Player Outlook
Tyson Lewis might swing a little too hard, as he has logged some elite exit velocities and some very concerning contact metrics. The 2024 second-round pick spent a significant amount of time in the Arizona Complex League as a 19-year-old, while most of his peers from the 2024 draft class had spent most, or all of the year in full-season ball. Lewis predictably raked against younger, less talented ACL pitchers (130 wRC+, .928 OPS), and while his slash line at Single-A was fine (.268/.347/.417), he struck out over a third of the time (35.4 K%). Lewis logged a 61 percent contact rate and a 22.9 percent swinging-strike rate as an age-appropriate hitter at Single-A. He offset the swing and miss with impact in the lower levels, leading all teenagers with 100-plus plate appearances in 90th percentile exit velocity, per Baseball America. Even so, it's pretty rare for a player with Lewis' contact woes against lower-level pitching to develop even a fringe-average hit tool. If he were a no-doubt shortstop like Carson Williams of the Rays, Lewis would get endless opportunities to succeed at the dish, but he'll probably move to third base.

  • Reds' Tyson Lewis: Impressing in ACL

Lewis is batting .348/.392/.461 with five extra-base hits, 11 steals, 11 RBI and 19 runs scored over 21 games in the Arizona Complex League. The Reds selected Lewis with the 51st overall pick in 2024 and are giving him a taste of the ACL before exposing him to full-season ball. That appears to be a good thing for the 19-year-old Lewis, as noted by Keith Law of The Athletic, who feels he could be a top-75 prospect now and in the top 30 by next winter. The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder has played exclusively at shortstop for the ACL Reds, but he could profile at another infield position if short doesn't work out.
