  Carroll was back at camp Thursday one day after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured hamate bone in his right hand, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Carroll's return to camp wasn't just for show. He sported a cast over his right hand, but the left-handed outfielder was seen doing plyometric throwing drills. He can also run and execute leg work in the weight room. Carroll and the Diamondbacks are hoping he can return around Opening Day.

• Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Undergoes surgery

  Carroll underwent surgery on his right hand Wednesday after breaking the hamate bone a day earlier while taking a swing during live batting practice, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. It's uncertain how long Carroll will be sidelined, but the Diamondbacks are holding out hope for a best-case scenario, which would have the outfielder return to action around Opening Day. Arizona's outfield was already short-staffed, as left-fielder Lourdes Gurriel (knee) could be out until June. As for Carroll's replacement, manager Torey Lovullo floated the idea of Alek Thomas moving from center to right field. The club has wanted to give prospect Jordan Lawlar -- an infielder for much of his career -- a look in center field. That would leave Tim Tawa and Jorge Barrosa to compete in left field.

Carroll blasted a 428-foot shot off Ranger Suarez in the second inning, marking his 31st homer of the year, while stealing second in the sixth to reach his 30th stolen base, making him the first player in Diamondbacks history to record a 30-30 season. Carroll has been scorching at the plate of late, logging at least one hit in eight of his last nine games while producing a .985 OPS during that stretch.   Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Monday that the level of concern regarding Carroll's left hand injury is "probably a little higher than it has been over the past couple of days," Casey Drottar of MLB.com reports. Lovullo and the Diamondbacks are still awaiting results of the MRI on Carroll's bruised left hand, but optimism that the outfielder can avoid the 10-day injured list seems to be waning. The club could have more on Carroll's status after Monday's game against the White Sox. Carroll is out of the lineup for a fifth straight game and hasn't been used off the bench since being hit on the hand by a pitch last Wednesday. However, Lovullo noted before Monday's game that Carroll could be available in "small spurts and small segments," indicating that he may be available to pinch run, per Drottar.
