Player Outlook
An intercostal strain, suffered during the Orioles' Feb. 27 Grapefruit League game, put Gunnar Henderson on the injured list to begin the 2025 season. He returned in the first week of April, but it took a while before Henderson began to look like himself again, as he limped out of the gates with a .228/.268/.413 line through the end of April. The 24-year-old was more comfortable by the summer months, batting well over .300 in June and July. His performance dipped again down the stretch, and in the end, Henderson's .787 OPS was down more than 100 points from the year prior (.893). This may present a buy-low opportunity in fantasy drafts, although early ADP suggests there will not be much of a discount. Henderson reached a career-high 30 steals in 35 attempts last season, continuing his run of good efficiency on the basepaths and presumably keeping the light green under new manager Craig Albernaz.

  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Back at camp Sunday

Henderson (personal) rejoined the Orioles at camp Sunday and was spotted participating in infield work, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports. Henderson missed three days of workouts while attending to a personal matter, but the brief absence shouldn't affect his readiness for the start of the season. The 24-year-old shortstop is scheduled to leave camp again later this month to join Team USA for the World Baseball Classic.

  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Away due to personal matter

Henderson has left Orioles camp Thursday due to a personal matter, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. Henderson is expected back Sunday, so the brief absence shouldn't greatly affect his preparation for the season. The young shortstop is looking to bounce back at the plate in 2026 after a nagging shoulder issue contributed to his home-run total dropping from 37 to 17 season over season.

  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Working on speed over winter

Henderson worked out at Tinsley Performance this offseason with the goal of increasing his speed, Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner reports. Henderson stole 30 bases in 2025 and ranked in the 79th percentile in sprint speed, but he believes he had room for improvement. Specifically, the 24-year-old has been working on his first few steps, staying more horizontal rather than getting too vertical too soon. Henderson had a disappointing 2025 season at the plate while playing through a shoulder impingement for much of the year, but he's fully healthy now and is a good bet to have a bounce-back showing in 2026.

  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Played through shoulder injury

Henderson revealed Thursday on WBAL Radio that he played through a shoulder impingement "pretty much for three-quarters of the year" in 2025, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. The shoulder injury had not been previously reported. Henderson admitted that it was probably a factor in his downturn offensively, saying he "wasn't able to hold the plane and my body was adjusting to it, not feeling great, so that didn't really set up me in the right spot to leverage the ball like I normally do." The 24-year-old shortstop saw his wRC+ go from 154 to 120 and home run total from 37 to 17 year-over-year. Henderson contends that he's healthy now, and a big bounce-back season offensively could be on the way.

  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Avoids arbitration at $8.5 million

Henderson agreed to a one-year, $8.5 million contract with the Orioles on Thursday, avoiding arbitration, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. It's a massive raise for Henderson in his first year of arbitration eligibility, which is hardly a surprise given that he's been one of the most productive shortstops in baseball since debuting in 2022. The 24-year-old's production dropped a bit in 2025, however, but he still finished with 17 homers, 30 steals, 68 RBI, 85 runs and a .787 OPS in 154 contests.

Henderson went 4-for-6 with a two-run homer, a double and an additional run scored in Thursday's doubleheader sweep of the Mets. The 24-year-old Henderson would then add three more hits in the nightcap. It was an encouraging day for the shortstop, who'd gone just 8-for-39 (.205) in his previous nine games. He's at a .277/.350/.449 slash line with 10 homers, 29 RBI, 44 runs scored, 15 doubles, three triples and nine stolen bases through 77 contests this season.

The star shortstop got off to a rough start at the plate following a delayed beginning to the year due to an intercostal injury, as he was batting .220 and slugging .380 through April 18, but he's rounded into form since. Over his last 264 plate appearances, Henderson is slashing .292/.375/.459 with 21 extra-base hits, 24 RBI, 35 runs scored and seven stolen bases.

  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Belts solo shot in Tuesday's loss

Henderson went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 15-3 loss to the Orioles. • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Homers in win

Henderson went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, two walks, two RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's 9-5 win over the Reds. • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Swipes two bags in victory

Henderson went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, two runs and two stolen bases in Monday's 5-1 win against the Diamondbacks. Henderson had gone just 1-for-13 with seven strikeouts over three games after being activated off the injured list April 4, but he broke out of that slump with his two-hit performance Monday. The talented young shortstop padded his stat line with a pair of thefts, while the double was his first extra-base hit of the campaign. Henderson belted 37 homers and stole 21 bases during the regular season last year, so it's reasonable to expect his initial struggles to be temporary.

  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Progressing to live BP

Manager Brandon Hyde said Henderson (side) will take live batting practice Saturday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. Hyde admitted Thursday that Henderson is "running out of time" to be ready for Opening Day, but he doesn't appear far off from being cleared for game action. Even if the 23-year-old begins the season on the injured list, he doesn't seem likely to miss much time given where he's at in his rehab program.
