down with an injury. The left-hander will be eligible to be reinstated May 9, but it's unclear how long he's expected to be sidelined.

Cubs' Riley Martin: Serving as opener Tuesday
Martin will serve as the Cubs' opening pitcher for Tuesday's game against Atlanta, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.
Martin will presumably work the first inning or two before handing the ball over to Colin Rea, who was previously listed as the Cubs' starter for Tuesday but will instead operate as a bulk reliever. The start will be the first of Martin's career after he made his previous three appearances with the Cubs out of the bullpen.

Cubs' Riley Martin: Expected to be called up
Martin is expected to be called up from Triple-A Iowa to take the roster spot of Cade Horton (forearm), who is set to land on the injured list, Jordan Bastian and Jason Foster of MLB.com report.
After Horton departed Friday's contest with right forearm discomfort, Martin joined the Cubs at Progressive Field in Cleveland on Saturday, but the game was rained out and Chicago didn't have to make any roster moves. The Cubs get a 27th man for Sunday's doubleheader, but Martin may stick around into next week. The lefty reliever has been in the organization since 2021 but has yet to make his MLB debut. He would likely fill a middle relief role, with one of Ben Brown or Colin Rea expected to move from the bullpen into the rotation with Horton out.

Cubs' Riley Martin: Joins big club
The Cubs recalled Martin from Triple-A Iowa on Sunday, Jared Wyllys of AllCHGO.com reports.
The left-hander is taking the roster spot of Cade Horton (forearm), who was placed on the 15-day injured list. Martin has yet to make his MLB debut but pitched well at Triple-A Iowa last year with a 2.71 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 80:35 K:BB across 63 innings (46 appearances).

Cubs' Riley Martin: Optioned to minors
The Cubs optioned Martin to Triple-A Iowa on Sunday.
The left-hander was added to Chicago's 40-man roster in November in order to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft, and he gave up two earned runs with two strikeouts across 3.1 innings during spring training. Martin had a 2.71 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 80:35 K:BB over 63 innings at the Triple-A level last season, and he could make his MLB debut at some point this year if he performs similarly.
