Report: Alex Bregman to Opt Out of Contract with Red Sox

Player Outlook
Anthony Seigler spent the majority of the 2025 season with Triple-A Nashville but made his major-league debut with the Brewers in July. He mostly saw work at the hot corner but showed off his versatility by playing first base and even catcher, and he looked to be carving a consistent role for himself at third base before losing playing time to Caleb Durbin. Seigler wrapped up the 2025 season in Triple-A, where he posted an .892 OPS with 23 steals (on 27 attempts), 51 runs, 16 doubles, eight home runs and 39 RBI in 307 minor-league plate appearances. Seigler profiles as a utility player, and his trade to Boston in February doesn't change that. However, he'll likely have a tougher time seeing the majors for the Red Sox, especially with Caleb Durbin and Andruw Monasterio also coming over in the trade and likely being ahead of him on the depth chart.

  • Red Sox's Anthony Seigler: Traded to Boston

The Red Sox acquired Seigler in a trade with the Brewers on Monday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Seigler hit .194/.292/.210 in 34 games with the Brewers in 2025 but posted a .414 on-base percentage during his time at Triple-A Nashville. The 26-year-old offers unique positional versatility with an ability to play third base, second base, both corner outfield spots and catcher. Seigler has minor-league options remaining and seems likely to begin the 2026 campaign at Triple-A Worcester.

  • Brewers' Anthony Seigler: Dispatched back to Triple-A

The Brewers optioned Seigler to Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday. Seigler has batted only .194/.292/.210 with zero home runs over 34 games and had made just one start in September. He's being sent out in order to clear space on the active roster for the return of Rhys Hoskins (thumb).

  • Brewers' Anthony Seigler: Losing out on starts to Durbin

Seigler remains out of the lineup for the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Cubs. Seigler had started at third base in five of the Brewers' first eight games of August as manager Pat Murphy more proactively shielded rookie Caleb Durbin from right-handed pitching, but Durbin has since re-established himself as Milwaukee's clear top option at the hot corner. Over the last nine games, Seigler has cracked the lineup just once while Durbin has started in the other eight contests.

  • Brewers' Anthony Seigler: Idle against lefty

Seigler is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets. The switch-hitting Seigler has been seeing more starts against right-handed pitching lately at Caleb Durbin's expense, but Durbin remains the Brewers' clear top option at third base when Milwaukee faces a lefty, such as Mets starter Sean Manaea. Seigler has done little at the plate to earn extra playing time however, batting just .192 (5-for-26) since the All-Star break with zero extra-base hits.

  • Brewers' Anthony Seigler: Officially added to roster

The Brewers selected Seigler's contract from Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday. Seigler is a versatile player capable of handling catcher, second base and third base. He's a switch hitter but is a much better hitter from the left side of the plate, as he posted a .975 OPS against righties as compared to a .445 OPS versus lefties this season at Nashville. The 26-year-old is also a capable baserunner, having gone 20-for-23 on stolen-base attempts over 63 games in 2025. Seigler will be making his major-league debut when/if he gets into a game.

  • Brewers' Anthony Seigler: Call-up pending

The Brewers are expected to call up Seigler from Triple-A Nashville, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reported Sunday. Seigler inked a minor league contract with the Brewers in November after spending seven seasons in the Yankees organization. The 26-year-old has slashed .277/.416/.465 with seven home runs and 20 stolen bases over 267 plate appearances with Nashville this season. He's split time between second base, third base and catcher this season. It'll be his MLB debut if he gets into a game.

  • Brewers' Anthony Seigler: Signs with Milwaukee as NRI

The Brewers signed Seigler to a minor-league contract Nov. 19 that includes an invitation to spring training. Seigler was a first-round pick of the Yankees back in 2018 but has yet to advance past the Double-A level, having slashed .234/.350/.398 with 12 homers and 29 steals at Double-A Somerset during the 2024 minor-league season. He was a full-time second baseman last season after primarily being a catcher previously. Seigler will likely begin the 2025 season at Triple-A Nashville.

  • Yankees' Anthony Seigler: Likely to begin season in Low-A

Seigler (kneecap) is expected to start the 2020 campaign with Low-A Charleston, Dan Kelly of SB Nation reports. The Yankees drafted Seigler 23rd overall in the 2018 draft, and he was initially regarded as one of the team's top prospects. However, the backstop hit only .175 in 120 plate appearances in Low-A ball last season before a patella fracture ended his campaign after 30 games. Seigler's defensive tools make him an intriguing player to keep an eye on, and the coming season figures to be crucial in assessing his offensive potential.

  • Yankees' Anthony Seigler: Reporting to Low-A

The Yankees will assign Seigler (quadriceps) to Low-A Charleston on Monday to make his season debut, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. After straining his quadriceps in March, Seigler was held back at extended spring training as the Yankees took a cautious approach with returning him to game action. With the organization now apparently satisfied with how Seigler's quad has responded in a simulated games, the 2018 first-round pick will now make his debut in full-season ball. The 19-year-old will get a tough test right off the bat with Charleston set to oppose Dallas Keuchel, who will be making his first rehab start for the Braves' affiliate in Rome.
