There were myriad reasons why the Cardinals' offense flopped in 2024, but Jordan Walker taking a giant step back rather than a step forward was chief among them. The former top prospect was optioned to Triple-A Memphis following a slow start for the second year in a row and his first home run of the season at any level didn't come until June. Walker did hit a team-leading five homers and tied for the club lead with 16 RBI in September, although he also had just a 24:3 K:BB that month. The youngster's 43.1 percent hard-hit rate and 9.5 percent barrel rate were improvements upon his rookie season, but Walker regressed substantially with his strikeout rate (28 percent) and walk rate (5.6 percent). The Cardinals have pledged to play their young guys in 2025, which means Walker, who turns just 23 in May, should get plenty of leash. The pedigree says it should click for him eventually, but it's hard to have a ton of confidence that it will happen in 2025.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Back in action Saturday

Walker (knee) will start in right field and bat sixth in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against Toronto. Inflammation in Walker's left knee forced him out of the Cards' exhibition game March 5, and he has been sidelined ever since. After more than a week of rehab, he'll now return to competitive action before the end of the Grapefruit League schedule, keeping his availability for Opening Day intact. Walker has been a non-factor at the plate this spring, however, going just 2-for-14 with two RBI and eight strikeouts over six contests.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Aiming to return to lineup Saturday

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Thursday that Walker (knee) is tracking toward a return to the lineup Saturday against the Blue Jays, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Walker began a running progression earlier this week and has also taken batting practice and tracked flyballs as he works his way back from left knee inflammation. He has missed over a week of action, but as long as he returns Saturday as expected and doesn't have any setbacks, Walker should be fine for Opening Day.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Goes through running progression

Walker (knee) went through a running progression Tuesday, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Walker is expected to progress to lateral movements next as he works his way back from left knee inflammation. A return to Grapefruit League action should come after that. Walker hasn't played since tweaking his knee March 4 but is expected to have enough time to ramp back up for Opening Day.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Will be re-evaluated Monday

Walker (knee) progressed to hitting soft toss Saturday and is set to be re-evaluated Monday, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Nursing some inflammation in his left knee, Walker had taken dry swings Friday and has also played some catch. The young outfielder should be cleared to ramp up his activities if his evaluation Monday goes well. Walker is projected to be the Cardinals' primary right fielder this season.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Progressing well

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said that Walker (knee) was able to take some dry swings and play catch Friday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Marmol described Walker's progress two days after being diagnosed with inflammation in his left knee as "a little ahead of what I expected," adding that he's "super encouraged" with how the outfielder is feeling. Walker will be held out of Grapefruit League action for a few more days but is tracking toward avoiding a stint on the injured list.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Imaging on knee comes back clean

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Wednesday that Walker has been diagnosed with inflammation in his left knee following an MRI, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The news is good, as Walker is not dealing with any structural damage after tweaking the knee when he stepped on a sprinkler head while pursuing a flyball during Grapefruit League play Tuesday. He will miss around a week of games in order to allow the knee to "calm down," per Marmol, but it doesn't sound as though Walker's Opening Day availability is in doubt.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Getting tests on knee

Walker underwent tests on his left knee after he was removed from Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals, and the Cardinals are expected to provide an update on his status later Wednesday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Walker tweaked his knee when he stepped on a sprinkler head while pursuing a flyball in the second inning of Tuesday's contest. The Cardinals classified his injury as left knee discomfort after he exited the game, but a formal diagnosis should be provided once his tests results are in.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Exits with knee discomfort Tuesday

Walker was removed from Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals in the third inning with a pain in his left knee, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. Walker appeared to tweak his knee while chasing down a flyball in the second inning, as he was seen grimacing and grabbing at his leg after the play. He struck out in his lone plate appearance before exiting. Walker will be re-evaluated once the Cardinals return to their spring training complex.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Working on rediscovering swing

Walker has been working with new Cardinals hitting coach Brant Brown this offseason on rediscovering the swing he had prior to the 2024 season, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Upon reviewing video from 2024 and comparing it to 2023, Walker and Brown noticed that the outfielder's hands were separating from his body too soon, while the balance in his lower half was also inconsistent as he gravitated toward a wider stance. The goal, per Walker, is to "hit line drives" and "drive the ball in the gap" instead of putting so much emphasis on lofting the ball in the air. Walker said he's "super-excited" with the early results of his swing changes and can't wait to test it out against live pitching. The Cardinals are committed to youth in 2025, which includes giving Walker a long leash in right field. The 22-year-old Walker slashed only .201/.253/.366 over 52 regular-season games with St. Louis in 2024 while spending a large chunk of the campaign in the minors.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Getting breather Wednesday

Walker isn't in the Cardinals' lineup for Wednesday's game against the Brewers. Walker will get a chance to clear his head Wednesday after going 0-for-8 with four strikeouts over the first two games of the series. His absence will move Alec Burleson into the outfield with Nolan Arenado serving as St. Louis' DH, opening up third base for Jose Fermin.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Career day with five hits, homer

Walker went 5-for-5 with a home run, a stolen base, four runs scored and three RBI in Sunday's 14-7 win over the Yankees. Walker did it all Sunday, turning in a perfect day at the plate and stealing his first base of the season for good measure. He opened the scoring with an RBI single in the second before slugging a two-run home run in the fifth to extend the Cardinals' lead to five. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Friday that Walker will have an everyday spot in the lineup, and that seems justified after Sunday's performance. A former first-round pick, the 22-year-old Walker has undeniable upside but he has struggled overall in his big-league opportunities in 2024, slashing .143/.218/.221 with zero home runs in 87 plate appearances before Sunday's explosion.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Back up with Cards

The Cardinals recalled Walker from Triple-A Memphis on Friday. Walker went 1-for-11 during a six-game span with the Cardinals earlier in August, but 10 days after being optioned to Memphis, he returns to the 26-man roster. The 22-year-old outfielder replaces Tommy Pham, who was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. Walker is 10-for-69 (.145) with a triple, four doubles, four runs and four RBI this season with St. Louis and while he'll like be deployed primarily against left-handed pitching in the short term, he could get a chance to start if St. Louis fades out of the playoff picture.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Optioned back to minors

The Cardinals optioned Walker to Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday. Walker was recalled early last week, but he was given only three starts in six games, with all of those coming against left-handers. He went just 1-for-11 over that stretch and is now headed back to Memphis, where he can receive regular reps again.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Gets start versus lefty

Walker will start in right field and bat seventh in Friday's game versus the Dodgers, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Walker is being used on the short side of a platoon in right field by the Cardinals, starting two games versus lefties and beginning on the bench in two games against right-handers since his return to the majors. Lars Nootbaar and Alec Burleson will take a seat Friday.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Sitting again versus right-hander

Walker is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game in Cincinnati, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Walker started Monday versus a lefty in the Cardinals' first game since he was recalled from Triple-A Memphis. However, he's now been on the bench for two straight contests against right-handers, as the youngster is poised for a short-side platoon role for now. Lars Nootbaar will start in right field Wednesday.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Rejoins major-league club

The Cardinals recalled Walker from Triple-A Memphis on Monday. While Walker posted a pedestrian .747 OPS in 78 games with Memphis since being optioned to the minors April 24, he had finally found his footing lately, slashing .343/.400/.687 with five home runs over his last 75 plate appearances. Per Katie Woo of The Athletic, the Cardinals' initial plan is to use Walker mostly against left-handed pitching, although he could certainly play his way into starts versus righties, too. He will start in right field and bat seventh versus lefty Andrew Abbott and the Reds on Monday.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Sitting out Monday

Walker is out of the lineup for Monday's game versus the Diamondbacks. Walker has now started just four of the Cardinals' last eight contests while he's produced a .164/.238/.273 slash line to begin the season. Lars Nootbaar will slide over to right field Monday while Alec Burleson receives a start in left as Walker retreats to the bench.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Gets Sunday break

Walker is not included in the starting lineup for Sunday's matchup against the Diamondbacks, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Walker has started 13 of the Cardinals 15 games this year but will get a rest day Sunday. The outfielder is sporting a .182 average through 49 plate appearances, which is a lot lower than his .276 mark last season, but he still has plenty of time to get his bat going this year.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Taking seat Tuesday

Walker is absent from the lineup in Tuesday's game against the Phillies. Walker has just a .536 OPS in his first 10 games this season, so it's probably not a bad time to get him a breather with the Phillies sending Zack Wheeler to the hill. Alec Burleson is in right field.

  • Cardinals' Jordan Walker: Showing strikeout trouble

Walker has gone 2-for-13 with seven strikeouts and a walk over his first five Grapefruit League games. Walker's seven strikeouts lead all Cardinals hitters this spring. The 21-year-old didn't have a terrible time with whiffs as a rookie last year, posting a middle-of-the-road 22.4 percent strikeout rate with a decent 8.1 percent walk rate. He hit .276 with a .787 OPS, 16 home runs, 51 RBI, 51 runs scored and seven stolen bases over 117 contests. Walker's still got untapped power potential, though he's likely to begin 2024 batting in the middle of the order as opposed to the top third.
