• Mets' Jonah Tong: Fails to crack Opening Day roster

  The Mets optioned Tong to Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday. Tong struggled in his lone start this spring -- yielding three runs over 2.2 innings -- but this is more about the Mets having other rotation options, allowing them to give Tong more seasoning at Syracuse. The 22-year-old fanned 22 over 18.2 innings during his time with the Mets last season but also walked nine and posted a 7.71 ERA and 1.77 WHIP. It's likely Tong will wind up making lots of starts for the Mets this season, but for now he'll bide his time in the minors.

• Mets' Jonah Tong: Bounces back vs. Padres

  Tong (2-2) earned the win Thursday over San Diego, allowing one unearned run on four hits over five innings. He struck out eight. After allowing six runs in just two-thirds of an inning during his previous start, Tong rebounded with an excellent effort against the Padres, logging a season high in strikeouts without issuing a walk. Through his first four MLB starts (16.2 innings), Tong has posted a 5.94 ERA with a 1.44 WHIP and 21:7 K:BB. He'll look to build on Thursday's performance his next time out, tentatively slated for next week on the road against the Cubs in what should be his final start of the regular season.

• Mets' Jonah Tong: Chased early in Friday's loss

  Tong (1-2) took the loss Friday, surrendering six runs on four hits and three walks over two-thirds of an inning as the Mets fell 8-3 to the Rangers. He struck out one. The 22-year-old rookie couldn't escape the first inning, walking two of the first three batters he faced, and Tong may have been feeling jitters in a high-profile matchup against former Mets ace Jacob deGrom. Tong was the victim of bad luck as much as his control problems, however, as he gave up three opposite-field singles on bloops and flares -- none hit harder than 89.1 mph -- before a well-placed double by Michael Helman into the left-field corner with an exit velocity of just 81.5 mph chased the right-hander from the game. Tong sports an unsightly 8.49 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 13:7 K:BB through his first three starts and 11.2 big-league innings, and with Kodai Senga looking sharp in his first Triple-A start Friday, the Mets may make a change in their rotation as they try to desperately cling to a wild-card spot. If he gets another turn, Tong is currently set to make his next start at home next weekend against the Nationals.

  Tong appears in line to make his next start Saturday against the Reds in Cincinnati, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. The Mets had initially confirmed that Tong would take the hill for the series opener Friday, but David Peterson will instead start that contest while the rookie right-hander gets pushed back a day. Tong will be starting on seven days' rest coming off a promising MLB debut versus the Marlins this past Friday, when he struck out six and allowed four runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks over five innings en route to picking up a win.

  Tong, who will be called up from Triple-A Syracuse to start Friday's game against the Marlins, won't be guaranteed any additional turns through the big-league rotation, Will Sammon and Tim Britton of the Athletic report. "We're going turn by turn at this point," president of baseball operations David Stearns said Tuesday. "We try not to plan too far ahead." The minor-league strikeout leader will make his MLB debut Friday as the Mets build in an extra day of rest for other members of the rotation amid a busy portion of the schedule. Whether Tong forces New York to stick with a six-man rotation moving forward or bumps one of the veterans starters to the bullpen will likely depend on how he fares Friday, and whether he gives the club the best chance to win games in a tight playoff race.

• Mets' Jonah Tong: Coming up Friday for MLB debut

  The Mets will call up Tong from Triple-A Syracuse to make his MLB debut with a start Friday against the Marlins at Citi Field, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed that the Mets will move to a six-man rotation to accommodate the arrival of Tong, who was established himself as one of the top pitching prospects in baseball this season. The 22-year-old righty has followed up his breakout 2024 season with an even better showing in 2025, accruing a 1.43 ERA and 0.92 WHIP to go with a minor-league-best 179 strikeouts in 113.2 innings covering 22 starts between Double-A Binghamton and Syracuse. Tong isn't necessarily guaranteed any starts beyond his debut, but he will get the chance to state his case to remain in the Mets rotation moving forward.

  Tong gave up three hits and two walks over 5.2 scoreless innings for Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday. He struck out nine. The MiLB strikeout leader kept on racking up whiffs in his Triple-A debut. Tong has a stunning 1.59 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 171:46 K:BB through 107.2 innings on the season between Double-A and Triple-A, and while the fact that the 2022 seventh-round pick isn't on the 40-man roster might delay his big-league debut until 2026, he appears to have little left to prove in the minors.

Tong will make the leap to Triple-A after posting a 1.59 ERA with an eye-popping 162 strikeouts over 102 innings in 20 starts with Binghamton this season. The right-hander will be the headliner of a prominent trio of starting pitching prospects at Syracuse that also includes Brandon Sproat and Nolan McLean.

  Tong struck out eight while allowing three hits and two walks over five scoreless innings for Double-A Binghamton on Tuesday. The 22-year-old right-hander has absolutely nothing left to prove in the Eastern League. Tong hasn't served up a home run since late May, and over 53 innings since the beginning of June he sports a 1.02 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 82:20 K:BB. The minor-league strikeout leader with 154 punchouts in 97 innings on the season, Tong should be getting a promotion to Triple-A any day now, especially with the trade of Blade Tidwell to the Giants having opened up a spot in the Syracuse rotation.

The 21-year-old righty is racking up Ks in the Eastern League, and his control might be taking a step forward as well. After issuing five passes in his first start of the season, Tong has posted a 25:6 K:BB over his last three starts (13.1 innings). He could rise up prospect lists quickly if he continues to dominate and develops a little more efficiency.
