  Evans underwent UCL reconstruction surgery with an internal brace Jan. 23 on his right elbow. Evans missed several weeks during the second half of last season with right elbow inflammation, so it's possible he had UCL damage for a while that was only recently discovered. He will miss the entire 2026 season, and given the timing of the procedure, could get a late start to the 2027 campaign, as well. Evans had been likely to open the upcoming season at Triple-A Tacoma, but his absence is a blow to the Mariners' pitching depth. The 24-year-old posted a 4.32 ERA and 59:31 K:BB over 81.1 innings covering 15 starts and one relief outing last season.

Evans landed on the 15-day injured list on Aug. 15 due to right elbow inflammation and will likely need just one or two rehab starts in the minors to get stretched back out. Prior to being deactivated, Evans went 6-5 with a 4.37 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 58:30 K:BB across 78.1 innings over 15 starts with Seattle. With the Seattle rotation currently at full strength, Evans could be relegated to a bullpen role once he's reinstated.

Evans made the trip with the Mariners to Arizona due to what Wilson initially termed as a precautionary reason, but the rookie right-hander will end up being needed in the rotation as a replacement for Bryce Miller, who will go back on the injured list due to elbow inflammation, which previously shelved him in May. Though Miller could be in line for a lengthier stay on the IL this time around, Evans could be headed back to Tacoma after his start Tuesday. The Mariners are expected to get Logan Gilbert (elbow) back from the IL early next week, and Evans might find himself as the odd man out of the rotation if Seattle elects to keep Emerson Hancock in place as its fifth starter. Over his six starts with the Mariners earlier this season, Evans went 3-1 with a 2.83 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 25:10 K:BB in 35 innings.

For those who are avid dynasty-league managers, Evans became the talk of spring training in late March, as reports started emerging of him adding four miles per hour to his low-90s fastball. The Mariners selected Evans in the 12th round of last year's draft, but since then his stuff has ticked up significantly -- he also added a sweeper -- and this assignment to Double-A is as aggressive as Atlanta's assignment for Hurston Waldrep and more aggressive than Cincinnati's assignment for Rhett Lowder, so it's fair to view Evans as a first-round talent.
