Cabrera was called up from Triple-A Reno earlier in the day and was handed the ball for his fifth big-league start of the season. The right-hander served up a solo homer to the first batter he faced in the game, but he showed poised in settling down thereafter, leaving the contest with one out in the fifth inning of a 1-1 tie. A run was charged to Cabrera's ledger after he departed, and that was enough to send him to the loss. Despite the defeat, Cabrera made a generally good impression, though he was given a relatively quick hook after just 70 pitches. With Michael Soroka (shoulder) on the IL, Cabrera may have pitched well enough to earn another turn in the rotation, and that would line up to come at home against Philadelphia next week.

Cabrera is starting on the mound Thursday in San Francisco to fill in for Michael Soroka, who's on the injured list due to right shoulder inflammation. In a corresponding move, Arizona optioned Drey Jameson following Wednesday's 2-0 win over the Cubs. Cabrera has made four MLB appearances this year and has a 5.60 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 12:7 K:BB over 17.2 innings.

The 24-year-old will fill the opening in the rotation that was created by Michael Soroka's (shoulder) recent move to the injured list. Cabrera has made four starts for Arizona this season, giving up 11 earned runs across 17.2 innings. Since making his last appearance in the majors July 8, Cabrera has posted a 6.83 ERA and 1.66 WHIP across 29 frames at Triple-A.

Cabrera landed just 33 of 63 pitches for strikes in his shortest start yet. Through 13.1 innings over three starts, he has a 4.73 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 10:5 K:BB. The 24-year-old continues to fill in for a depleted rotation, and he'll likely get one more start before the All-Star break. That's expected to be on the road versus the Padres, but Cabrera will likely need a good performance to make a case to stay in the rotation once Michael Soroka (glute) is ready to return.

Cabrera seemed to have settled in after giving up a run in the first inning, tossing three scoreless innings to follow, but Tampa Bay got to him for three more runs across the fifth and sixth frames. This news confirms what was speculated Saturday, when Arizona added Cabrera to its taxi squad. The Diamondbacks are in need of starters after placing Ryne Nelson (elbow) and Michael Soroka (glute) on the injured list. Cabrera features a six-pitch mix, per Diamondbacks farm director Chris Slivka, and the 6-foot-3 right-hander has improved his command and control while upping his strikeout rate from 19.8 percent in 2025 to 28.7 percent this year in 12 starts (nine at Double-A Amarillo and three for Reno).
