Player Outlook
Gunnar Henderson, through his age-23 season, already has more homers than Freddie Freeman, David Wright and Francisco Lindor had through their age-23 seasons. He has more runs scored at this age than Derek Jeter and Fernando Tatis Jr. Simply put, he has been everything that was expected of him and then some through two-plus seasons in Baltimore. Nearly every measure across the board has improved year over year with nary a hiccup to be found. Despite the unfriendly confines to the opposite field, Henderson had 23 of his 37 homers at home. The power waned in the second half of the season, as his slugging percentage dropped from .584 to .447. His struggles, along with Adley Rutschman's, were a big reason why Baltimore ended up in the wild-card spot and bounced in two games without a whimper. The second-half slump will likely be motivation for him as he works out all winter and prepares for another full season of play a taxing position. He is a first-round talent and will be one for the foreseeable future barring injury.

  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Bound for injured list

GM Mike Elias announced Sunday that Henderson (side) will start the regular season on the injured list but hopes the absence will be measured in "days, not weeks," Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports. The news isn't exactly a surprise since Henderson hasn't seen game action since suffering the intercostal strain in late February, but his recent rehab progression gave him an outside chance of being ready for Opening Day. The 24-year-old took live batting practice Saturday and could be cleared to play in exhibition games in the near future, so there's optimism his absence to begin the season will be brief.

  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Progressing to live BP

Manager Brandon Hyde said Henderson (side) will take live batting practice Saturday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. Hyde admitted Thursday that Henderson is "running out of time" to be ready for Opening Day, but he doesn't appear far off from being cleared for game action. Even if the 23-year-old begins the season on the injured list, he doesn't seem likely to miss much time given where he's at in his rehab program.

  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Takes batting practice

Henderson (intercostal) took batting practice Tuesday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. Recovering from a mild right intercostal muscle strain, Henderson continues to ramp up his baseball activities as he attempts to get ready in time for Opening Day. He will surely need to get some at-bats in a game setting soon in order to have a shot to be active for the opener, and it's not clear when that might happen. If Henderson has to miss some time, the Orioles would slide Jackson Holliday over to shortstop and likely use Ramon Urias at second base.

The expectation is that Henderson should be able to resume baseball activities soon, with a return to game action coming shortly after that.

  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Should resume activities soon

Manager Brandon Hyde said Sunday that Henderson (side) is improving but is still a few days away from resuming baseball activities, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. Henderson is still tending to a sore lower right side, which he tweaked in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against Toronto.
