  • Athletics' J.T. Ginn: Closes Coliseum with win

Ginn (1-1) picked up the win Thursday against Texas, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks across 5.1 innings. He struck out two. The 25-year-old rookie logged his first MLB victory Thursday in front of a sold-out crowd for the Athletics' final game at the Oakland Coliseum. • Athletics' J.T. Ginn: Roughed up in no-decision

Ginn did not factor into the decision Saturday against the White Sox, allowing three runs on 10 hits over four innings. He struck out three without issuing a walk. Ginn was knocked around by the White Sox, giving up three or more hits in each of the first three innings. The rookie right-hander was making his fourth consecutive start after pitching in relief in his first two big-league appearances. This was Ginn's first start in which he doesn't complete five innings, but he's allowed multiple runs in each of those four starts. The 25-year-old will carry a 4.94 ERA into his next start, currently scheduled against the Yankees.

  • Athletics' J.T. Ginn: Gives up three runs in first loss

Ginn (0-1) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out five over five innings to take the loss Sunday versus the Tigers. Ginn gave up two runs in the third inning and another in the fourth, leaving the game with the Athletics trailing 3-0. A comeback wasn't in the cards after Ross Stripling surrendered six runs in the eighth inning, leaving Ginn with his first loss in five major-league appearances (three starts). He's pitched to a 4.58 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 20:6 K:BB over 19.2 innings. Ginn's next outing is projected to be a favorable road matchup versus the White Sox.

  • Athletics' J.T. Ginn: Drawing another start

Ginn is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Mariners in Oakland. Ginn will receive a second turn through the rotation after he surrendered four runs on four hits and one walk while striking out four across five innings in his first MLB start this past Thursday in Cincinnati. The Athletics will likely give the 25-year-old right-hander some runway in a starting role during September as he looks to make a case for a permanent spot in the big-league rotation in 2025.

  • Athletics' J.T. Ginn: Making first MLB start Thursday

Ginn is scheduled to start Thursday's game against the Reds in Cincinnati, Jessica Kleinschmidt of the Oakland Athletics Radio Network reports. After being called up from Triple-A Las Vegas on Aug. 20, Ginn made his first two appearances for Oakland out of the bullpen, striking out four batters over 3.2 innings while giving up one run on one hit and three walks. With the Athletics well out of the mix for playoff contention heading into the final month of the season, Ginn could end up being part of a six-man rotation, though the club will likely wait and see how he fares in his first MLB start Thursday before determining how he'll be used moving forward. Prior to his call-up last week, Ginn turned in a 5.72 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 69:30 K:BB over 72.1 innings across 15 outings (14 starts) with Las Vegas in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.

  • Athletics' J.T. Ginn: Returns to action for Midland

Ginn (forearm) was reinstated from Double-A Midland's 7-day injured list Aug. 1 and made his return to action Friday, tossing four innings against Arkansas. He struck out four and allowed two earned runs on four hits and no walks. Ginn was back with Midland for the first time in nearly three months after an extended absence due to right forearm tightness. Before being activated, Ginn built up his arm with two rehab starts in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League.

  • Athletics' J.T. Ginn: Rehabbing in Arizona

Ginn (forearm) began a rehab assignment July 22 with the Athletics' rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate and has struck out five over seven innings between his first two starts. He's allowed one unearned run on four hits and no walks. Ginn has been on Double-A Midland's 7-day injured list since May 16 with a right forearm injury but looks like he could soon be ready to rejoin the Athletics' Texas League affiliate. Before landing on the shelf, Ginn submitted a 6.48 ERA and 1.42 WHIP while striking out 23 over 16.2 innings for Midland.

  • Mets' J.T. Ginn: Advances to High-A

Ginn was promoted to High-A Brooklyn on Tuesday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Ginn was selected by the Mets in the second round of the 2020 draft while still working his way back from Tommy John surgery. He showed no ill effects from the procedure in eight starts for Low-A St. Lucie to begin this season, cruising to a 2.56 ERA and 0.93 WHIP. His 23.6 percent strikeout rate doesn't stand out, but both his 6.8 percent walk rate and 57.7 percent groundball rate are strong marks.

  • Mets' J.T. Ginn: Assigned to Low-A

Ginn (elbow) was assigned to Low-A St. Lucie Tuesday and is expected to make his professional debut in the coming days, Jacob Resnick of SNYtv reports. The Mets selected Ginn out of Mississippi State with the 52nd overall pick in the 2020 draft despite the right-hander undergoing Tommy John surgery just a few months prior. The 22-year-old's rehab is now coming to a close as he gets set to make his first appearance for St. Lucie in the very near future.

  • Mets' J.T. Ginn: On track in Tommy John rehab

Mets director of player development Kevin Howard said that Ginn (elbow) completed a bullpen session Tuesday and remains "on schedule or ahead of schedule" in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Now one year removed from undergoing the procedure while he was still competing at Mississippi State, Ginn -- the 52nd overall pick in the 2020 first-year player draft -- looks to be nearing the finish line of his arduous rehab process. Howard noted that Ginn was touching 90 miles per hour during Tuesday's bullpen session despite only throwing at about 70 percent effort. The Mets are still likely to proceed slowly with the 21-year-old, but he should be ready to make his professional debut in the lower levels of the minors at some point in the late spring or early summer.

  • Mets' J.T. Ginn: Joins big club for spring training

The Mets invited Ginn (elbow) to big-league spring training Sunday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Ginn will be a part of the Mets' Grapefruit League roster despite having not yet made his professional debut, as the 2020 minor-league season was cancelled following New York's selection of him with the 52nd overall pick in last year's draft. The right-hander was already scheduled to miss the 2020 campaign anyway after undergoing Tommy John surgery last spring, but his inclusion on the big-league spring training roster implies that he's back to full health entering 2021. Ginn likely won't make more than a handful of appearances during the Mets' exhibition schedule before moving to minor-league camp.

  • Mets' J.T. Ginn: Headed to Big Apple

The Mets have selected Ginn (elbow) with the 52nd overall pick in the 2020 first-year player draft. The Dodgers were unable to meet Ginn's asking price when they selected him out of high school with the 30th overall pick in 2018, so he enrolled at Mississippi State. He logged a 3.13 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 105:19 K:BB in 86.1 innings as a freshman and was on track to go in the middle of the first round this year as a draft-eligible sophomore before needing Tommy John surgery in March. When healthy, the 6-foot-2, 192-pound righty works with a mid-90s sinking fastball and a wipeout slider, which is his best pitch. The biggest change for Ginn since his prep days is that his changeup is now a legitimate third pitch, projecting as at least an average offering with a chance to get to plus. He is athletic and projects for at least average command. While he has plus velocity, his fastball is geared more toward inducing weak contact than whiffs in the zone. However, he should still be able to hover around a strikeout per inning via his slider and improving changeup. Ginn should be ready to return to game action in the first half of the 2021 season.
