Diamondbacks' Kohl Drake: Option to start Wednesday
Rotowire
Drake is an option to start Wednesday against the Cardinals, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
The Diamondbacks received a boost Sunday when Jose Cabrera filled in for the injured Ryne Nelson (elbow), but the club also needs to deal with another rotation hole created by an injury to Michael Soroka (lower body), whose turn is due Wednesday. Arizona called up Drake, a starter in the minors, on Sunday for potential length out of the bullpen, which was not needed thanks to Cabrera's five-inning effort.

Diamondbacks' Kohl Drake: Makes spring debut
Rotowire
Drake (shoulder) struck out two and allowed an earned run on no hits and two walks over two innings in Sunday's 10-9 loss to the Angels in Cactus League play.
Drake missed the final month of the 2025 campaign due to a left shoulder strain, but he appears to have had a normal offseason and was cleared to start the Diamondbacks' third game of the Cactus League slate. Arizona protected Drake from the Rule 5 Draft over the winter and added him to the 40-man roster, potentially setting the stage for him to make his MLB debut at some point later this season. He's expected to open the season in the rotation at Triple-A Reno.

Diamondbacks' Kohl Drake: Selected to 40-man
Rotowire
The Diamondbacks selected Drake's (shoulder) contract from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old southpaw was part of the return Arizona received from the Rangers for Merrill Kelly. Drake wasn't quite able to get comfortable with his new organization, however, allowing 17 earned runs over 16.2 innings across four starts before suffering a season-ending shoulder strain in late August. His addition to the 40-man roster will prevent another team from picking him up during the Rule 5 Draft in December, but the D-backs will likely need to see more from Drake before allowing him to make his big-league debut.
